Narraguagus Jr/Sr High School Provides Accuplacer Prep for Seniors

A recent study by the Public Policy Institute of California (www.ppic.org) found that only 16 percent of students enrolled in developmental education complete a certificate or associates degree within six years. Narraguagus Jr/Sr High School and GEAR UP are helping students avoid this barrier to college completion by providing Accuplacer preparation and testing opportunities for seniors. With the help of math teacher Todd Emerson, students reviewed concepts for the Arithmetic, Elementary Algebra, and College Math sections of the test. English teacher Elizabeth Holub provided support for the Reading Comprehension and Sentence Skills tests. Thanks to these opportunities made possible by our GEAR UP grant, 15 students were able to place out of 31 developmental classes!
Students Bring SEEDS Training Activities Back to Their Schools

MSAD 59 used their Mini Grant Money from attending the SEEDS Training in October to conduct a project called Skyrocketing to Success. Students who attended the SEEDS Training program re-created the activities they learned at the training and had Jr. High students participate in a Silent Maze and an Agree/Disagree activity. Megan, Emily, and Brooke from MSAD 59 are pictured above.

CALL FOR GEAR UP STUDENT STORIES
All of our GEAR UP students have a story to tell. It's up to us to help them find their voice to tell it. Do you know a student who would be interested in sharing their story with GEAR UP Maine? Be it a story of success or struggle, we want to hear it and share it. It's so important now, more than ever, that our students' voices are heard. Please contact GEAR UP Maine Communication Specialist, Kayla Hopkins kayla@syntiro.org if you are interested in diving into this student story-telling adventure.
SCRIBE Tips & Tricks
March Scribe Tip/Trick

With several months of SCRIBE use under our belts, it was time to review what our services look like in SCRIBE and the ease of their analysis. After several weeks of working with the data quality control director at SCRIBE, we are issuing this document that should make it easier to determine services and their entry to SCRIBE.

During the next 2-3 weeks, we'll be transitioning to the service types listed in this document, 2017 GEARUP Maine Services Guidelines v2.4.

Data stewards, watch for new service templates in SCRIBE, a how-to video for naming the services, and the go-ahead date to resume entering new services for 2016-2017.

Questions or concerns? Contact the GEAR UP Maine data manager, Becky Young at becky@syntiro.org
