Chigwell School's senior public speaking team into Rotary Youth Speaks national final
Chigwell School's Senior Public Speaking team are into the national final of the Rotary Youth Speaks competition after competing at the regional final in Ipswich on Saturday.
The team - Matilda Scarborough (chairperson), Christopher Collins (speaker) and Ziyad Chaudhary (vote of thanks) - defended themselves against senior teams from the Perse, Hitchin Boys School and Bishop’s Stortford College.
The three rival teams were comprised of Sixth Form students but Chigwell's Year 10 team more than held their own in terms of maturity and presence.
Christopher’s speech on whether the monarchy is an outdated concept was received with rapturous applause by the adjudicators and audience.
Head of English Emma Rea said: “We were delighted when the team was successful in winning the heat.”
Chigwell will now take part in the national final in Telford on May 7.
