FREE Safe Kids Missoula Family Fun and Safety Tips on April 8, 2017 at YMCA's Healthy Kids Day

Our Foundation-led Safe Kids Missoula Coalition will be offering interactive, educational, child safety activities at Missoula Family YMCA's free Healthy Kid's Day event on Saturday, April 8 from 9AM to noon. Parents, caregivers and community members can learn how to protect children from preventable injuries through hands-on games and take-action information that can help families decrease the risk of home fires, unintentional poisoning, vehicle crashes, pedestrian collisions and drowning.

Preventable injuries are the number one cause of death for children in the United States. But, the important thing to remember about preventable injuries is they are preventable. Safe Kids Missoula Coalition consists of more than 30 community experts and volunteers dedicated to keeping families in western Montana safe. You can learn more about the Coalition and ways to paticipate by visiting safekidsmissoula.org or by calling the Foundation office at 406.926.2522.

Be Sun Smart Winter Campaign Wraps Up
Foundation for Community Health partnered with ABCFOX Montana to promote winter and reflective sun skin cancer and melanoma prevention. Part of our Be Sun Smart initiative supported by the Steven Robinson Memorial Endowment, our work encourages individuals to practice sun smart steps all year round.

Unprotected exposure to UV rays from sunlight is a primary cause of skin cancer. Although exposure to sun can be less in winter, UV rays still reach our skin. Additionally, snow reflects sunlight on to the skin, adding to one's exposure. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, and one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. To decrease your risk of skin cancer, it is important to wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, protect exposed skin with long-sleeved shirts and wide-brimmed hats and wear UV-rated sunglasses or goggles. The ABCDEs of skin cancer detection can guide you in keeping an eye on moles, birthmarks and freckles.

Our winter sun smart educational spot can be seen on our Foundation's YouTube page. Learn more about our Be Sun Smart initiative on our website.
Safe Kids Spotlight: Missoula Prescription Drug Task Force
Each month, we feature one of our Coalition partners and share information about the important work they do to make safety a community priority in western Montana. This month, our Safe Kids Spotlight is on
Missoula Prescription Drug Task Force.

The Missoula Prescription Drug Task Force (Rx Task Force), a work group of the Missoula Forum for Children and Youth, is a collaborative and proactive community effort to prevent underage substance use and foster the development of healthy and resilient children and youth. Deaths due to the improper use of prescription and over-the-counter medication are on the rise in Montana. The Rx Task Force focuses on educating the community about the importance of proper use, proper storage and proper disposal of prescription and other medication to prevent medication abuse, misuse and unintentional poisoning. These steps positively impact individuals, families, our community and water ways.
