The Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce Paul Dodson of Tamaqua as the 54th recipient of the Joseph M. Plasko Citizenship Award. A teacher in the Tamaqua school district for more than 40 years and instrumental in establishing Tamaqua’s wrestling program, Paul has since spent his time coordinating Tamaqua’s annual Hunger Walk which raises awareness and money for food banks in Tamaqua, and providing transportation to those in need for doctor appointments and cancer treatments. He has taken on leadership positions at Bethany Evangelical Church and even became program director of the Tamaqua YMCA in the 1960s. As written on one of his nomination forms, “Paul is an outstanding example of servant hood to Tamaqua.”

Step-Up Tamaqua meeting March 27

Step-Up Tamaqua will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, March 27, in Founders’ Hall, Trinity UCC, 22 Lafayette Street, Tamaqua. Normally, the group meets the third Monday of the month.

This month’s meeting features two presenters: Mairead Desmond, executive director of New Directions Treatment Services in Bethlehem, Pa. and Rachel Miller, representing the SHINE afterschool program in Panther Valley School District.
Following the presentations, Step-Up groups, support, treatment, enforcement and prevention, will meet to share updates.
Step-Up Tamaqua is a project of the 501 C3 non-profit Tamaqua Area Faith Fellowship Network under the umbrella of the Tamaqua Area Community Partnership. Its purpose is to address the addiction issue in the community. Contributions are welcome and can be sent to Step-Up Tamaqua, 125 Pine Street, Tamaqua, PA 18252.

On Thursday, March 30th we are organizing a Town Hall meeting on combating blight, to be held at PV High School Auditorium from 6:30 to 8 pm.  State Senator Dave Argall and State Rep. Neal Goodman will be chairing the meeting.  State Sen. Yudichak, and State Reps. Heffley and Knowles will also be on the panel.

On Wednesday, April 12th we are organizing a “One Year Later, Lessons Learned” Town Hall Meeting, featuring the return of Dr. Rachel Levine, Pennsylvania’s Physician General at Tamaqua’s Middle School Auditorium from 6 pm to 8 pm.  Both Levine and Sec. Gary Tennis attended last year’s town hall meeting and will be reporting on successes and missed opportunities.  Last year Sec. Tennis focused on the importance of Drug Courts.  Also present were Judge James Goodman (Sch.) and Judge Joseph Matika (Carbon) to discuss prospects for Drug Courts in those counties.  Schuylkill County has created a full Drug Court, while Carbon has created a Veteran’s Court. Both started on January 1, 2017.  We will be inviting both judges to learn of their findings thus far.

Finally, for Earth Day, Saturday, April 22nd, STEP-Up Carbon and STEP-Up Tamaqua will be coordinating community involvement to spruce up a blighted local park or other public place in every borough/township in Eastern Schuylkill County and all of Carbon County.  We ask the various municipalities to designate a specific area within their boundaries that needs to be spruced up.  Safer Streets in Tamaqua has cleaned up public playgrounds that had been used for possible drug activity.  They have found that by repainting benches and playground equipment with bright neon colors, and using proper lighting, brightens up the location and lessens drug activity at that location.  Once a location has been determined, we will organize volunteers and equipment needed for the Earth Day clean up.
