Happy Monday McGuinness Families! Hope your week is off to a great start. We certainly hit the ground running following spring break. Robotics, Honor Band, Stunt Cheerleading, Speech  and Debate competition, National Spanish Exam, not to mention all the sports consumed a good portion of last week, and will continue to be a major part of our activities this week. Hang on and I will try to reflect on a few of the highlights.

The State Robotics Competition was held in Norman last Saturday. There were 48 teams in the tournament and we had three tie for 9th and one team finished 13th.  A "Big Thanks" is extended to all of our students who competed, and to STEM/Robotic teacher Ms.Lauren Smith for all their work preparing for the event. We will be adding a Robotics Club next fall!

It was great to see our band and orchestra students working with our future musicians during the Honor Band workshop held at McGuinness last Friday. There were 54 students from eight feeder schools taking part in this unique learning experience. Band Director Ms. Julianne Annesley has worked tirelessly bringing our band and orchestra programs back to prominence. Please click on this
link for a glimpse of what our band could look like in a couple years!

Congratulations to the Speech and Debate team for their 3rd place finish out of 24 teams competing in the State Regional Competition. All total, 15 of our team members will advance to the state tournament on April 6 & 7 at OU. Individual Regional Champions were Bryan Box in Lincoln-Douglas Debate, J.R. Gray in Standard Oratory, Cheyenne Martin who was a triple regional champion in Humorous Interp, Poetry, and Humorous Duet with Madison Hart!

All of our students taking Spanish tested their skills against other Spanish students across the country by participating in the National Spanish Exam. The two day exam began last Friday and will conclude this Monday. All of our students taking a foreign language take a national exam. Latin and French exams were given earlier in the month. We will receive test results before the end of the school year.

Congratulations to all of our spring sports teams for all their success last week. The Girls Golf Team won the Big 10 Conference Championship held in Enid last Thursday, and the Boys were runner up. Olivia Schmidt won the individual title for girls and Jackson  Hibbard was the boys champion. Stunt Cheer traveled to Jenks and defeated the Trojans after falling to Broken Arrow in their opening match. The Girls Track & Field team continued their winning ways bringing home the championship trophy from the Bethany Invitational last Saturday. The Boys team also brought home the championship trophy, placing 1st at the tournament. The Baseball team defeated Cache 8-3 in route to a 5th place finish in the Chickasha Tournament. Boys and Girls Soccer and Slow Pitch all won their games last week.

Did you take my challenge and read one chapter in the Bible each day last week? I read the gospel of John. John's gospel is a first hand account of the life of Jesus. John takes us beyond seeing Jesus as a good man, great teacher, or prophet of God. John helps us make that connection that Jesus is truly the son of God, the Messiah, the Anointed One who was prophesized
in the Old Testament. I plan to continue my daily readings for the remainder of Lent and beyond. I hope you will start, or continue to join me!

This week Matthew Kelly challenges us to keep a Mass Journal. I like this idea! How often do I come out of Mass trying to remember what the reading was today, and how did Father connect his message to the reading. OK! I am up for another challenge! This week I plan to write down what I remember from the reading and the homily. I have a feeling Mass is going to take on a deeper meaning than I ever imagined. Stay tuned!

Finally, this Tuesday is a free dress day for our students if they choose to participate. Peru has been devastated with recent floods. Please click on this video to get a better idea of the devastation
, https://vimeo.com/209284103. As you are aware, we have a special interest in the Peruvian people as many of our students, parents and teachers have traveled to Father Uhen's Mission in Piura, Peru. Father Uhen has reached out and asked if we could support the people in his Mission who have lost so much because of the recent floods. Therefore, we are asking students to bring $3.00 and participate in the free dress day. If possible we hope they might give a little more because we have set our school goal at $2,500.00. My hope is that everyone will participate!

Have a good week Irish fans! Spring is here!!

GO IRISH!

Yours in Christ,

David Morton
