Public/Patient Representative Needed for 2017 UBC Health Awards Committee
UBC Health is seeking one public/patient representative to join the UBC Health Awards Committee. The committee adjudicates the UBC Health Awards including student scholarships and awards for faculty, health professionals, educators and community partners. Read more...

UK Connections
In March, Angela Towle delivered an invited lecture (the Arthur Mitchell Brownlow Memorial lecture) at Queen’s University, Belfast, on the topic of ‘Hearing patients’ voices in medical education and research’.
In a note afterwards, acting head of the medical school, Dr Pascal McKeown, said: “You have provided us with lots of inspiration in relation to how we engage our patients and the communities which we serve”.
The next week Angela reconnected with Geoff Wykurz and Diana Woods (pictured above) in London. Geoff and Diana pioneered the concept of patients as teachers in the UK in the early 1990s and came to the first ‘Where’s the Patient’s Voice in Health Professional Education?’ conference in 2005. Patient & Community Voices Workshops
Patient & Community Voices presented Learning from the Experts: The UBC Aphasia Mentors workshop. UBC healthcare students were invited into the School of Audiology and Speech Sciences to meet with the Aphasia Mentors and learn about Supported Communication for People with Aphasia (SCA), an evidence-based, best practice communication training.
The School of Audiology runs a drop in Aphasia clinic from 10:30 am – 12:30 pm on Thursdays for students wishing to meet with the mentors and learn more about Aphasia. All are welcome!

Positive Reflections and Voices Unheard: Learning from Persons Living with HIV
Healthcare students will be introduced to the challenges of living with HIV through personal stories and reflections of community members with this health concern. Students will also learn about support and advocacy resources available within Vancouver-based community organizations serving persons living with HIV. The workshop is a collaboration with Positive Living BC.
