CODY LOVAAS
Debuts "Lie" Remixes By Eighty-Ninety and Tep No
Premieres at Earmilk and Surviving The Golden Age
When CODY LOVAAS first debuted “Lie”, the San Diego-based Singer/Songwriter's track was hailed by Idolator as an “Insanely catchy pop-rock gem” which “marries pop melodies with some good ol’-fashioned rock sensibility” That same dichotomy and versatility continues to shine through, as Lovaas releases Tep No’s and Eighty-Ninety’s respective remixes of “Lie”, retaining the pop melody and earnest rock heart of the original track while giving it two distinctly different dancehall atmospheres.

The Eighty-Ninety “Lie” remix, premiering today on EARMILK, takes the track to a dreamier, slowed rhythm, with a beat and pace in step with Lovaas’s intimate, confessional vocals. In what Earmilk calls a “delectable downtempo fusion of indie and pop” and a “mellow heater perfect for spring”, the Eighty-Ninety incarnation brings out the duality of “Lie” by juxtaposing Lovaas’s lyrically expressed desire to keep things simple (“half way is right where I want to say”) and transparent (“You know I’ll always be honest, I’m not trying to play this game”) as the alluring beat brings a comfort that provides an ease and relaxation that conveys an increasing closeness as the song goes on. The attractive, achingly human dynamic of intertwined complexity and simplicity carries the listener through the end of the song, and makes it impossible not to go back for more.

Premiered earlier this month by SURVIVING THE GOLDEN AGE, the Tep No remix of “Lie” whisks listeners to a vibrant, roomy dance floor in their mind. The song’s animated ambiance starts simply and grows, as the “minimalist bass synth and finger-snapped beat” beginning leads to growing, opening groove as “warm synths are added in and by the end of the first chorus.” The “noodly synth melody” applauded by Surviving the Golden Age as “the real star of the show”, coupled with Lovaas’s uplifting, upbeat vocals about a life of honesty, gives you plenty to move to and be moved by.

At 18 years old, Cody Lovaas has already established a strong career for himself, touring with the likes of Jason Mraz (who discovered the then 14 year old Lovaas), Ziggy Marley, Switchfoot, and Donovan Frankenreiter, and winning “Best New Artist” at the 2014 San Diego Music Awards. AXS has heralded his artistic integrity, re-affirming that Lovaas “isn’t a teenage pop gimmick” and praising his songs possessing a “signature sound already radiates a maturity of a veteran artist.”

Despite the ever-rising arc that his career has taken, Lovaas has never lost the focus or love for the creative process, telling The San Diego TroubadourBeing able to create something out of nothing and share it with people is the most incredible thing to me… music cures me and it has the ability to cure others.” The connection between the creative side of music and it’s healing powers is not just something Lovaas speaks, but a point of charitable dedication with which he lives and prides himself on, becoming the youngest ambassador for SurfAid and Natural High.

With the Tep No and Eighty Ninety remixes of “Lie”, the musical canvas of Cody Lovaas gains new color to the heartfelt portrait he has been working on and building up for most of his young life. Whether it’s accompanied by guitar (as it has often been since learning at age 7) or synths and dance gravitas, it’s a safe bet that any track with Lovaas on it will, at its core, be a reflection of the impassioned, earnest artist himself.
