HOLY WORMS

Manna from heaven. The holy bread that sustains us in the wilderness. The bread that cannot be corrupted by greed or inequality. The bread that fills our communities with justice as it fills our stomachs with just enough. The bread that teaches a people how to be different, the bread that teaches slaves how to be free.

If only all food and goods of the earth melted and bred worms when we gathered too much or tried to hoard, would our chains be lifted? Where is our manna in these times of the one and the ninety-nine percent?

But do not despair, for manna is only a foreshadowing of a greater bread, the Bread of Life that hangs bloody from a cross. The bread that is the very Word of God, the very Flesh of God. The bread we eat every Sunday.

This bread teaches us that we are loved in our weakness and our brokenness. This bread fills our communities with mercy as it fills our hearts with the gushing forth of Hope. This bread teaches us to be with the poor, the rejected, the alone and the insane; and to find God there. This bread is the life of the world.

Let us eat our fill.

PRAYER

Cloud who guides us in the wilderness
Pillar of flame who guides us in the darkness

Heal us of our greed

Let us treat all our possessions as though they will breed worms
Holy worms that free us to be generous
To give like there’s no such thing as saving

Teach us that your death is life
And may your death mark everything we do
May it fill our hearts and turn them from stone to flesh

May the bread of your crucified body
give life to our world
