Fine Arts:
The Melvin Art Gallery presents the Senior Graphic Design Thesis Exhibition through March 31.  Featuring the work of FSC’s senior graphic design students, this exciting exhibition provides a glimpse into the creativity and resourcefulness brought by these gifted artists to the areas of print and digital media. The Gallery is open weekdays from 9 – 4:30 when school is in session, and admission is free.

On Tuesday, March 28 at 7:30 p.m. in Branscomb Auditorium, the members of FSC’s Chamber Singers, under the direction of Beth Gibbs, will present “From Generation to Generation.”  In a dynamic program with works by composers as diverse as Giovanni Palestrina and Randall Thompson, the talented members of this popular ensemble demonstrate how much we rely on those who have come before us – and how each generation enhances the experience of the next.  The concert is free of charge to FSC faculty, staff, and students, and tickets may picked up at the Branscomb Box Office.

Join veteran jazz performer, composer, and educator Paul Butcher and FSC’s Jazz Ensemble in “Jazz Odyssey” on Thursday, March 30 at 7:30 p.m. in Branscomb Auditorium.  With energy and panache, these talented musicians (along with special guest artists) will share their enthusiasm, expertise, and excitement through appealing repertoire that will include blues, standards, and selected charts from the libraries of Count Basie and Buddy Rich.  Free to the FSC community, tickets are available at the Branscomb Box Office.

The Faculty Artist Series presents its final performance of the season with “Women of Note” on Monday, April 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the Anne MacGregor Jenkins Recital Hall.  Conceived, directed, and narrated by Diane Stahl, this performance celebrates women composers whose contributions to music throughout history have been legion – yet often overlooked.  Among the performers will be the Hollingsworth Trio (Paula Parsché, Michael Sedloff, and Mark Thielen); Fen-Fang Chen and Paula Parsché, piano duet; Steven Laraia, viola; Colleen Blagov, flute; Mark Thomsen, tenor; and Christianne Roll, mezzo soprano – in works by Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, Cécile Chaminade, Rebecca Clarke, Jennifer Higdon, Amy Beach, Mary Rodgers, and others. Admission is free.

The Music Department is pleased to announce the Spring 2017 schedule of Junior and Senior Recitals.
ll recitals are held in the Anne MacGregor Jenkins Recital Hall (B 202) of the Robert A Davis Performing Arts Center and are open to the public, free of charge. We cordially invite you to attend these capstone performance events.  Performance times are listed.

Study Suggestions:
With midterm grades in, students are able to determine areas in which they can work harder to achieve their semester goals. Students should remember to utilize academic resources such as PASS, Writing Center, Scholars Strengthening Scholars, and their instructors. Now is the time to address academic and career goals to be sure this semester is as successful as students have hoped. Student Solutions is another great place for students seeking academic support or needing help finding resources on campus. Taylor Shook, Student Solutions Specialist

From the FSC Counseling Center:
Time Keeps on Slipping.  After spring break, time seems to speed up and the semester ends in a rush.  This perception that it’s all downhill from here can lead students into an optimistic view that “it will all work out somehow.”  They focus on the short time remaining and not on the amount of work that must be done in that time.  In reality, effective time management is more important now than ever.  If your student has fallen behind in class work or other responsibilities or is showing signs of unwarranted optimism, encourage him or her to think through in detail what must be accomplished before the term ends.  A thorough to-do list can definitely be a reality check but it can also function as a guide for the next few weeks’ work.  The list should include all academic assignments (projects, papers, tests, and finals) and all the other things that must be done (work shifts, organizational meetings, and events).  The next step is to prioritize the list so that tasks are done in order of importance and on time.  And, finally, it may help your student to include some method of accountability to ensure staying on track.  Here in the Counseling Center, we often help students with this sort of issue.  We have many students who attend weekly counseling sessions in order to stay focused as they work toward their goals.  We can help your student with time management, meeting academic deadlines, or just generally managing the stresses of college life. Carol Ballard, director

Final Thoughts –
Wow! There’s still a lot that’s left to happen on campus! The next few remaining weeks of the semester will fly by. Yes, that’s right, I said remaining weeks. It’s hard to believe but the end of the semester will soon be here. There are still lots of events, including some FSC traditions to take place. Encourage your student to enjoy but stay focused as the clock ticks down for final grades!

All the best
