Community Relations Manager Carol Bruser Roasted for The Arc of Shelby County
On Thursday, March 9, UM’s Community Relations Manager and the Program Director of Leadership Shelby County, Carol Bruser endured jokes and cheers atop a golden throne, all in the name of charity.

Bruser’s roast, held at the Pelham Civic Complex, was hosted by advocacy agency The Arc of Shelby County.

Guests enjoyed complimentary hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction as Shelby County Chief Deputy Chris George, former state Supreme Court Justice Patti Smith and county commissioners Kevin Morris and Elwyn Bearden provided sharp observations and anecdotes about Bruser.

By the event’s end, guests managed to raise $15,000 for The Arc of Shelby County.

UM Sustainability Committee Holds Campus Workshop
On Friday, March 10, students, faculty and staff gathered in Anna Irvin Dining Hall for a candid discussion on University sustainability issues.

The event, hosted by the UM Sustainability Committee, consisted of guests gathering at one of several tables with assigned sustainability issues. These topics varied from general issues, such as water and waste, to more University specific topics like purchasing and grounds.

Each table consisted of two team leaders, environmental studies professors or students, who helped guide the discussion to identify sustainability issues and what solutions could alleviate them. After 30 minutes, guests switched to a different table to discuss another topic.

Each table’s team leaders jotted notes about the discussions and provided them to Dr. Susan Caplow, assistant professor and coordinator of environmental studies, to compile into the sustainability committee’s plan going forward.
