Opening expositie
Van kaftan tot keppeltje: Kleding en diversiteit in het Midden-Oosten

Prof. Bas ter Haar Romeny, dr. Tineke Rooijakkers (beiden van de Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam) en dr. Gillian Vogelsang-Eastwood (Textile Research Centre, Leiden), nodigen u van harte uit voor de opening van de nieuwe expositie in de TRC-galerie. U mag een introduce meenemen.
Wij hebben de eer aan te mogen kondigen dat de tentoonstelling officieel zal worden geopend door Zijne Excellentie Mor Polycarpus Augin Aydin (Metropoliet van de Syrisch-Orthodoxe Kerk in Nederland) en Zijne Eminentie Anba Arseny (Bisschop van de Koptisch-Orthodoxe Kerk in Nederland), op zaterdag 1 april aanstaande, vanaf 16.00, in het Textile Research Centre, Hogewoerd 164, 2311 HW, te Leiden.
De expositie toont de rijke kledingtradities van een aantal groepen die in het Midden-Oosten leven, waarbij aandacht wordt gegeven aan de ingewikkelde geschiedenis van deze regio. In de tentoonstelling is kleding te zien van onder andere Kopten, Bedoeïenen, Palestijnen, Druzen, orthodoxe Joden, Samaritanen, Koerden en Zoroastriërs. De kledingtradities van deze groepen wordt getoond en bediscussieerd in relatie tot de 'reguliere' kleding in het Midden-Oosten. In de tentoonstelling zijn meer dan veertig complete outfits te zien van zowel mannen, vrouwen als kinderen. Er is ook een historische sectie gewijd aan Ottomaanse kledingstukken, zoals de kaftan en de fez, die de hedendaagse kledingtradities van het Midden-Oosten hebben beïnvloed.
De expositie is onderdeel van het Fitting In/ Standing Out-project van de Vrije Universiteit van Amsterdam, gefinancierd door de Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO)

Exhibition Opening
From Kaftan to Kippa: Dress and Diversity in the Middle East

Prof. Bas ter Haar Romeny, Dr. Tineke Rooijakkers (both of the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam) and Dr. Gillian Vogelsang-Eastwood (Textile Research Centre, Leiden) have the pleasure of inviting you and a guest to the opening of the new TRC Gallery exhibition.
We have the great honour to announce that the exhibition will be officially opened by His Excellency Mor Polycarpus Augin Aydin (Metropolitan of the Syriac Orthodox Church in The Netherlands) and His Grace Anba Arseny (Bishop of the Coptic Orthodox Church in The Netherlands), on Saturday, 1st April, from 16.00, at the Textile Research Centre, Hogewoerd 164, 2311 HW, Leiden.
The exhibition showcases the rich dress traditions of some of the groups living in the Middle East, highlighting the intricate history of this region. They include the Copts, Bedouin, Palestinians, Druze, orthodox Jews, Samaritans, Kurds and Zoroastrians. The clothing traditions of these groups will be displayed and discussed in relation to 'mainstream' Middle Eastern dress. The exhibition shows more than forty complete outfits for men, women and children. It also includes an historical section on Ottoman-style garments, such as the kaftan and the fez, which have so often influenced contemporary dress traditions in the Middle East.
The exhibition forms part of the Fitting In / Standing Out project of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research.
