congratulations to anita bacic, our first                     blast theory residency recipient

blast theory and pvi collective    are delighted to announce  anita bacic  as the inaugural recipient of our residency exchange program grant.  We are grateful to the  australia council,  and in particular, the wonderful sophie travers, for supporting this initiative. we were delighted to receive so many considered and exciting expressions of interest from artists all over australia and we are working towards offering this residency exchange as an ongoing opportunity.

the residency exchange program offers an australian artist and a british artist the opportunity to undertake a residency with blast theory and pvi collective. the companies aim to support artists working in similar fields and to strengthen the sector as a whole through mentorship and critical feedback.

the decision to select anita was unanimous across our panel and we are looking forward to working with her and supporting her residency. anita bacic is a hobart-based artist who explores media old and new, digital and non-digital, focusing on creating interactive experiences and participatory works for individuals. she is increasingly drawn to exploring location-based works in public space mediated by mobile smart technology, for example, her work an/other time or as bacic as mediator in her mobile obscura works.

she recently completed a location-based walk for the streets of moonah, tasmania entitled an/other time. It shares the personal untold stories from the post ww2 migrants who came to tasmania in the mid 20th century. their contribution to the building and adding to the state is not often talked about or acknowledged in tasmaniaʼs story. bacic was born shortly after her croatian parents arrived in australia and her cultural background drives her focus on the migrant experience.

i couldn't be more thrilled with having the amazing blast theory and pvi collective as mentors and support for this work to move on to the next stage. the uninterrupted time to focus on the
project couldn't have come at a better time to bring it to the forefront.

- anita bacic

this project was developed with the support of blast theory and pvi collective. this project has been assisted by the australian government through the australia council for the arts, its arts funding and advisory body.

   what is KISS club?
this year KISS club will be co-curated for the first time by PICA and pvi collective. KISS club is a performance event for ideas in development, featuring emerging and established artists across live and experimental arts practice. created by sydney based artist karen therese, KISS club has been presented by pvi collective at our former residence CIA studios since 2010.

selected artists will present ten minutes of a work in progress to an audience, providing a chance to trial new ideas and receive feedback in a generous and warm environment. a q&a with a special guest speaker will also feature, providing expertise and insight into a topic beyond the arts.

this fast and furious performance night gives audiences a fresh insight into what is bubbling in the hearts and minds of perth’s experimental performance makers and the opportunity to help shape and support new work.

   who should apply?
emerging and established practitioners, groups or collectives from any live art form who are keen to test out a component of an idea or embryonic work in progress in front of a live audience. it can be raw and unresolved as long as you are able to contextualise your intent with the idea.

what our artists in residence did

.

we've waved goodbye to our first artists in residence for 2017. we've had a great time!

alex rinsler [uk] joined us 8 feb - 8 mar. he's a public artist and producer based in the uk and working internationally. he makes large-scale work that focuses on communities, most of which gets burned in the end. for the last year he has been creative lead for blackpool illuminations, arguably the world's oldest and greatest free light show, and he started the lightpool festival there to be a celebration of light and fire.
while he was here, he met with local and national artists, had a development with pvi collective, and ran an artist talk and workshop for perth-based makers.

are we the one? is a collaborative, performative and relational experience for two people, woven together by a custom digital phone app, created by dr keith armstrong and david finnigan, and built by pvi artist steve berrick, which saw it’s initial season at the festival of live art in 2016 at arts house.
dr keith armstrong [qld] contacted pvi about doing a residency to fine tune some details of the work, particularly around the audience’s entrance and exit, and to leverage pvi’s expertise in developing participatory app works. throughout the week the main focus was on rethinking the induction process, and live testing the revised app.
until next time,
pvi collective
