Mud Season - the "fifth" season
I don’t have to remind anyone that this bit of New England weather is temporary, and while there is much ballyhoo about the advent of Spring, well folks, in our neck of the woods, we really understand that the Mud Season, aka “fifth season,” will certainly greet us first.
While we await the chance to be outdoors, the Board of Directors have been busy these past months planning several initiatives to improve general operations. Our ten committees have been meeting and preparing a 2017 calendar chock-full of programs.
The building maintenance and preservation team, known as the Tuesday Crew, has also been hard at work repairing and glazing all the windows in the Scytheville House in anticipation of being fully restored by the time the Village opens on Sunday, May 28.
Prior to that time, we have some special events in store for you—Curtains Up with the New London Barn Playhouse on April 19, Young At Art on May 13, and 4th Grade Open House, May 26.

Curtains up: a preview of The Barn Playhouse 85th Season
Please join us for a very special evening at the Meeting House in the Village on April 19 when New London Barn Playhouse artistic director Keith Coughlin and cast will be on hand for a sneak peek at the upcoming 85th season.
A tradition unto itself, this is the very first event of the season for the Barn Playhouse. The fun starts at 7 p.m.
You'll get the inside scoop on what's in store this year: songs, scenes, backstage tidbits, and personal stories. This very popular event is always well-attended. Be sure to get there early for a good seat!
Cost: $4.00 Members; $8.00 Non-Members; Children under 12 FREE.
Young at Art 2017
The New London Historical Society is looking forward to giving young artists (grades Kindergarten – 12) a chance to show off their creative side. Students are invited to exhibit their artwork and judges will award CASH prizes in age categories.
Artists may submit a single work of art in one of the following media: drawing, painting, 3D/mixed media, or photography.
Registration packets are available on the New London Historical Society’s website, or from local school art teachers or other art teachers and mentors in the area.
New this year is an award for an artistic rendering of an historical subject. Any entry that depicts either a local historical building or artifact may also be entered for the Special Historical Representation Award.
We are thrilled to announce a distinguished panel of Judges for the 2017 Art Show: Artists Ann Feeley Kieffer, Kristen Ash Chertikhin, Terry Moore, and our neighbor Tomie dePaola.

Hands-on History Camp Opens in July
Back by popular demand the Hands-on History Camp will be offered again in 2017. The theme is “exploring local history that shows life in the 1800s in New England.”
Check out our campers from last summer as they enjoy games, dancing, cooking on the open hearth as well as spinning and rug hooking. This is a wonderful opportunity to expose your children to a technology-free era as they learn about local New Hampshire life in the mid 1800s. For us grandparents, who frequently host our grandchildren for part of the summer, this is a great opportunity for all of you.
Especially popular is our blacksmith forge where campers create their own wrought iron hook guided by our blacksmith.
They will also learn about the wonderful carriage collection that includes a locally used stagecoach and Mt. Washington wagon.
Scheduled for the weeks of July 10 and July 17, you may choose a one-week or two-week adventure.

Over There Over Here—Commemorating the Anniversary of U.S. involvement in WWI
 Over There, Over Here: World War I and Life in N.H. Communities is a multi-group collaboration (MUSE) commemorating the 100th anniversary of the United States’ entry into World War I. The goal of the series is to put the War into a social context. This year-long event will feature exhibits, programs, lectures, and book readings.
NLHS, Tracy Memorial Library, the New London Archives and Kearsarge Council on Aging are participating over the next 6 months offering programs and exhibits in New London.

What do I have to do?
The range of tasks and responsibilities is quite comprehensive, and we are sure to have a spot for all ages and aptitudes. You can choose from working behind the scenes with the Village maintenance crew, to greeting guests who visit the Village and Museum. Or, perhaps you would like to lead a group of children in games or crafts. It could even be that an office environment calls to your particular skill set. The project, slated for spring of 2017, is an important initiative and is indicative of the core values of our mission to preserve the Village buildings and the artifacts stored within them.
Scytheville House
Built in Elkins in 1835, the Scytheville House now has a prominent position at the entry of the Village. It has literally become the hearth and home of the New London Historical Village.
