Today is the Spring Equinox, when the sun is in the mid-way point between winter and summer. So its new beginnings and as the earth warms up so should we. We have settled nicely into our new building – was bit cold as many of you know in those first few weeks, but now it’s warming up nicely too, it a fabulous place to work, with a very different feel. Just for clarification I still trade under Refresh Wellness but the Centre is under the umbrella company of Ipswich Sports Therapy Ltd which is on the board outside.

Green Drinks – what to look for in a green drink and our best options.
Foam Rolling – a few videos demonstrating how to roller and its benefits.
Becky – Hot Stone Massage and Swedish massage offers.

Green Powder Drinks
By Jo Tankard

As we know the recommended daily intake of fruit and vegetables is 5 portions (and really that’s an absolute minimum, you should be looking at 7-9). I think realistically most of us do not achieve this or go for mainly the fruit, and the vegetables tend to be the same old same old. Also, in todays depleted soil conditions modern vegetables are less nutritious and have less mineral density than ever before – unless you go organic of course (hint hint!!). Finally, the food mileage cuts further the nutrient content. As we all know, home grown tomatoes and herbs taste far superior to any shop bought. Therefore using a green drink supplement is a really useful option to power up those vitamins and minerals into the system.

Green powders are combinations of lots of land and sea vegetables (a great source of iodine) and other herbs and minerals and sometimes probiotics. They are made up of whole foods, not synthetic vitamins and minerals created in a lab, so your body recognises them and knows how to utilise them.

As usual though, beware of what you choose. Many on the market are vile tasting and have added ingredients you don’t want such as artificial sweeteners, emulsifiers, and even sugar!!!!

What you should look for:
  • Vegetable portions have been gently freeze dried into water- soluble form
  • The sea algae has been ‘cracked’ open to release the nutrients – if they’ve done this they will state so.
Therefore you need a reputable firm that understands these processes.  I therefore recommend the following products in order of preference, which I’ve literally just searched in Amazon, so are available in the UK:

Pure Synergy (drinking this right now!!).– ‘a powdered blend of over 60 green foods, herbs, fruits and other botanicals. The Synergy Company sources its materials from ethical wildcrafters and farmers using sustainable, pesticide free agricultural methods’ Powder £38.99 on amazon, capsules £52.99 for 142g. Tastes pleasantly minty.

Dr Mercola Organic Greens – Organic, Non-GMO, around 26 vegetables and other ingredients including Maca and Rhodiola (both adaptogens, hormone balancing). £32 on amazon.

Dr Udo’s Beyond Greens – ‘includes Omega 3 and Omega 6 essential fats and 33 super foods’ Organic sources.  £24.63 for 255g.

I’ve literally just surfed and reviewed for the last hour and I find problems with most of the cheaper products – anything under £25 looks to be suspect!

Try one of these and I’m sure you will find an energy boost over the next 3-6 months. I take mine as a mid morning ‘snack’. Let me know how you get on with this.

Foam Rolling
By Jo Tankard

I quite often suggest people use a foam roller as a massage tool because the benefits are:
  • Smooths and loosens sore muscles
  • Reduces injury risk from shortened muscles such as Achilles tendonitis, IT Band pain, Knee pain, Sciatica
  • Reduces daily postural stress tension
  • Improves Flexibility
  • Loosens the fascia within your body – Fascia is a band of connective tissue connecting internal organs and muscle groups together.
  • Could possibly reduce cellulite appearance by breaking down the tough collagen cell walls (obviously alongside diet and exercise improvements!)
  • Helps to maintain the gains produced after a Sports Massage
Below are 5 videos of me foam rolling using the above two styles of roller. Please click on each link to view the video on Youtube.
  1. Back of Legs
  2. Front of Legs
  3. IT Band
  4. Glutes
  5. Spine
*SPECIAL OFFERS*

Rebecca Oliver is offering the follows massages at Refresh

Hot stone massage: £45 for 60 minutes

Hot stone massage is a natural therapy in which warmed stones are positioned on parts of the client's body to maximize the therapeutic benefit. The stones used are typically river rocks or other very smooth-surfaced stones made of basalt. These stones are heated in sanitizing water before use. The heat from the stones helps your muscles relax, allowing the massage therapist to manipulate your deep tissues more effectively. It is a deeply relaxing experience.

Swedish Massage: £38 for 60 minutes / £20 for 30 minutes

Swedish Massage involves working the soft tissue of the body, to ease day-to-day stresses and muscular tension, and promote relaxation. It helps to increase delivery of blood and oxygen to the treated areas and can also be used in support of other therapies to assist in the rehabilitation of muscular injuries.
