A Great Success

As usual the Surrey Schools Regatta drew a huge entry from a range of schools across the County.  On a blustery day everyone gave it their best shot, and the final results were 1st St. Catherines; 2nd RGS and 3rd Glebelands.  There are loads of pictures on our facebook page.  Click this link:

Many thanks to everyone including the Race Officers, Safety Boat Officers and Crews, Photographers and especially the shore crew who organised and fed the participants.
DUTIES  - Urgent Vacancies

The above event, and every day of sailing at Papercourt relies on the members carrying out their allocated duties.  We are currently changing from DutyMan to Sailing Club Manager to organise the Duty Rosters, but there are still a couple of Duties left in DutyMan, that need filling which people may not have noticed in their enthusiasm for the new system:

Urgent Vacancy on Sunday 2nd April for Safety Boat Officer
Easter - Vacancies for Friday 14th - OOD and PRO
Easter - Vacancies for Sunday 16th - SBO and ARO

This is an ideal opportunity to volunteer and get your Jan to June Duties done and dusted, leaving you free to go sailing when the weather is warmer!  Use DUTYMAN to volunteer for these. Go to this page  http://www.papercourt-sc.org.uk/duties-guidance-notes/ and click on the DUTYMAN link

If you have been allocated a new Duty from Sailing Club Manager, please do not forget to log on and confirm the Duty, or the system may allocate you another one.   Duties are now loaded until the end of October, so if you would like to pick your own date, or arrange to do duties with friends of family, get in quick.

NB you can use the menu on the right hand side of the SCM duty page to change your password if (like the editor) you can't remember the one allocated to you

But What Does it All Mean?  Some newer Members may be a little confused by the letters - so here is a quick guide to Duties.

OOD - stands for Officer of the Day - no qualifications needed except to be a friendly face and man the Tea Bar.  Ideal for newer members to meet lots of people.
SBC - Safety Boat Crew - again no qualifications needed.  You will be on the water in a Safety Boat, assisting the Safety Boat Officer (helm/driver) to launch the safety boats, and put them away at the end of the day and to keep everyone safe on the water.
SBO - As above, needs to hold Safety Boat qualification or above, and then drives the safety boat, and directs rescue operations or capsize assists.  Will also need to help the PRO move race marks to the correct places.
PRO - Runs the day's racing - setting courses, starting and finishing races, entering results - needs experience and to be familiar with how we run the races at Papercourt - if you are interested please contact a flag officer to discuss.  Also responsible for deciding whether racing should go ahead in poor conditions - usually consulting the sailors.  He is assisted by the
ARO - Assistant Race Officer - no qualifications needed, but a clear head and ability to help with results both on and off the water.  Does what it says - Assists the PRO.
What a Work Party - What a Lunch

Another fantastic work party was held on Sunday 19th of March, where the club and grounds were made pristine for the coming season.  A strong turn out of members for this bi-annual duty not only enjoyed the satisfaction of what they cleaned, created, built, painted but also enjoyed a wonderful free lunch with a choice of 4 mains and the most delicious sticky toffee pudding and ice cream.

Of course not every one could be there and I know a few were away flying the flag for the club at events around the country, but for those that feel they missed out, we have some interior redecoration needed in the club house, which can only happen during the week, so if you are handy with a paint brush and can get a small team together for some mid week painting - please let me know house@papercourt-sc.org.uk or grab me when you see me.

RS AERO DEMO DAY

Papercourt is home to 6 RS Aeros and we would love to make it more!  The Aero is ideally suited to Papercourt: it’s light weight means it makes the most of every puff and shift.

RS have agreed to run another demo day for us on Sunday 9th April. The exact format will depend on numbers, but we will likely kick-off around 10am.

If you are interested in trying out the ultra-light, easy to handle, responsive, super-fun Aero, please contact Mark Carleton
(e: mark.carleton@iee.org, m: 07715 114 165).

Establishing a New Dinghy Class at PSC

There seems to be an appetite for establishing new class of dinghy to cater for those sailors that are finding the likes of the Solo a bit too demanding as the year’s creep on, or perhaps are tired of being cramped in a Laser. If we are to get this done I think it is necessary to move as quickly as possible so that we can get started this season.

First, we need to know the potential interest – please could those interested let me know ASAP and also whether they are very likely to join a new fleet or are possible candidates.
If there is sufficient interest, we need to agree the class to be adopted and hopefully arrange trials at Papercourt -  and finally agree the best way of establishing the class quickly.

When I have a list of those interested, we will organise a meeting to discuss the details as soon as possible.   James Carleton

It's all Happening at Papercourt - Read on

As we move into the early part of the Summer Season there is so much going on so get your diary out and put this lot in:

The Spring Launch Supper - on Saturday 29th April - As soon as you see the details book fast before tickets sell out

Rules Evening - Wednesday 26th April - all your queries answered by the amazingly knowledgeable Martin Smith  and the bar will be open!

The Easter Series - Four Days of Sailing Friday 14 - Monday 17th April -  following the format of one Pursuit and two GH races each day with five races to count for the series over the four days - low scoring system.

The Open Day - Saturday 13th May  This is the day when we open our doors and our hearts to everyone - usually about 300 visitors, and try to take them all sailing, and show off our club.  The whole day requires many many club volunteers to fulfill many many functions, so please look out for opportunities in the near future to put your name down.  This day traditionally brings in a raft of new members whose subscriptions and enthusiasm keep our club the vibrant place that it is.

Sailability gets under way - Friday 21st April  Always happy to have more volunteers - contact john@beynon.org.uk if you would like to get involved.

TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES

The Spring Course for Adult Beginners is full, with a waiting list.

There is a two day course in half term for beginners on 31st May and 1st June.  Work is in hand on this so watch this space for more details of whether this is the course for you.

Budding Dinghy Instructors - if you have always wanted to be one, we are running another course Sunday 2nd - Thursday 6th July, with pre-assessment date to be arranged.  Contact tom_key@hotmail.com to register your interest.

It may be that there are some Dinghy Instructors out there who are hiding their light under an upturned hull - if you are already qualified and would like to get involved, contact Peter Lytton on the129ers@ntlworld.com. The club also has some funding available for Dinghy Instructors who would like to qualify as a Senior Instructor - if they are prepared to be involved with the training programme on a regular basis.  Again contact Peter for a chat if you are interested.
Upcoming Open Meetings

Topper - Saturday 8th April - see poster

RS 200 - Sunday 23rd April

Laser - Sunday 7th May

Contact your class captains for further information - use the Supported Classes tab on the website homepage.

No club racing on these dates.

Wetsuits are (nearly) off

The Club Rules state that Wet or Dry Suits must be worn up to the end of March - Hooray that is only 5 days away, so we can all look forward to shorts and t-shirts from then on - if only.  Every sailor must make their own sensible decisions about what to wear after 1st April, but everyone must wear their buoyancy aid when sailing, in the safety boats (or suitable alternative) and on the jetties, even when launching and recovering dinghies.
