Dear Antonians,
 
Hilary Term at St Antony's has seen the College discuss an incredibly vast range of topics; from talks on 'China and the West: Crossroads of Globalisation', to 'Postmodern Feminism in Nigeria' and 'Photojournalism in Kashmir'. We have welcomed distinguished speakers including Professor Louise Richardson (Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford) and Lord Jay of Ewelme (previous British Ambassador to France and Permanent Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs) who looked at the implications of 'Ireland and Brexit'. 

We also welcomed this year's Visiting Parliamentary Fellows, Lord Ray Collins (Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Development and former General Secretary, Labour Party) and Baroness Kate Rock (former Vice Chair, Conservative Party).

Summer VIIIs post-Regatta Dinner: 27 May – Oxford
St Antony's Boat Club - there will be an Old Rowers formal dinner held after Summer VIIIs (24-27 May) in College. 

Middle East Centre 60th Anniversary: 15-17 September – Oxford
The Middle East Centre at St Antony’s will be celebrating its 60th Anniversary with a range of events at College during the University's Alumni Weekend. Highlights will include;
  • Keynote Lecture: ‘The Age of Accelerations and Its Impact on the Middle East’ given by Tom Friedman (MPhil Middle Eastern Studies 1976), three time Pulitzer Prize winner
  • Panel Discussion: ‘A Celebration of Albert Hourani: Arabic Thought in the Liberal Age fifty years on’ chaired by Jens Hanssen (DPhil Modern History 1993), Associate Professor of Arab Civilization at the University of Toronto
  • Reunion dinner in St Antony’s College Dining Hall

Antonian Fund Hilary Term Grants


The College is please to announce the awarding of twenty one grants from the Antonian Fund to current members of St Antony's during Hilary Term. Applicants received funding for projects that look to enhance life at St Antony's and for the creation of new academic initiatives. Grant winners include funding for seminars and workshops (organised by both students and Visiting Fellows), various mens, womens and mixed sports teams, the yoga society and others. 

For a full list of grant winners, please see our webpage here. Hilary Term's grants will formally be listed once final grant sizes have been decided. 

 

This month we are holding our principal annual telephone outreach campaign. We have selected a group of current students who will be calling our former members all across the world. There are 10 students who represent 9 different nationalities; each one reading for a different degree at the College. 

This is our most effective way of remain in touch with you, and we hope that you will take their call. They will be able to update you on current life at St Antony's, provide you with information about upcoming events and find out how you enjoyed your time at College. They will also raise current funding priorities with you, and will be asking for your support towards either the Antonian Fund, the Malcolm Deas Fund or the Boat Club.

Timothy Garton Ash wins the Charlemagne Prize
Timothy Garton Ash has been named as the recipient of the prestigious Charlemagne Prize for 2017. Awarded from the town of Aachen, North-Western Germany, the prize has recognised special contributions to European unity since 1950.

68 Woodstock Road renamed The Kirdar Building
The formal home of the Middle East Centre at St Antony's College has been renamed the Kirdar Building in recognition of the outstanding commitment of Mr Nemir Kirdar to the Centre and the College. 

Miles Larmer Professorship
Governing Body Fellow Miles Larmer has been formally recognised as Professor of African History at the University of Oxford. 

Warden Recognised in Canada
Professor Margaret MacMillan has been commended in Canada with an Honorary Degree from the University of Toronto, and has been named as an honouree by the Public Policy Forum. 

Rainbow Flag for LGBT History Month
Governing Body voted to allow the College to fly the Rainbow Flag all February in recognition of LGBT History Month, representing a first for St Antony's.

Law & Politics Podcasts
We are pleased to share the podcast recordings from the newly formed Law & Politics seminar series at St Antony's, convened by Sir Nicholas Stadlen (Academic Visitor 2016/2017) and Dr Cathryn Costello (Fellow of St Antony's College). Speakers at the seminars included Lord Joel Joffe (Nelson Mandela’s Attorney at the Rivona Trial), Sir Sydney Kentridge (Defended Nelson Mandela's QC Bram Fischer at his trial for sabotage) and Lord Falconer (former Labour Lord Chancellor).

SEESOX Videos
The South East European Studies at Oxford (SEESOX) programme regularly films and uploads their discussions onto YouTube. SEESOX discussions and lectures focus on the interdisciplinary study of the relationship between European integration and the politics, economics and societies of the Balkans, Greece, Turkey and Cyprus.

We regularly update our website with news from Antonians; if you receive an award, are promoted to a senior post (academic or not) or achieve something else noteworthy please do let us know. Other Antonians will likely be interested in seeing where others have gone. 

Ms Chrystia Freeland (MSt Slavonic Studies) has been sworn-in as Canada's Foreign Affairs Minister. 

Dr Amy King (DPhil International Relations, 2013) has been awarded the Westpac Fellowship by the Australian National University.

St Antony's College tries to keep in touch with as many Antonians as possible, however we occasionally lose contact with some of our Alumni. Here is a "list of the Lost", ordered by year. These are all Antonians for whom we do not have an accurate address on file.

We would be very grateful if you know the whereabouts of anyone on the above list. Please email our Alumni Office with any information.

We would also like to ensure that we have the right contact details for you in the St Antony's Alumni database so we can send you The Antonian newsletter, invitations to events and news and activities from the college.

St Antony’s College seeks to maintain a lifelong association with its Antonians. Information on the College’s Alumni database is held securely and confidentially by the Alumni & Development Office for the purpose of effective contact between the College and its Alumni.
