UM Sustainability Committee Holds Campus Workshop
On Friday, March 10, students, faculty and staff gathered in Anna Irvin Dining Hall for a candid discussion on University sustainability issues.

The event, hosted by the UM Sustainability Committee, consisted of guests gathering at one of several tables with assigned sustainability issues. These topics varied from general issues, such as water and waste, to more University specific topics like purchasing and grounds.

Each table consisted of two team leaders, environmental studies professors or students, who helped guide the discussion to identify sustainability issues and what solutions could alleviate them. After 30 minutes, guests switched to a different table to discuss another topic.

Each table’s team leaders jotted notes about the discussions and provided them to Dr. Susan Caplow, assistant professor and coordinator of environmental studies, to compile into the sustainability committee’s plan going forward.

UM Bass Anglers Association Ranked 8th in the Nation
The University of Montevallo’s Bass Anglers Association is now ranked the 8th best collegiate fishing team in the country, according to the most recent standings by Cabela’s School of the Year.

The designation comes after the team placed in the top 13 during the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Regional, which took place between March 2 and 4 on Winyah Bay in South Carolina. The team will compete in the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship later this summer.

University Seeks Nominations for 2017-18 Montevallo Masters
The University is currently accepting applications for the 2017-18 Montevallo Masters until Friday, March 17.

The Montevallo Masters is an organization comprised of 18 to 20 students who serve as the official hosts and hostesses of University events.

They assist with a variety of University events ranging from Founders’ Day, to commencement to Undergraduate Research Day.

Any faculty and staff who know a student that would fit the role of Master is urged to have the student fill out the application on OrgSync.

UM Theatre Present William Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing”
The UM production of William Shakespeare’s comedy “Much Ado About Nothing” will premiere this week.

The production, directed by Michael Walker, features a cast of 20 student actors and musicians. This telling will be set in New Orleans during the 1940s with musicians and vocalists incorporating music of the era.

Faculty, staff, students and community members are able to attend a special matinee performance at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 16 for a discounted ticket price of $10.

All other performances are $15 for faculty and staff and will run Thursday (3/16) through Sunday (3/19) at 7:30 p.m. with an additional 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday.

Faculty/Staff Highlights

Dr. Ted Hoffman, assistant professor and director of music education, along with Drs. Renée L. Baptiste and Charlotte Hester of Jacksonville State University and the University of Mobile respectively, coauthored five repertoire resource guides appearing in volume four of “Teaching Music through Performance in Choir” series.

Student Highlights

Jennifer Payne was recently selected as an Albert Schweitzer Fellow, a national program that selects graduate students to create leadership development programs to improve the health of disadvantaged people and communities. Payne, the only fellow representing the counseling profession, will use a biblio-therapy-focused group counseling approach in the attempt to reduce adolescent aggression at a treatment center/alternative school for one year.

University Happenings

University Hosting Informational Session on Immigration Rights
The UM Latin American Studies Minor and the Foreign Languages Program will host two information panels on immigration rights in Comer Auditorium.

The first will be held Wednesday, March 15, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. The second will be held the next day, March 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. This second session will feature immigration lawyers who will present and answer any questions. Both sessions will feature translators.

Montevallo Branch of AAUW to Present Style Show, Luncheon and Silent Auction
Montevallo’s chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) is hosting a multi-faceted fund raising event on Thursday, March 23 at the Stewart Student Retreat from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The event will consist of a professional dress fashion show with styles by Belk, a luncheon catered by Southern Sweets and a silent auction. Funds raised will go toward the local AAUW chapter.

Ticket reservations are $16 and may be purchased by contacting either Tonja Battle, Amanda Melcher or Tracy Rockco. All ticket reservations must be turned in by Monday, March 20.

Donations Needed for Second Professional Clothing Drive
Throughout the month of March, the University will be accepting community donations for the second Professional Clothing Drive, hosted by the Offices of Partnerships and Outreach, Service Learning, the Career Development Center and Phi Chi Theta.

Donations will benefit UM students as they prepare for job interviews, internships and other business professional dress requirements.

The drive is requesting men’s ties, shirts, jackets, slacks, belts and shoes and women’s shirts, jackets, slacks, skirts, dresses and shoes. Donors can drop off items Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the Global Community and Outreach Building (GLOCO) or schedule a pickup by emailing Kelli Holmes.

UM Bookstore Offers Sales on Hats, Trade Books
The Barnes & Noble Bookstore on Main Street is holding a 25 percent off sale on all hats through Friday, March 17. The store is also offering 50 percent off new trade books and 75 percent off all clearance merchandise. Every purchase comes with a free Peach Tea Monster Rehab.
