Demonstrating gulch work

Several students from Rooney Ranch Elementary School wrote letters to Lakewood about a gulch near their school that needed some work done. The students regularly walk down to the gulch for science class and study the water levels and the environment.

Street Maintenance Division staff members went to the school to demonstrate how they clean up graffiti, clear out gulches with the backhoe, use jet lines with the vacuum truck and run street sweepers. The crew also explained why all this work is important for the environment. Learn more about the division Lakewood.org/StormwaterMaintenance.

Save the ’Zone

Bicycle Colorado and Lakewood are working together to Save the ’Zone, an initiative to educate and encourage residents and employees to help improve Lakewood’s air quality by reducing trips involving only one person in a car. To enroll, participants must live or work in Lakewood and complete an introductory survey evaluating current travel behaviors. They will then pledge to replace a self-selected number of weekly drive-alone trips with walking, bicycling or transit. Learn more at Save the ’Zone on Facebook and become a participant at BicycleColorado.org/initiatives/save-the-zone.

These stations are designed to allow for water bottles to be filled easily, and they are part of Lakewood’s efforts to improve the availability of healthy and nutritious food and beverages through a range of policies and practices. The stations are a result of a team effort coordinated by Lakewood's Resource Development staff. Learn more about Lakewood’s HEAL Live Well efforts at Lakewood.org/HEAL.
