HSP News #9 - Changing To Grow

We are changing the focus of our newsletter from this issue forward, as there are many wonderful resources about high sensitivity now, (including on our website at http://www.hspsensitive.com). From now on, we will be highlighting and reporting more about the work, plans and mission of the National Centre for High Sensitivity including our upcoming events, workshops, resources and aims for HSPs in the UK.

I am only one, but I am one.We have plans to do much more around highly sensitive people in the UK - so much is possible in terms of information, support, and events specifically designed for HSPs. We would like to support as many of you as we can on your journey to become more empowered and create more fulfilling, harmonious and authentic sensitive lives. In this issue you will see a wide range of services and events that we are offering so far, or planning for highly sensitive people and those who would like to support them. More will go on our calendar in the next few months. We also highlight areas, where you could get involved with what we are doing at the NCHS and help our work.

Do let us know, if you have any ideas for things the NCHS could be doing and if you would like to volunteer some support or funding. The National Centre for High Sensitivity are still just a handful of enthusiastic volunteers mostly, who are passionate about supporting highly sensitive people and raising awareness. The more we are able to expand our resources and our workforce, the more we would be able to develop our services for HSPs all over the country.

I hope you will enjoy what is on offer for HSPs in the coming year (more will go on our calendar soon) and we are looking forward to seeing those of you who will attend our future events :).

The Highly Sensitive Person - CPD for Professionals

Would you like to be able to help more of those minority of people who could be the majority of your clients? It is not widely known that almost half of therapy clients have sensory processing sensitivity according to Dr Elaine N Aron. We are running a day for therapists, coaches, educators, social workers, health care professionals and others who work with highly sensitive clients. We will look at what sensory processing sensitivity is, how we can identify a client with this trait and ways of working that are effective and appropriate for this client group. All information is based on the seminal work of Dr Elaine Aron, renowned research psychologist and Jungian analyst.  Professionals attending this course can get a free entry to the HSP support directory on the NCHS website and also referrals from the NCHS, as many HSPs approach us to link them to professionals aware of the highly sensitive trait. You can find out more and RSVP here to our next CPD for professionals  on the 13th May (quality checked by the National Counselling Society) or forward details to any professional or organisations that would benefit from understanding more about highly sensitive people.  This training day can be presented at your own venue, in most parts of the country, if there are at least 10 people attending. We would especially like to arrange this CPD in London, since this is where we receive most enquiries from clients looking for appropriate counsellors and other professionals. Please enquire more about this from Barbara Allen - Williams.

Rest and Recovery Retreat for HSPs

It's ok to slow down at times, even if there's a lot you have to do. In fact, it's essential to slow down, rest, recover and regain your energy consistently, as you work towards your goals. The downtime as a result of burnout can be far longer than those few moments, hours or days you take to do what you need to do to feel great. Recharging is even more vital to those with the highly sensitive trait. This three day retreat is designed specifically for HSPs, so you can take as much downtime as you need in beautiful surroundings, combined at times with the gentle, supportive and inspiring company of other highly sensitive people. One to one  and group specialist support from Barbara Allen-Williams, the founder of the National Centre for High Sensitivity, is also included as part of this retreat. Contact Barbara Allen - Williams for more details, if it is time for you to seriously replenish your sensitive nervous system. We would need to know how many of you are attending in good time to be able to go ahead with this.
Sometimes I need to go off on my own

Could you be an HSP Meetup Facilitator?

HSP Meetups are one of our most popular services for highly sensitive people. These are meetings to gain information about the trait, with opportunity to share ideas and tips on living life to the full as an HSP, run in a supportive and gentle atmosphere. We would like to increase the areas of the country, where these Meetups could be organized, so more of you could find other HSPs aware of the trait and learn from each other. We would like to hear from potential volunteers, who would be interested in starting an HSP Meetup in their area, who would get free training and support from the NCHS. No therapeutic background required, as these meetups are not therapy groups, we are just looking for HSPs, who have few years of experience of assimilating authentic sensitive living and who are keen to raise awareness about the trait in their area. Any experience of working with groups or people would be also helpful. If you are interested in this – just contact Barbara Allen - Williams at the NCHS. It would be also helpful if people, who have previously indicated some interest in similar roles in the past would get in touch again, so we can compile up to date information about this.

HSP Support Weekend in Manchester - Hooray!

At last, there will be an HSP Weekend of Meetups, discussion, training, information and support in Manchester this year! You can find out more about high sensitivity (sensory processing sensitivity) from Barbara Allen-Williams, the founder of NCHS and meet others like yourself :).We will also be offering assessment and training to volunteers who might like to explore the idea of running an HSP Meetup for us. You can RSVP and attend one or both days and you can quietly leave any part of the day, if you need a space to re-charge. We are aware that HSPs fare better in small groups, so places on these weekend talks, discussion and workshops will be limited accordingly - book early if you are keen to attend. Find more details and RSVP here, if you are interested in coming along. We would love to welcome you there!

HSP Talk and Walk Mentors

Some HSPs new to the trait find it extremely useful to spend some time walking in nature with an HSP, who has a few years experience of assimilating authentic sensitive living, and with whom they can have conversations and ask questions about the trait. This is our ‘Walk and Talk’ service piloted in Hampshire and we would like to increase the number of areas we could offer this. Some of you have taken advantage of this service already and from feedback provided, we know it is helpful and that more of you would like to use it. Find out more here, if you would like to do a ‘Walk and Talk’ in Hampshire. We will assess your need, explain what it entails and there is a sliding fee, but it’s well worth it. We would also welcome you to apply, if you would like to offer this service to other HSPs (assessment, training and support provided) – just contact Barbara Allen - Williams at the NCHS.

Any Questions? - Live Online Q&A

Discovering the concept of the highly sensitive trait, is like opening a secret door to a new world. It can be bewildering to learn about all the aspects of being an HSP that cannot be changed and to know how can we cope better with the challenges of the trait. Fear not - you can learn a lot of incredibly useful information about the trait that will help you manage your sensitivity better and also start to harness the gifts that come with being an HSP. A good chance to ask your questions are the HSP Meetups - if you can attend them - but there is now a chance to ask your questions about high sensitivity online, as well. You can attend these events by downloading and installing an easy to use app called, Zoom (free of charge and similar to Skype). Do let anyone know about this new opportunity, who could do with learning more about high sensitivity.
