March is off to a pawesome start!

Did You Know?

  • As a “no-kill,” open-admission, rural county animal shelter, the FSPCA had a Live Release Rate of 91% last year, and we’re proud to report a 98% LRR to start off 2017—your continued support helps to assure saved lives!
  • The shelter routinely cares for 80-150 animals at any given time.
  • The animals eat around 2,500 pounds (over one ton!) of food every month.
  • The FSPCA spends a minimum of $125 for every kitten and cat, and $170 for each puppy and dog, to provide routine veterinary care (spay/neuter surgery, micro-chipping, vaccines and boosters, preventatives, testing, etc.). Specialized treatments are in addition to this routine care. In total, these crucial shelter Veterinary Care expenses were over $46,000 for 2016.
  • During 2016, 46,985 animal care days were provided by our dedicated shelter staff!
Irish Eyes are Smiling: All March long, any red-haired adult pets will have $30 adoption fees!
SPONSOR A SPAY, PREVENT A STRAY!
Last year, spay/neuter costs, alone, for the FSPCA were nearly $30,000. Even with discounts, spay-neuter surgeries average $100 each. You can support 2017 FSPCA spay/neuter success by “Sponsoring a Spay or Neuter Surgery” with your donation to our spay/neuter fund TODAY!  Your support will allow us to spay or neuter every animal for whom it is safe, and give them their best chance at a happy, healthy, furever home! Click here to donate.

Why this vital care matters:
Keep your eyes out for our upcoming “Pawprints” Spay-Neuter campaign at Fluvanna businesses.  If your business would like to be a part of the Spay-Neuter solution, and support the work of the FSPCA, please contact outreach@fspca.org to learn more!
HOW ELSE CAN YOU HELP our furry friends?
  • The FSPCA needs more volunteer help with dog walking, medical transport, and adoption events! Even if you have just a few hours, you can help the shelter animals immensely by giving them extra TLC during a walk, transporting for medical care, or by showing them off for adoption at an event. Visit our website or give us a call (434-591-0123) for more information! The FSPCA needs YOU to volunteer.
  • Kitten and puppy season is right around the corner... Please consider donating kitten/puppy milk replacer, kitten/puppy canned food, and pet nursing bottles. We'd love to be very prepared for all the new babies soon to come! Support our local pet supply stores, or visit our FSPCA Amazon Wishlist if you need help finding the exact products we need.
  • Adopt and share our Lonely Hearts Club members, who’ve been in the shelter’s care for over 6 months! There are currently 4 dogs (Buddy, Brent, Dobbin, Ozzy) and 4 cats (Scar, Morticia, Juliana, Bubbles) in the club, and they all have low $20 adoption fees! These furbabies just need a chance to show a family how great they are- please help us to find their furever homes soon!
FOSTER FAMILIES:

Last year, 158 Foster Families provided love and care to 351 animals. <3

Thank you to our amazing fosters, including Brenda who volunteered to foster our sweet Darcy during her recovery from leg amputation surgery. This wonderful foster Mom even worked with Darcy on housebreaking and learning to sit! Our special pup also received a wonderful "doggie spa day" courtesy of Monticello Grooming. Darcy is doing great, and right around now would be the time that Darcy would be looking for a home to call her own… except she stole the heart of her foster mom, and now her foster home is her furever home <3
Our foster families help us by providing short term or longer term care, which allows shelter animals to grow, recuperate, socialize, and learn about family love. Learn more about fostering on our website or by calling the shelter. Foster Families play a critical role in the FSPCA's ability to help as many Fluvanna animals in need as possible. With kitten and puppy season quickly approaching, please consider becoming a foster home for young furbabies!

PUPDATES:
  • Remember the picture below of Kupkake and her new family from the very beginning of the year?! Well great news, all of the puppies (Pankake, Spongekake, Cheesekake, and Spicekake) were adopted last week. Even better news for you- Kupkake (momma beagle) is still available for adoption! You really couldn't ask for a better dog.
  • Dobbin says "THANK YOU!" to everyone in the community who has supported him. All the funds he needed for his surgery were raised, a transporter volunteered to take him to and from his surgery in Richmond, AND a foster home was lined up for his recovery!! His surgery went well yesterday, and he’s now recovering with the help of his loving foster.
  • Waylon here still needs a foster home to finish up his surgery recovery time. He has to stay in a crate at all times other than for potty breaks, and would love the TLC provided by a foster for about the next month. Please call the shelter if you're able to help him, 434-591-0123.
