New program
JENEPHER MARGARET HOOPER DESIGN RESIDENCIES

WHY
  • Thanks to a major gift from the estate of Jenepher Margaret Hooper (NTS ‘67 Set and Costume Design), funds are available for student bursaries (Scenography/Set and Costume Design) and Resident Artists;
  • The National Theatre School of Canada (NTS) has unique resources, in particular the Monument-National and its Ludger-Duvernay Theatre, which will allow designers to advance their artistic practice and develop their mentorship skills;
  • The Scenography program is looking to build more substantial and longer-term relationships between students and visiting designers who teach at the School;
  • Scenography students are overextended in their production-specific support roles and will benefit from working closely with professional artists over longer periods of time.

WHAT
  • Student Bursaries for Scenography students (max. $5000 per student);
  • Short-term Coaching Residencies for emerging designers to work with students and develop their coaching/mentoring approaches – available to designers in set, costume, lights and sound;
  • Long-term Design Residencies for two artists (max. $20,000 each), one per session, who, depending on the needs of the program and productions, will:
    • be present for design meetings, production meetings, meetings with technical and build crews, load-ins and technical rehearsals;
    • support students to develop their management skills, leadership and understanding of their artistic practice;
    • work directly with the Program Director to develop the pedagogy of the program and the pedagogical evolution of each student;
    • have access to the School’s resources to examine elements of their own practice;
    • provide ongoing feedback about the program to NTS.

WHO
  • Student bursaries are available to current NTS students;
  • Coaching Residencies are available to emerging artists coming to teach at the School in design fields;
  • Design Residencies are available to two artists with 5-10 years of experience, initially selected by the Program Director and eventually to be selected by application.
