Work begins on $1T infrastructure plan

President Trump’s $1 trillion infrastructure package is slowly beginning to take shape. Although the debate over repealing and replacing ObamaCare is hogging the spotlight in Washington, work is underway behind the scenes to craft comprehensive legislation aimed at repairing U.S. roads, bridges and airports. Trump has held several meetings on the topic at the White House, where he suggested a 90-day deadline for projects to get off the ground. States have submitted hundreds of transportation proposals for the administration to start vetting, and Congress held a hearing to explore potential funding options. Yet a timeline for considering the plan remains up in the air, and it is unclear how the infrastructure projects would be paid for. “It’s still moving. Just because we’re not out here talking about it doesn’t mean there isn’t work being done,” Rep. Lou Barletta (R-Pa.), who was a member of Trump’s transition team, told The Hill. “It’s not been pushed to the back burner.” Read more 

5 Trends in FMCSA Compliance Reviews

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration recently announced that it is changing the process for performing compliance reviews. Specifically, they referred to expanded interviews with members within the organization. (The truth is, they have been doing this for a while, but recently completed all the training and therefore made the announcement.) Does this mean that compliance reviews have changed? Yes and no. FMCSA had already trended from full reviews to focused reviews. However, there are some things that we are seeing with regards to compliance reviews. Read more

Driver of the Month nominations

Nominations are being accepted for the April Driver of the Month. This honor is awarded to professional drivers displaying a high degree of professionalism, safety and courtesy while performing their jobs. A panel of independent safety professionals selects the Driver of the Month. Winners are invited to the monthly Safety Management Council meeting to receive their award and recognition items. The driver is featured in our magazine, Nebraska Trucker. The Driver of the Year is selected from among the 12 Drivers of the Month annually. SMC Industry Training Series: DOT Level One Inspection in Scottsbluff 

Who needs a CDL? Does my vehicle require a CDL? What are the 37 identified steps checked roadside by NSP Carrier Enforcement? The Nebraska State Patrol Carrier Enforcement will demonstrate the DOT North American Standard Level One Inspection Procedure, a 37-step roadside check. Vehicles will be elevated for better viewing. Who should attend? Owners, drivers, fleet managers, safety directors, human resources - open to all interested parties. 5:45 p.m. Check-in begins and 6:15 p.m. Program with dinner provided.
