Research Seminars for Undergraduate Students

Every Wednesday you could attend the “Research Seminars for Undergraduate Students” from 3:10 to 4 p.m in 2155 Marston.  You will have chance to meet two outstanding scientists, learn more about their research, ask questions and find out about research opportunities in their research groups. If you have to take a technical communication class, why not take it in Australia?  Participants will take a shortened version of English 314 at Iowa State in the fall, and then complete the course in Sydney over winter break (December 26 - January 6). Highlights of the program will include corporate visits and cultural excursions provide first-hand experience with technical communication in a global context. Additionally, participants have the opportunity to witness the world famous Sydney Harbour New Year’s Eve fireworks display! For more information please contact Kelly Berigan, khill@iastate.edu. Roy J. Carver Scholarship Program

Applications are now available for the Roy J. Carver Scholarship program.  Twenty awards of $5,200 each (renewable for one year) will be awarded for the 2017-18 academic year.
 
Eligibility requirements:
  • Evidence of significant social and economic obstacles to attending college full time
  • Graduate of accredited Iowa high school or Iowa resident for 5 years
  • Junior classification fall 2016
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.80
  • Demonstrate financial need on basis of the FAFSA

The Office of Admissions: Early Outreach team is seeking current Iowa State University undergraduate students to serve as summer program staff. The staff team will work with talented and gifted students in 3rd-11th grades during five weeks of different summer camps, Adventures and Explorations (OPPTAG). Staff are also hired as day, evening and overnight counselors for the Early Outreach Program (EOP@ISU). This is a great opportunity for individuals interested in education, working with diverse populations, working with young people, and increasing their ability to work as a team. The team is comprised of individuals from a variety of majors, backgrounds, and experiences levels.
 
OPPTAG Programs
Adventures is a split shift position, where staff provide supervision and programming before, during the lunch break, and after the courses for talented and gifted elementary and middle school aged students. 
Explorations is a residential program for gifted high school students. Staff are required to live in the residence hall and be available 24/7 during staff training and both weeks of programming.
Please see the attached flier for more information, program dates and times. Staff members are compensated for their time, and Explorations staff are also provided housing and a meal plan.

Early Outreach Program (EOP@ISU)
EOP@ISU is two, week-long residential program for motivated Iowa High School students of color or first generation college students.  Daytime counselors assist program staff with planning and implementing academic sessions for the students during the day. Evening and Overnight counselors ensure student’s safety and provide social and recreational activities in the evening. Please see the attached flier for position information, dates, and times.

Register for Honors courses and seminars for Fall '17

Honors seminar registration doesn't happen for a few weeks (April 12th at noon and not a moment earlier), but the list of Fall '17 seminars is online now. Check them out and plan ahead!
Consider contracting a course into an Honors course during the fall semester. For more information, check out the Honors website.
Honors at ISCORE: Honors students (Phaedra Lipsey, Ben Sarbacker, Vincent Valeriano, Emily Barske, among many others) and faculty (Jean-Pierre Taoutel and Sandra Looft) presented at the 18th ISCORE on March 3.

Want to go on an industry tour?
On Friday, March 24th, the Upper-Division Outreach Committee will be taking two university vans (12 students) to Danfoss Power Solutions in Ames for a tour of facilities. The tour starts at 3 pm, and students will be expected to meet at Jischke with enough time beforehand to make the drive to Danfoss.  The sign-ups are first come, first serve, so sign up ASAP. If you sign up you will be expected to show up, but if your schedule changes unexpectedly after you sign up contact Ellen Meis at emmeis@iastate.edu

HSB knows you're talented

Java and Jams is coming up and HSB is looking for people to show off their talents for their fellow honors students. If you have a skill and would like to share such as a musical talent, stand up comedy or poetry, come share it in the M-Shop on Thursday, April 6. Sign up here if you're interested in participating!

HSB Dodgeball: get your team ready!

Have you ever wanted to throw at rubber ball at another Honors student? Well, here is the perfect opportunity for you!

Join the HSB Philanthropy Committee in “Chucking for Charity” and be a part of your own dodgeball story!  Teams of five will go face to face in an epic battle to become the ultimate Honors Dodgeball Champions.

Date: March 25th, 2017
Time: 1 - 4 pm
Location: Lied Recreation Center
Cost: $10 per team

Use this Google form to sign-up a team of five people who will brave the court with you. Keep in mind that we would like to have at least 2 honors students on each team.  And while friendly fire is allowed, it is not encouraged, so choose your team wisely!

If you would like to play dodgeball but you can’t quite create a team of five, just sign up individually using this form, and we will find a team for you to join.

There are only 16 team slots to fill so sign up as soon as you can!
