Planning and Zoning Commission Public Hearing

On March 6, 2017, the Green Valley Council (GVC) Architectural & Planning Committee convened a meeting to consider Green Valley Recreation’s request to re-zone property (old Nursery) at 333 W. Paseo del Prado, Green Valley, AZ from CB-1 to CB-2.

Green Valley Recreation’s Chief Operating Officer, Jim Conroy, provided a presentation on GVR’s plans for this property and noted that at this time there would only be upgrades to the interior of the building on the site for GVR maintenance requirements and an area immediately south of the building for storage of material, such as sand and gravel. There will also be an area just north and west of the building for vehicle parking for GVR maintenance personnel. Maintenance vehicles will be parked on the property when not in use. The remainder of the area, that was recently a Plant Nursery, will be cleaned-up. On the property, there are two (2) gates fronting Paseo del Prado and these will be retained and used for access to the property. When maintenance vehicles exit the property, they will exit via the east gate and turn right onto Paseo del Prado. This will keep them from backing up traffic by turning left and stacking up at La Canada.

Following the presentation, members of the Committee unanimously approved the recommendation and forwarded it to Pima County Development Services for rezoning.

This rezoning project will now move forward to a Public Hearing held by the Pima County Planning and Zoning Commission for review. This public hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, March 29, 2017, at the Pima County Administration Building, Board of Supervisors Hearing Room, 130 W. Congress St., 1st Floor, Tucson, AZ 85701.

  Wayne's Weekly Wellness Tip
Plan Your Mission, Plan to Succeed

You have a greater chance of sustaining an exercise routine or adhering to a specific meal program if you take the time to create a plan.

Before you go to bed each night, take a few minutes to think about what you hope to accomplish the next day. If exercising is a goal, write down what you plan to do, how long you plan to do it, and what you hope to gain. Do the same with your meals. Write down what you plan to eat throughout the day. Be as specific as you can about how much you plan to eat, and at what time you plan to eat. Don’t forget to include snacks and desserts. As you add more detail to your plan, you give yourself a greater chance at success. Writing or typing it will reinforce your intentions, and seeing it may occasionally encourage you to make different choices.

If the idea of taking time each day to plan isn’t appealing, you can take a more long term approach. Try taking time at the beginning of the week to plan your activities and meals for the entire week. You can even take a longer term approach if that works better for you. I use both long term and short term plans. I try to plan my meals one or two days ahead, but I plan my exercise routines in three week blocks. Near the end of the block, I change the routine and create a new three week block. We’ll visit the importance of adding variety to your routine in a future column.

Take control of your time by planning your tomorrow. It will save you time, and it will help you stay on track to meeting your wellness goals. Go to bed with a plan, and wake up on a mission.

In other GVR fitness news, Arizona Health and Fitness, Inc., has agreed to loan two Spin Cycles to GVR to allow members to take a test ride. The bikes were delivered to Desert Hills Center on March 13. The two Airdyne Upright Bicycles that they replaced have been removed because the parts needed to repair their monitors are no longer available.

Recent studies have shown that cycling on stationary bicycles, especially at high levels of speed and intensity, may provide benefits for people with Parkinson’s Disease. The newly installed bikes at Desert Hills can be used by people of all fitness levels, but are also designed to allow users to pedal harder and faster than regular stationary bikes. If you have an opportunity, I encourage you to visit Desert Hills, give the new bikes a spin, and let me know what you think.

Volunteer Advisory Committee
Organizational Meeting Thursday, March 30
GVR volunteers interested in participating on a Volunteer Advisory Committee are invited to attend an organizational meeting on Thursday, March 30, at

This new stakeholder group is being formed to acknowledge and recognize the tremendous contribution volunteers make in the overall operations of Green Valley Recreation.

The committee will consist of GVR volunteers representing different volunteer groups within the organization in support of GVR’s Vision and Mission.  Potential committee members include the following volunteer groups:  pool and fitness center, program and special event, water aerobics instructors, administrative, club officers and monitors, members of the Board of Directors and committees, the GVR Foundation and others.

At the March 30 meeting, volunteers will begin the process of defining the committee’s scope, goals, operational guidelines, job descriptions, term limits, application process and other details.  The “founding members” will meet unofficially and decide for themselves how the committee will be organized and function in the future.  Completion of this process is targeted for July 2017.

The idea is to give GVR volunteers a unified voice and representation when it comes to providing suggestions, recommendations, and feedback on issues affecting the company.  It is not a committee of the Board of Directors and has no governing or policy creating authorization.  It will act only in an advisory capacity.
2pm in the Member Services Center Annex.  Please register in advance by contacting Maureen McCarthy, Senior Recreation Supervisor, at 520-838-0160 or at maureen@gvrec.org .
