This year in Indianapolis, IN, Fire Engineering Magazine will honor Fire Chief (ret.) Rick Lasky with FDIC’s annual Tom Brennan Lifetime Achievement Award.

Chief Lasky is a second-generation firefighter and 36-year veteran of the fire service. Starting as a line firefighter and firefighter-paramedic, he rose through the ranks serving as a company officer, training officer and command-level officer. He has written over 200 fire related articles, two best-selling books and co-hosts the radio talk show “The Command Post.”

Lasky joins an ever-increasing list of Tom Brennan Lifetime Achievement Award winners who have distinguished themselves amidst their peers. Collectively, these fire service icons share a common bond in their desire to improve our profession and their foresight in moving the fire service into the 21st Century one small change at a time.

Several winners also share a common cause: each has been an advocate for firefighter air replenishment systems (FARS).

Paul is a classically trained artist, award winning illustrator, firefighter/EMT and the author of "Drawn by Fire." His work appears in newspapers, magazines, books and on websites worldwide. He also contributes editorial cartoons to Fire Engineering magazine, Fire Engineering.com, JEMS, and Public Safety Communications on a monthly basis.
We are honored to be working with him on this special keepsake.

Recommended FDIC Classroom Session: "Lost, Disoriented And Out of Air: Smoke Hazards In Large Structures"

Smoke is just as dangerous as fire. This class will review the behavior and hazards of smoke in large structure fires. Chief Trevino and Captain Gagliano will help you get a better understanding of how smoke moves in these buildings, and the impact of wind, smoke density, smoke weight and smoke temperature. The group will discuss the imperative that firefighters always have ready access to water and air delivery systems, appropriate air management policies and available technologies to support fire attack. And they'll look at the emergent and latent hazards of smoke on the health and safety of firefighters. You'll come away with a better grasp of the changes that need to be made in tactics, strategy and standard operations and the need for the fire service to move away from a residential mindset to one that incorporates the more complex challenges posted by large structures. All levels.
