March 2017 ReStart Newsletter
Congratulations to Jordan Daniels,
the February ReStart Student of the Month!
A group of our KEC ReStart seniors and students from KEC's Co-op class had the opportunity to go to a career fair in Dekalb last month.
Cathey Stoddard presented at the 2017 ICEARY (Illinois Coalition for Educating At Risk Youth) Conference in Bloomington, IL on March 3.  She presented on Google Classroom. Mrs. Stoddard uses Google Classroom with all of her students weekly in her classes. There were approximately 35 attendees that learned how to use Google Classroom, set up their own Google Classroom and walked away with an abundance of resources in using Google Classroom.
Congratulations to the following KEC staff members for winning February Project of the Month: Mr. Thomas,
Mr. Martin, Mrs. Boltz, Ms. Johnson, Mrs. Sherman,
Mr. Escamilla and Mrs. Chevy for their RTI Project!
KEC implemented RtI (Response to Intervention) on February 22, 2017 as a way to help students who struggle academically.  Currently RtI is being used in the Restart program with plans for future implementation in our CTE program. RtI is a tiered intervention where students who are failing a class are provided with an opportunity to work in a small group with a subject specific teacher to raise their grade. Every two weeks the RtI committee will meet and assign students to RtI groups based off of student needs.  Since starting this program we have seen success. For instance, after the first three weeks we have 10 less students in RtI then when we first started. I believe that this evidence of the dedication of students and staff at KEC to improve academic achievement.
Take 5
Take 5 with…Mrs. Stoddard

Mrs. Stoddard has been on board at KEC for 3 years now. She loves the fact that she gets to teach a wide variety of subject to KEC students: art, math, reading, and English. She is also one of the few KEC instructors who is 1:1 in her Google classroom. Mrs. Stoddard has lots going on in school, but she has just as much going on in her life outside of school…take a look:
  • Mrs. Stoddard was born and raised in Illinois. But, she most definitely plans to live somewhere on a beach someday!

  • Mrs. Stoddard enjoyed college, but there were 2 things that really surprised her: the cost of textbooks and that she was actually expected to study!

  • If given the choice between more time or more money, Mrs. Stoddard would choose more time
…to spend it with her family on the beach!

  • Her kids have taught her that every day is an adventure, and it’s important to laugh, too!

  • If Mrs. Stoddard wasn’t teaching, there are 3 careers she would love to pursue: serving as an Employment School Specialist for drug court, spending her days as a Trophy Wife, and traveling the world to discover and write about
    …what else…the world’s best beaches!
Take 5 with…Mr. Rood

Mr. Rood has been the building manager at KEC for the past 5 years. Not only does he keep the building incredibly clean and running properly, but he has also shared his knowledge with students in both Construction Trades and Building Maintenance classes over the years. Everyone loves Mr. Rood. Read on to find out why you will to:
  • Mr. Rood plans to do 3 things over Spring Break:
[1] relax, [2], enjoy family, and [3] relax some more!

  • You can keep Dairy Queen for yourself. Mr. Rood prefers Ollie’s Frozen Custard. His go-to treat is a Butterscotch Malt. How delicious does that sound!

  • There is 1 thing in life that Mr. Rood knows for sure:
    you have to pay taxes.

  • No matter how hard he tries, Mr. Rood will never understand women [just ask his wife]

  • If Mr. Rood was given 1 extra hour in each day, he knows exactly how he would spend it…with his 3 grandbabies!
