Early versions of statues that communicated included ancient Egyptian figures, gigantic in proportions that “spoke” through hidden tubes that allowed the wind to pass through them and make sounds. Centuries later, talking dolls began to have their say, then dolls that cried for their mothers.
Mama dolls have a musical history all their own, literally. We can sing the praises of the man credited as their inventor, b. 1783 Johannes Mäezel, who also invented the metronome. In 1824 he took out a patent for a doll with a synthetic voice. Later, he won an award for it at a Paris exposition.
The original doll is lost, but mama dolls have been made ever since. Some are patent washable dolls that have a “squeak” box that makes the doll cry out, others have a voice box that cry “mama” when the doll is laid down or picked up. <Click here to see full article>
