We are delighted to announce that the office of SINAPSE Director has been taken up by Prof Alison Murray as of 1st April. Prof Murray is the Roland Sutton Professor of Radiology at the University of Aberdeen and Director of the Aberdeen Biomedical Imaging Centre. She also is a founding member and executive member of SINAPSE.

Prof Murray is taking over from Prof David Wyper, who has served as Director of SINAPSE for the past 7 years (as successor to SINAPSE Founding Director Prof Joanna Wardlaw). Click here to read a note of thanks from Prof Wyper to SINAPSE colleagues.

I am looking forward to the challenges of taking over as SINAPSE Director. I firmly believe in sharing knowledge and working together and I am passionate about creating opportunities for the next generation of imaging researchers. I appreciate that I have a hard act to live up to the achievements of Professors Wardlaw and Wyper but with the support of Kristin and the network I see a bright future for imaging research in Scotland.

2017 SINAPSE ASM: Submit abstracts!
The deadline for abstract submission for the 2017 SINAPSE Annual Scientific Meeting is this Friday (7th April 2017). We encourage SINAPSE members and students to submit abstracts on research that uses MRI, CT, PET, SPECT, EEG, MEG, ultrasound, or human optical imaging. Awards will be given for best proffered paper in each parallel session (Methodology and image analysis; Psychology and psychiatry; Molecular imaging; Clinical applications), and for best poster.
Also, meeting registration is now open. Please book your place early and join us for what will be an exciting programme highlighting developments in clinical and experimental imaging. More details...

Postdoctoral and Early Career Researcher Exchanges
SINAPSE funds are available for early career researchers using medical imaging technologies to spend at least one month with partner organisations in Europe, North America, India or China, in academic year 2016-17 or 2017-18.
Awards can be used to provide research training and development opportunities while at the same time building experience of international collaboration with academia and/or industry. Click here for more details on the PECRE scheme, and the application form.
The closing date for applications is 19 May 2017.
Additionally, funds from the Pools Engagement in European Research (PEER) scheme are available for supporting SINAPSE members to participate in and compete for European funding. Informal enquiries can be directed to kristin.flegal@glasgow.ac.uk.

SINAPSE celebrates and continues that tradition as the Scottish pooling group for imaging research."

ERASMUS Course on MRI: Basic MRI Physics
25th-29th September 2017
Ninewells Hospital Medical School, Dundee
- A one-week module covering everything from basic NMR, T1 and T2, through to neuro, body, and cardiovascular applications. No previous knowledge of MR physics is assumed. 'Early Bird' reduced course fee applies to registration prior to the end of April 2017.

Innovate UK Biomedical Catalyst call
As was noted in the last newsletter, researchers should be aware of a substantial increase in grant funding via Innovate UK as a result of additional investment in science and innovation by the UK Government.
A newly opened Innovate UK Biomedical Catalyst competition invites applications for a late stage award to test a well-developed concept (innovative healthcare technologies, products or processes) with a 7 June application deadline. The scope includes diagnostic, medical device or other analytical technology projects and drug development projects demonstating safety and efficacy – phase I and II clinical trials are eligible. Projects must be led by a UK small or medium-sized enterprise (SME). More details...

Image of the Month: Micro-ultrasound nerve fascicles

|
Our April Image of the Month, courtesy of Anu Chandra, shows a micro-ultrasound image of in vivo sciatic nerve, in which fascicles can be seen as fine honeycomb patterns. The incidence of nerve damage during regional anaesthesia is high even with the help of ultrasound guidance. The insufficient resolution of the current clinical ultrasound systems and the difficulty in interpreting the anatomical relationships between the tip of the needle and the intraneural nerve anatomy contributes to the nerve damage. Anu's PhD research, under the guidance of Dr Christine Demore and Dr Graeme McLeod, aims in using micro-ultrasound as a tool to visualise the nerve trauma caused by anaesthetic needle penetration during regional anaesthesia in real-time.

SINAPSE Member Profile: Emilio Quaia
|

|
|
Emilio Quaia MD has recently joined the University of Edinburgh as a Senior Research Fellow – Honorary Consultant in Radiology at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. He received his medical degree in 1995 from University of Udine (Italy) with an MD thesis on pharmacology and completed radiology training at University of Trieste (Italy) in 1999. Afterwards, he worked in Hammersmith Hospital in London for one year under the leadership of Prof David Cosgrove and Prof Martin JK Blomley in the field of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (US), which soon became his principal field of research and scientific interest. In 2000 he became assistant professor in radiology at University of Trieste. In 2005 he took the position of research associate in molecular imaging for oncology at MSKCC in New York, USA. Then he returned to Trieste and in 2014 he was appointed as associate professor in radiology, a position he covered up to October 2016. His areas of expertise relate to body imaging (abdominal and chest imaging) and particular US and contrast-enhanced US, CT and MR imaging. His principal research interests are multimodality imaging of the liver, bowel, kidney, and pulmonary diseases. His secondary field of scientific interest is preclinical multimodality imaging (microPET and microMR).
