DAY 20–Secrecy
Then, with the crowds listening, he turned to his disciples and said, “Beware of these teachers of religious law! For they like to parade around in flowing robes and love to receive respectful greetings as they walk in the marketplaces. And how they love the seats of honor in the synagogues and the head table at banquets. Yet they shamelessly cheat widows out of their property and then pretend to be pious by making long prayers in public. Because of this, they will be severely punished.” (Luke 20:45–47 NLT)
There is some aspect to the discipline of secrecy that cannot be practiced on its own. The discipline itself is simply to do good deeds in secret, in fact to actively work against them being known by others. There is no subterfuge to this, no falsehood, but rather a call to live in such a way that we ensure the only person we are attempting to please or receive praise from is God Himself.

Bless someone you know today, and find a way to do it without revealing that you were the source of the blessing. Find joy today in being unknown; it’s much easier to discern God’s joy at our actions when we don’t have the applause of others to distract us.
It is better for you to live privately and take care of yourself than it is to neglect your soul even though you could work wonders in the world.
—Thomas à Kempis
