Fellowship News

UUFR’s 2017 Generosity Campaign is at the halfway point. With $333,750 pledged we are at 60% of our campaign goal of $552,300. While this is encouraging, we still have a long way to go. We are still behind our goal of increasing our number of pledge units. So far we have received only 121 toward our goal of 300 pledges. Broadening our base of support is crucial for the health of our community.

Let’s keep this momentum going into the stretch!
•  Review the material in the pledge mailing or on the Generosity webpage.
•  As members of the UUFR community we depend on one another to share our resources as we can.
•  To the extent possible consider increasing your pledge.
•  This year’s Generosity Campaign, more than any other in recent memory, will shape the future of our Beloved Community for years to come

Make your pledge now!

What Social Justice Work Calls You?
The UUFR Justice Council will be surveying the congregation this Sunday during the service regarding what types of social justice work members and friends engage with – where do you presently volunteer your time, talent and treasure? We are trying to identify the issues most close to the hearts of our congregation as we build on our justice efforts. Some examples are racism, voting rights, hunger, homelessness/housing, LGBTQ issues, and civil liberties.

If you will not be at the service this Sunday, please send an email to justice@uufr.org and let us know where you presently volunteer and/or support in other ways. Please be sure to sign your name, so we can connect folks with similar interests. Thanks for all you do! Justice Council Members -  Jim Van Kirk, Susan Silverio, Jessica Lin, Michele Hunter, Bob Moxley, Pat Clark and Rev. Sasha.

Do you have a spare laptop or a few hours of spare time?
The Refugee Alliance Network will be offering its first computer class for refugees in Raleigh starting June 2017, and they are seeking donations of used laptop computers (45) and volunteer teachers (3), and have approached UUFR to see if we might be able to help. If you have a working used laptop computer lying around that you wouldn’t mind donating or would like to offer your time to help teach computer skills to refugees, please let Rev. Sasha know at sashao@uufr.org.

Last Year in Baltimore and Las Vegas, 150 refugees from Cuba, Burundi, Bhutan, Darfur, Nepal, and South Sudan participated in this program and learned things ranging from basic computer operation to more advanced web skills such as managing websites and social media. Now, we have an opportunity to help make this program a success in Raleigh as well!

The Refugee Alliance Network (RAN) began in 2009 in Las Vegas, Nevada as a non-profit, tax exempt 501(c)(3) community based organization. Since 2015, they have expanded to the D.C. Metropolitan area, serving the District of Columbia and its outlying suburbs. RAN works closely with the private and public sectors to serve as a liaison between refugees and the communities in which they live. They seek to both inform refugees about community resources available and empower them to speak for themselves. In Nevada, RAN implemented educational outreach and social programs, community workshops, and career services. Informational sessions are organized at various universities, churches and public libraries in order to educate the general public about the conditions of refugees. RAN’s mission is to educate, inform, protect, and provide services to refugees regardless of race, creed, age, religion, color, gender, sexual orientation or physical challenges. For more information about Refugee Alliance Network (RAN) please visit their website: www.refugeealliances.org.

Thank you to our Grounds Work Day volunteers!
A note from Barry: THANK YOU, Sonya (a brand new member to our UUFR family), Ken, Alice, Ginny, Jeff, Jay and his brother, Tom (who was visiting from Ithaca, NY), Lynne and Barry, for all of your hard work. Special thanks to Ken, who dedicated much of his time to resetting and leveling the stepping stones leading from the parking lot to the Memorial Garden. They look much better and are safer to walk on now. Always scheduled for the second Saturday of each month, the next UUFR GROUNDS Work Day will be on April 8th, from 9-11 a.m.

Scrip Program Changes
The Scrip Program is changing! Scrip orders will be taken only on the first Sunday of every month at the Scrip table in Founders Hall. Orders that have been received can be picked up on the first Sunday of every month. We will have a Scrip table every week in November in anticipation of holiday orders. A list of participating retailers will be published on the UUFR website. Support UUFR, order your scrip cards now!

UUFR Pathfinders
The purpose of the UUFR Pathfinders program is to help new Fellowship members and friends form deeper connections with the Fellowship, establish and deepen their relationships with other Fellowship members and friends, and to learn more about UUFR's programs, activities and events and what it means to be a part of our shared religious community.

If you are a newcomer to UUFR and would like to be assigned a Pathfinder or if you are an established member (including UUFR Parents and Young Adults) of the Fellowship and would like to serve as a Pathfinder, please contact Kathie McCutcheon at connections@uufr.org.

ASL Interpreter
We have a deaf community member who would like to begin attending our Sunday services in April and so we are putting out the call for a volunteer ASL interpreter. If you would be able to do this or know someone who could, please contact Mary at office@uufr.org.

Additional Circle Dinners Added
The initial six Circle Dinners filled quickly. New ones will be posted this Sunday. So check your calendar for April and May and sign up. Potluck dinners provide an opportunity to meet with other UU’s in a small group for relaxed socializing. Sign up in the lobby for the spring round of Circle Dinners. The host usually provides the entrée and guests bring the other courses. Contact Pat Butler at patabutler3@gmail.com with questions.

Photo Directory
Think it would be great if we had a photo directory of all our members? It would be available as a printed directory as well as a digital directory and could be updated throughout the year. This will only be possible if we have a team of volunteers to coordinate photo sessions, help spread the word, and more. Interested? Please email Mary at office@uufr.org.

Book Sale
A note from Diann Irwin and John McLain: Please do not bring books for the sale to UUFR YET! There will be a book sale at UUFR on the weekend of Saturday, September 30 but we are doing things very differently this year. As there is no place to store books at UUFR (the small amount of storage space is already full) and we do not have any place to store books, the book sale is going to operate very similarly to the biannual flea markets. Please save your books at home and begin bringing them to UUFR on Sunday, September 24. On Thursday and Friday, September 28 and 29, we will need loads of volunteers to put out and sort the books for the sale. We plan to open the sale on Friday, September 29 at 4:00 p.m., continue on Saturday, September 30 and end it on Sunday, October 1 at 1:00 pm. Of course, volunteers will be needed as cashiers, etc. on those days, too. So save your books at home and mark your calendar to volunteer to help with the book sale. Thanks.

We'll discuss how people in power have historically and at the present used racism to divide and conquer us, the power of multi-racial coalitions who have worked and are working together in spite of these efforts, and the role each of us can play in the current movement against racism.

This workshop will be led by Triangle SURJ members who have planned and prepared together to offer the workshop. To RSVP or for more information, please contact Rev. Sasha at sashao@uufr.org. For more information about SURJ, please visit www.showingupforracialjustice.org.
