Whit Dickey: drums
Mat Maneri: viola
Matthew Shipp: piano

Vessel in Orbit presents the first new group music in over a decade from singular drummer-composer Whit Dickey. And a most welcome return it is!
This is astonishing sonic architecture. A richly melodic and deeply focused album, with structural integrity and emotional resonance at its core. It was created together with the equally impeccable improvisers Mat Maneri on viola and pianist Matthew Shipp; each of these men has a lifetime commitment to creative music, and they share a musical relationship with one another that dates back decades. Dickey’s wonderfully inviting compositional structures provide fertile platforms for his esteemed colleagues and, par for his work as a leader, he cedes the spotlight to the collective as a whole. Wide-open listening and fluid expression abound here. This is a very special release, folks.

WILLIAM PARKER  &  STEFANO SCODANIBBIO
Bass Duo

(CENT1013)  CD  6-panel digipak

Click album cover to Listen & Order.

William Parker: bass, composition
Stefano Scodanibbio: bass, composition

Bass Duo presents the historic and only performance meeting of these two renowned and innovative bass masters, each representing distinct musical traditions; both fully committed to the summit at hand. It was recorded during the Udin&Jazz 2008 Festival in Udine, Italy at Teatro San Giorgio.

William Parker (Bronx, NY, January 10, 1952) ought be well familiar to all recipients of this email, but a quick recap.. William was heralded some time ago by the Village Voice as “the most consistently brilliant free jazz bassist of all time”. He has been a key figure in the New York and European creative music scenes since the 1970s, and has appeared on well over 150 albums to date. He has also been perpetually presenting his own far-ranging and highly acclaimed work as a leader since the mid-90s.

Stefano Scodanibbio (Macerata, Italy, June 18, 1956 / Cuernavaca, Mexico, January 8, 2012). During his too short lifetime Scodanibbio was renowned as an interpreter and collaborator with many of the major composers writing for the contrabass (Bussotti, Donatoni, Estrada, Ferneyhough, Frith, Globokar, Xenakis), and he performed dozens of works written especially for him in major festivals throughout the world. The Los Angeles Times acclaimed his “dazzling, disciplined virtuosity,” stating that “he lifted the instrument into new realms.”

This concert recording was produced for release by William Parker on his own Centering Records imprint, and is pressed in a special edition of 1,000 copies. Packaged in a deluxe 6-panel digipak, it features liner notes by fellow bassist-composer Mark Dresser, and Parker himself.
