New program
Indigenous Artists Residencies

WHY
  • As a national organization, the National Theatre School of Canada (NTS) must understand its role in the National Reconciliation Process and begin to build meaningful relationships with First Nations communities. To do this, the School must develop training opportunities for Indigenous artists so they will access the School's important physical and creative resources;
  • These training residencies are designed to meet the interests and the needs of the invited artists;
  • These residencies respond to a demand in the professional market.

WHAT
  • Residence of up to two years:
    • on the model of a boutique program: the artist chooses a curriculum of courses from those offered at NTS (1st year);
    • or a mentorship model: NTS supports a personal artistic project to help feed the demand for plays and works in developing markets (2nd year);
  • Implies a direct impact on the ongoing transformation of the School through sharing and teaching;
  • These artists are the ones who are able to speak for their communities and they will tell the School how best to help them.

WHO
  • NTS will accommodate up to four active resident artists, Anglophones and Francophones;
  • The Indigenous Artists Residencies are open to emerging or mid-career artists who already have a deep-rooted practice of performative art;
  • The first resident artist is Carlos Rivera, who will complete his first year in May;
  • Sheena Akoomalik, an Innu artist from Pond Inlet, has just begun her residency; she will begin with distance learning, followed by an intensive in the summer of 2017.

WHEN

Already in place:
  • Two artists in the English section (currently).

January 2018:
  • Official launch;
  • Two francophone resident artists will be added to the program.

HOW
  • Rather than dictating programs, artists in residence design a training path that meets their own needs;
  • The funds for the Residence:
    • Diversity Fund (NTS)
    • Caisse de la culture
    • Other pending funds
