Congratulations to Ryan Zinke, on being named the 52nd Secretary of the Interior. Zinke was sworn in by Vice President Mike Pence on March 1st. He is the first person from Montana to serve as Secretary of the Interior.

“I am honored and humbled to serve Montana and America as Secretary of the Interior,” Zinke said. “I shall faithfully uphold Teddy Roosevelt’s belief that our treasured public lands are ‘for the benefit and enjoyment of the people’ and will work tirelessly to ensure our public lands are managed and preserved in a way that benefits all Americans for generations to come.”

Join Us: Support an “Olympic” Opportunity
Lake Quinault (Photo by Tom Harpel from Seattle, Washington, United States)

As we begin the second century of the National Park Service, NPT is setting our sights on the acquisition and preservation of numerous high priority lands to benefit our national parks, including a parcel of just under 0.5 acres at Lake Quinault in Olympic National Park (WA). Although small in size, it's big in ecological significance.

The parcel is surrounded on three sides by Olympic National Park and Forest. It is the only parcel in that block that does not belong to the National Park Service. Acquisition will keep it in its natural state by preventing further development along the portion of the stream that feeds into the lake, and it will protect water quality for the Quinault River. The lake and river system support populations of sockeye, chum and Chinook salmon as well as steelhead, bull and Dolly Varden trout. The Quinault National Fish Hatchery, downstream from the lake, raises salmon and steelhead which populate the river. All deserve protection.

In order to acquire this land, we seek to raise $45,000 to purchase the property and donate it to the park. Click here to learn more about this project or contact Maryann Kearns, director of development, at 301.279.7275 ext. 15. Or click here to support this important project today.
Buddy Bison Honors Extraordinary School Leaders
The 2017 Buddy Award recipients, Bobby Caballero and René Hayden (center) surrounded by their third-grade students.

It's award season! We all know about the Emmys, the Oscars and the Tonys. Last Friday, NPT surprised two members of the Elsie Whitlow Stokes Community Freedom Public Charter School with The Buddy, our National Teacher Award for Outstanding Environmental Stewardship.

We typically honor one outstanding educator annually. However, this year we made an exception and chose to recognize two extraordinary environmental school leaders: Bobby Caballero, Dean of Students and René Hayden, a 3rd-grade teacher. Each of them have played an important role in the implementation of the Buddy Bison School Program and engaging their entire school with parks and the outdoors.

"Elsie Whitlow Stokes was one of the first schools to join the Buddy Bison School Program in 2009, our inaugural year," stated Grace Lee, NPT executive director. "Although the program was just getting off the ground, Bobby Caballero quickly embraced our new initiative, realizing the value of parks for his students." And as soon as René Hayden learned about the program, he enthusiastically led the charge as well, using every opportunity to take his classroom curriculum outdoors and teach his students about the importance of park stewardship."

What have the Stokes scholars experienced since 2009? They have paddled on the Anacostia River, rock climbed at Carderock with Secretary Sally Jewell, hiked and explored the planetarium at Rock Creek Park, helped us honor Representative Mike Simpson (ID) with the 13th Bruce F. Vento Public Service Award, enjoyed an annual all-school fall day at Watkins Regional Park where they also camped overnight. And this spring their 3rd graders and René will camp for three days and two nights at Harper's Ferry.

Thank you Bobby, René, and Stokes PCS for leading by example and showing how beneficial and great the outdoors really are!
Save the Date! NPT to Honor Senator Lamar Alexander
Senator Lamar Alexander will receive the 2017 Bruce F. Vento Public Service Award on June 14th at the Newseum (D.C.). Save the date and join us in celebrating this outstanding park conservationist. The Senator is on the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Interior and Environment and the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources where he serves on the Subcommittee on National Parks. Throughout his career, he has been a dedicated and strong supporter of our national parks and public lands. Read the press release here.

For more information on how to support this special event, including sponsorship opportunities and tickets, contact Maryann Kearns or call 301-279-7275 ext. 15. All proceeds benefit NPT’s park preservation and youth education programs.
Buddy Bison Students Meet the Majestic Lady Liberty
Buddy Bison students from Brooklyn Jesuit Prep in front of the Statue of Liberty (NY).

Last month 8th-grade students from Brooklyn Jesuit Prep explored Ellis Island (NY). They took a ferry to the island, stopping to see the Statue of Liberty. Ranger Dennis Mulligan and Ranger Reneel Langdon welcomed the students at the docks and taught them about the statue’s majestic structure. Then at Ellis Island, the students took an audio tour through the halls that immigrants once walked as they entered this country. They learned about Ellis Island's 60+ years as an immigration station.

Our deepest thanks to Statue Cruises for providing the ferry transportation for Buddy Bison students each year and to Richard and Nanci Czaja for their generous annual sponsorship of this school. Because of their important support, many of these students visited these iconic historic sites for their very first time!
Record Visitation to National Parks in 2016
Buddy Bison leads the way for fourth graders at Channel Islands National Park.

During the National Park Service Centennial in 2016, visitation to national parks increased by nearly eight percent. Many of our national park partners including Channel Islands National Park also attributed much of that increase to the Every Kid in a Park initiative.

The park reported an overall 13-percent increase in visitation. However, there was a 20-percent increase in visitation to just the mainland visitor center in the Ventura Harbor, due in part to the many fourth-grade students that participated in the Every Kid in a Park program. The park had a corresponding 75 percent increase in the Junior Ranger program, with over 4,000 kids participating.

“We are particularly excited about the increase in visitation from fourth-grade students to the park. This year we expect over 5,000 fourth graders will visit, thanks to the Every Kid in a Park grants we received from the National Park Foundation, National Park Trust, and National Marine Sanctuary Foundation,” said Channel Islands National Park Superintendent Russell Galipeau.
