From the Desk of Mr David Smith - Senior Deputy Headmaster: College

An article, by Jeff Wicks, which appeared in the Sunday Times on 12 March is one all parents should have read. It was titled the following: “Pushy parents ‘a danger’ to the kids”
What follows is a synopsis of the main points in the article:
Pressure-driven depression is very real amongst teenagers. According to Sports Science Institute psychologist Clinton Gahwiler, a key driver in depression is “identity foreclosure”, when performance becomes everything. This happens when a teenager settles on an identity prematurely, without exposing themselves to other avenues which might also have shaped their personality, values and outlook. Teenagers are pushed too early to specialise in one sport, or when parents, coaches or schools overemphasise the meaning of sporting achievements like being selected for the first team. When self-worth was threatened by injury or failure, the child falls victim to depression.

Many teenagers are taught to believe their value and worth is based on how well they performed on the sports field or in the classroom. When Kagiso Rabada failed to make the junior Gauteng cricket team, his parents took him to dinner to celebrate making the trials -  an attitude and approach all parents should copy. Teenagers must play to enjoy the game and parents must support their kids no matter what team they represent. The worst possible scenario is pushing teenagers to play a sport to fulfil what parents could not achieve in their youth.
Certainly much to consider from this article. Have a wonderful weekend

Junior City Councillors by Di Webb

Last Tuesday evening, the new co-mayors of the Johannesburg Junior Council and their fellow councillors were inaugurated. The council of 2016-2017 celebrated a year of successful projects and fellowship. We thank our two councillors, Merrick Hughes and Luke Tollman for their dedication and effective representation of our school. We are delighted to report that Marcell Scheepers and Khwezi Luthuli are our elected councillors for 2017-2018. We wish them and their fellow councillors all the best for their period of service. We have no doubt that their combined energy and enthusiasm will allow the JCC to tackle all the challenges that may present themselves.

PREPARATORY NEWS
At the end of this term we will bid farewell to two members of staff:

Mrs Knowles, current Deputy Head of the Junior Prep School will be leaving St David’s at the end of this term to take up the position as Head of King David remedial school. Having taught at Mini Marist, as a Grade 6 teacher and as leader of the Junior Prep Phase, Mrs Knowles has contributed significantly to St David’s over the past fifteen years. We wish her every success in her new position.  A special farewell assembly is being planned for 6 April for staff and boys to bid a fitting farewell to Mrs Knowles.

Mr Lazic will be leaving St David’s at the end of this term. As a school boy, teacher intern and fully qualified member of staff, Mr Lazic is a true Marist educator, one who has given much of himself to the boys in his care. As reliable as the day is long, we will miss his dedication to St David’s and welcoming smile. Mr Lazic has chosen to experience teaching abroad and we wish him every success in all his future endeavours. We look forward to celebrating his contribution in an appropriate manner towards the end of the term.
SENIOR PREP REPORTS

The Senior Prep (Grade 4-7) reports will be emailed to parents today. Please notify the school office if a report has not been received by Monday, 27 March. Please note that parent interviews are scheduled for next week. See separate correspondence for details.

SPORT

Due to the short athletics season as well as the camps that have taken place during the season, and the inclement weather, it has been a logistical nightmare trying to complete all pre-contested inter house athletics events. As a result, some of the pre-contested events will be completed on Monday the 3rd April and Tuesday the 4th April and it is vital that boys attend athletics practices on those days, in the same times as usual for their age groups. Thus, Tuesday the 4th will be the last official day of the athletics season.

INTER HOUSE ATHLETICS
The 1st of April is inter house athletics for under 9 to open in the prep school. The inter house will begin at 8am. The high school will be playing a full set of home rugby and hockey fixtures against St Stithians, thus we know that parking will be at a premium. If at all possible, please only bring one car per family, and please be patient with security guards and staff as we try and deal with the situation as best we can.

Reflection for the week

I SAID: “LORD HAVE MERCY ON ME.

Keep on working, with fear and trembling, to complete your salvation, for God is always at work in you to make you willing and able to obey his own purpose.  Do everything without complaining or arguing, that you may be innocent and pure as God’s perfect children. Phil 2:12b-15a
