Messages from the Principal, Kim Fraser

Parent Teacher Interviews are scheduled for Friday 7 April (Week 10) from 12:00 to 3:10pm. Students are to be collected from school at 12 pm to ensure the teachers can attend the meetings.

Each teacher has informed their parents of available times for meetings which are 15 minutes in duration.  Please add your name to a time that is suitable. If these times are not suitable I encourage you to make another time with your child’s teacher if you would like to discuss your child’s progress.  There are parents who have already met with their child's teacher this term and may not necessarily need to meet again.

North Metropolitan TAFE students studying a gardening/maintenance course, offered our school the opportunity to have a team visit to complete a building or gardening project.  We were fortunate to have a great team of 12 students come twice this week to help Pete our gardener to build a ‘castle’ for the K/PP students.  They also mulched the bike track and planted out the front garden boxes.   They worked extremely hard and we are truly grateful and appreciative of all their help around the school. The TAFE have also offered to come back at the end of July with some Horticulture students to prune our roses.

Harmony Day assembly is next Friday (31 March). Our diversity makes Australia a great place to live. Harmony Day is a celebration of our cultural diversity – a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home. The message of Harmony Day is ‘everyone belongs’, the day aims to engage people to participate in their community, respect cultural and religious diversity and foster a sense of belonging for everyone.  We encourage children, parents and teachers to wear cultural dress or something orange. Orange is the colour chosen to represent Harmony Day. Traditionally, orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect. Australians can choose to wear something orange to show their support for cultural diversity and an inclusive Australia.

Play After School
Parents please endeavour to leave the school grounds by 3.30pm as the various areas of the school are leased by external providers.  The areas include both playgrounds.  The Yokine Archery club have the oval and surrounding areas (including the oval playground).  These areas are leased from 3.30pm every day by Kosy Kids and Yokine Archery Club. To ensure the safety of the children and persons connected to these enterprises it would appreciated if no other children or adults be in this vicinity.  Your cooperation with this is appreciated.

Music

After the inspiration provided by the KABOOMPercussion incursion earlier in Term 1, music students have been creating percussion ensembles. In small groups, students play a particular instrument such as a guiro or bongo drum. After rehearsing their part, all groups come together to create an ensemble by playing each of the parts together. Senior students have composed their own ensemble music by writing the parts for each instruments in a 4-beat repeating pattern known as ostinato. The musicality and entertainment value of students’ creations has been impressive.

Dear Yokine Community,

My name is Dan Bralich and I am the proud father of two of children who attend Jolimont Primary School.

What has that got to do with you?

Well, most of you will have no knowledge of me or my previous role as Deputy Principal of Yokine Primary School (sometime last millennium). Many of you however, may be familiar with someone I met during my time at Yokine, who ultimately became a pivotal person in my life and only recently left you wonderful school to be closer to our children. You knew her as Miss Sue Poh.

I'd like to thank Principal Fraser who has kindly permitted me to write to you in my modern day capacity as her colleague from Hillcrest Primary School. I am seeking your support with the following pledge:

Our community is proud of its reputation for coming together to create a caring, compassionate family oriented school environment.

I am hoping this request will be one occasion where we may demonstrate some of this caring nature to one of the newest Hillcrest families.

The challenge is to raise $2 000 with the top sponsor getting to shave off my hair. If we somehow manage to double that amount our gardener Mr Cottier has also agreed to remove his follicles. I have been assured that for every subsequent $1 000 an additional teacher will colour their hair.

Qkr! - YPS preferred method of payment.

Here's what our parents are saying about Qkr!:

“I started using Qkr! in the last half of 2016. I was surprised and happy with how quick and easy it is to use. Since my first experience with Qkr! I've honestly not even considered using any other option to pay the school for things like Excursions, Incursions, School Fees & Levies and Swimming Lessons. The thing I like most about Qkr! is that you can make those important payments at any time of the day or night and not have to go to the bank to withdraw cash with 3 children in tow. Like I said earlier, its quick, easy and convenient.” Jackie Kangaroos & Rm 3

“As a full time mum, the Qkr! App allows me to keep up with all school fees, activities and excursions and pay for them in one easy hit! Simple to use and is just as safe as using online banking!” Rachel – Possums & Rm 3
