Beer Tastings

Saturday March 18th, 1-4

Yes, the capital of the United States of America now has a beer to call its own. A beer brewed within the city limits and available citywide. A beer representing a delicious and uniquely American blend of North American and European techniques and ingredients. A beer that looks just as inviting in a pint glass at the neighborhood bar as in its handsomely designed can on a picnic table at an Appalachian campsite. A beer that pairs just as well with summer's barbecued bounty as with a hearty winter stew. A beer crafted in our nation's capital that reflects the great state of brewing in the United States today.

Included in Saturday's sampling will be El Hefe Speaks! and On The Wings Of Armageddon!

Beer Updates

DC Brau On the Wings of Armageddon

According to Mayan and Hopi calendars the "transition from one world age to another'' will happen on December 21, 2012. As an homage to the "transition" DC Brau has concocted an Imperial IPA named "On the Wings of Armageddon".

OTWOA is a single hop blend* beer utilizing Falconers Flight™. Brewed with just enough Pale malt, Cara-60, CaraPils and Malted wheat to carry the intense hop character onto the pallet.

At first glance, it has an orange hue in the glass with a viscus, rocky head that refuses to dissipate. Upon first sniff there are dominate aromas of citrus, white grapes and grapefruit with light bread and biscuit notes. After the first sip we taste a mellow bitterness that only grows as more is consumed. Moderately carbonated, deceptively smooth, refreshingly dry and extremely heady for a beer at 9.2% ABV.

OTWOA exhibits all the necessary traits to be revered as a world class Imperial IPA.

$11.99/4pk, limited

DC Brau EL HEFE SPEAKS!

We crafted EL HEFE SPEAKS!, our fond farewell to winter (and the return of spring and summer), as a collaboration with John Solomon and Chris Frashier. The pair are well known for their fine (and tasty!) work at Old Dominion in Ashburn, VA, during the mid 90's.

EL HEFE SPEAKS! is a traditionally brewed German-style Hefe. It is fermented around 65°F and hopped with German Tettnang hops. 11 IBUs and 5.3% ABV make this one extremely drinkable.

$11.99/6pk

Wicked Weed El Paraiso

Under cold winter skies we dream of warm summer paradise, of far-off, floating islands where the awakening scents of roasted coffee and husked cocoa nibs restore our work-worn souls. From our first sunrise sip of coffee to our last sunset sip of beer, El Paraiso is the muse of our work and our rest. Our ode to every brewer’s belief that it takes a lot of good coffee to make great beer. 9.5% ABV

$7.99/500ml

Wicked Weed Barrel Aged El Paraiso

For those who think paradise cannot be improved upon, we offer this liquid of extreme repose. Bourbon Barrel Aged El Paraiso is decadence encapsulated. Madagascaran vanilla layers with the bourbon barrel flavor in a flawless and intoxicating wave. Dark cocoa nibs and obsidian coffee lend a roasted indulgence fit for an island king. Transform your paradise, and slide in to the warmth and wonder that is Bourbon Barrel Aged El Paraiso. 10.3% ABV

$13.99/375ml

Wicked Weed Hop Cocoa

We crafted Hop Cocoa to be a smooth porter that packs a potent chocolate punch into every sip. Authentic Dutch cocoa powder combines with robust, dark cocoa nibs from our neighbors at French Broad Chocolate Lounge to create a silky smooth balance with our heavy handed hopping process. This dark beauty is a comforting companion at the end, or beginning, of any day! 6.5% ABV
*marshmallows not included

$10.49/4pk
.

Wicked Weed Freak of Nature

Freak of Nature. Noun. 1. An unusual, unexpected natural phenomenon. 2. An outlying, west coast style double India Pale Ale brewed with an abnormally large quantity of hops. 3. A delicately crafted, and crushable ale designed for fresh and immediate consumption. 4. A hophead’s vice or downfall. Ex: Though warned about its habit-forming hoppiness, they were seduced by the dank, tropical, and drinkable Freak of Nature. 8.5% ABV

$6.99/500ml
.

Wicked Weed Pernicious

Pernicious implies influence that is harmful in a way not easily noticed. This beer is harmful, not because of overwhelming hop bitterness, but because its balanced brightness insidiously ruins your expectations for all other IPAs. This hop delivery vehicle is crafted to enjoy fresh and often and because of its drinkability and clean finish you’ll never look at IPA the same again. The harm is done. 7.3% ABV

$10.49/6pk
.

Wicked Weed Marina

The daughter of a poor, ailing farmer, Marina was wrought with the burden of responsibility. Her father had done his best to raise her with all the love and lessons befitting a princess. Time passed and with it her father. Her worry for the land deepened and dominated her every thought. One night, Marina found a letter scribbled in her father’s hand: “Do not fear; you are the daughter of the king, sister to Medora, raised outside the kingdom to keep you safe when war was upon us.” Marina, unburdened and full of rejoicing, returned home to her sister, and it was said of them, never did such just and loving rulers watch over the people.

Marina is a blonde sour ale aged in wine barrels with over one pound per gallon of peaches and apricots. The result is a delicate, hazy-gold ale with deep stone fruit character. 6.5% ABV

$19.49/4pk
.

Heavy Seas Alpha Effect IPA

With a lightning strike of exotic hops, the Alpha Effect is a hazy and dank IPA thundering with juicy hop aroma and flavor. With a hefty 7%, the Alpha Effect has enough malt to balance the ridiculous amount of hops we used to create this category 5 monster. Hazy, but never muddy, this is an expertly brewed IPA. Take cover, the Alpha Effect is in effect!

$10.99/6pk
.

Lagunitas Davey Murray's Best Scotch Ale

This Scotch Ale is sweet, but not cloying. It's strong, but not brash. It's smooth and smokey, like a good dram among friends. Cheers! 9.5% ABV

$12.99/6pk
.

Allagash Mattina Rossa 12 Point

Raspberry defines the flavor, aroma, and hue of Mattina Rossa. After adding raspberries during the brewing process, the beer sits in stainless for primary fermentation with our house yeast. Next, Mattina Rossa goes into red wine barrels—with a mix of Lactobacillus, Pediococcus, and Brettanomyces—to age and sour for around eighteen months. We finish by mixing the beer back into a stainless tank with fresh, local raspberries. Fully matured, Mattina Rossa is a fruity, funky beer whose tart notes of lemon rind, raspberry, and pomegranate precede a biscuity finish. 6.6% ABV

$14.99/375ml
.

Allagash St. Klippenstein

At the brewery, we celebrate a holiday full of free ham, potlucks, and strong stouts; it’s called St. Klippenstein Day. In honor of this joyous event, we brew a bourbon barrel-aged, Belgian-style strong stout of the same name. Delivering on its satiny black hue, St. Klippenstein offers up a complex, roasty aroma laden with dark chocolate. Vanilla and coconut notes form the flavor’s backbone, while oak from the barrel lingers in its smooth, warm finish.
This full-bodied beer is brewed with chocolate malt, dark chocolate malt, roasted barley, and brown malt. To round out its robust flavor, St. Klippenstein is hopped with Chinook and Northern Brewer, fermented with a trappist-style yeast for a month, then aged three more in bourbon barrels. Happy St. Klippenstein Day! 11% ABV

$18.99/750ml

*Terrapin The Walking Dead Blood Orange IPA

Terrapin Beer Company and The Walking Dead have teamed up to brew the official beer of the undead. With killer blood orange flavor, and a horrific amount of hops, this bloodthirsty Red IPA will have you prepared for the upcoming Zombie Apocalypse. 7.7% ABV

Pair it with white cheddar & gorgonzola, or brraaiiinnnssss.

*Terrapin Lucille

When Terrapin Beer Co and Skybound collaborated to re-release The Walking Dead Blood Orange IPA in 6-pack cans this year, one beer wasn’t enough to satisfy. Raising the stakes they have added a second more limited edition brew to the project.

Inspired by Negan and Lucille, his weapon of choice, Terrapin Beer Co. and Skybound’s super limited release is sure to be a hit. Lucille, a Blackstrap Molasses Stout will be released in 500 ml bottles with a label that does the barbed wire wrapped bat justice.

You don’t have to live in The Sanctuary to get ahold of Terrapin Beer Co and Skybound’s second collaboration beer, but this one won’t stick around long.

$tbd/500ml
.

*Evil Twin Sanguinem Aurantiaco Blood Orange Sour Ale

Brewed with blood oranges and their specialty brettanomyces, this wild ale showcases the adventurous nature of Evil Twin Brewing. Pouring a hazy gold, it has the aroma and palate of orange, lemon, sea salt, lime, green apple, pineapple, pepper, and plenty of funk.

$10.99/4pk
.

*Schlafly Rye IPA

Rye is known to be used mostly in baked goods, but has also historically been used in distilling gins and whiskey, and now, brewing beer. The addition of this nutritious flaked grain is most noticeable at the finish, providing an overall complexity to the beer that’s refreshing, spicy, and crisp. We use the Simcoe and Galaxy hops at the beginning of the boil, and and then Galaxy and Simcoe a second time at the dry-hopping stage to draw out their distinct aromas. 7.2% ABV

$9.99/6pk
.

*Schlafly Hoppy Wheat

A slightly stronger version of our American Wheat recipe dry hopped with fresh Sorachi Ace. 4.8% ABV

$9.99/6pk
.

*Schlafly White Lager

Think of this as a fresher, hoppier Hefeweizen: smooth, cloudy, and golden-colored. This style dates back to the Middle Ages, where the beer was matured in deep vaults and emerged rich in vitamins. 5.5% ABV

$9.99/6pk
.

Hofbräu Maibock

By tradition, the first barrel of Maibock is tapped in the Hofbräuhaus in the last week of April, in time for the merry month of May. The success story of Munich's oldest bock beer goes back as far as 1614.

With its powerfully aromatic flavour and its alcoholic content of some 7.2% volume, Hofbräu Maibock marks one of the high points in the beer-lover's calendar! 5.5% ABV

10.99/6pk

*Domaine Corne-Loup Tavel Rosé 2016

"This is textbook Tavel: bright red color with vibrant flavors of strawberries, rosemary and thyme. Lots of fun on a warm day on the patio, or with garlicky or spicy foods."

$15.99/750ml

Talbott Kali Hart Estate Grown Chardonnay Monterey 2014

A pure fruit expression of Talbott Chardonnay, Kali Hart is lush and lively. Minimal winemaker influence allows Kali Hart Chardonnay to showcase the strength of Talbott's estate vineyards. The rich, inviting nose shows bright tropical notes that continue on the palate, where refreshing flavors of pineapple and honeydew are complimented by refreshing acidity. A generous mid-palate leads to a long citrus and tropical fruit finish with hints of French oak and minerality. Kali Hart Chardonnay is named after Robb Talbott's youngest daughter.

$19.99/750ml
.

Talbott Kali Hart Estate Grown Pinot Noir Monterey 2014

90pts - Wine Enthusiast: "This well-priced bottling offers Italian herbs on the nose, from oregano to marjoram, alongside tart red cherries, dried tobacco, cola and a touch of smoke. Graphite minerality frames the sip, which shows red cherries cooked with thyme and bay leaf as well as rustic sagebrush. It's complex, tense and lingering."

$24.99/750ml
.

*Vina Robles Petite Sirah Paso Robles 2012

90pts Vinous / Antonio Galloni - "Dark purple. Deeply pitched black and blue fruit aromas are complicated by suggestions of vanilla and cola. Fleshy cassis and blueberry flavors gain sweetness and spiciness with air, picking up licorice and smoke nuances. Finishes on a note of blackberry compote, with supple, harmonious tannins that come in late."
