New 1.Question Interview Below: Dan Radakovich // Athletic Director // Clemson
The AD search committee at UNLV will meet with Collegiate Sports Associates' Turner today to narrow the field to a group of finalists who will go in front of Prez Jessup. The Las Vegas Sun's Grimala reports the search has drawn interest from a wide range of candidates. Committee chair Rapoport: "(Jessup)'s going to consider the recommendations of the committee. He will have heard the pros and cons. He’s not going to sit in on the initial set of sorting [today], but at some point he’s going to want to get to know someone before he gets an offer. Ultimately, it’s his call. Until the committee has a chance to discuss the names, we’re not sure how many will make it to the next cut. The committee will have discussions about their qualifications and winnow the list some, but we’re an advisory committee. He’ll make the call and he knows it’s a big decision." (link)
Bloomberg's Soshnick & Novy-Williams called the news "breaking" yesterday, which isn't entirely accurate since SBD/SDJ's Smith noted the development way back last October, but Notre Dame does look to be moving forward with the process of inking a corporate sponsorship & licensing partner. According to the duo, Learfield, IMG College, JMI & Legends are the finalists. As you would expect, no comment from the university. Of note, one source says TV inventory via NBC will not be part of the assets for whomever wins the deal. (link)
San Jose Mercury News' Wilner takes a look at the Pac-12's strategic approach to raising the profile of MBB as three squads are still alive in the NCAA MBB Tournament. Items implemented in the Spring of 2016 after an intensive study led by Deputy Commish Zaninovich & Senior Assoc. Commish Nevarez included: 1) Reducing travel & time demands for student-athletes, specifically around weekend conference swings; 2) "Adding a dedicated staff member to handle analytics, media outreach and messaging"; 3) Getting Pac-12 Networks broadcasters fully up to speed on the NCAA Tourney selection process; and, 4) Creating a cadre of subcommittees to further explore key issues. Non-conference scheduling was, of course, an inflection point as well, though "guidance" over specific rules has been the approach so far with the goal for each program to win 75% of its OOC match-ups. More. (link); Given the Tourney success by Arizona, UCLA, Oregon & USC, the league is up to 12 units or $21.1M over the next six years so far, could add more starting tonight. (link)
USA Today's Berkowitz has been noting HC bonuses religiously via his Twitter feed, now makes our lives a bit easier by accumulating notes on all HCs remaining in the NCAA MBB Tourney Sweet 16, what they've earned to date & what they could still stack with more wins. Purdue HC Painter has some interesting language in his deal that leaves it up to university Prez Daniels & AD Bobinski to determine an award if the Boilermakers advance to the Elite Eight. I'm not quick enough at math, but it looks like Arizona HC Miller ($725K) and North Carolina HC Williams ($650K) have the most to gain if their squads won the National Championship. Conversely, Kentucky HC Calipari has no performance-based incentives at all. (link)
The Washington Post's Svrluga asks, "Are NCAA tournament refs really better than ever? That seems like a tough call." Longtime ref Clougherty, famous for his call against Seton Hall's Greene on Michigan's Robinson with three seconds left in the '89 title game: "Officials are as good as they’ve ever been, but they come under so much scrutiny now. I made as many mistakes as any of those guys, maybe more." The NCAA's national coordinator of MBB officiating Collins: "Fans have a different viewpoint: that officiating is horrible. My statement would be: These guys are really good. I’m telling you, these officials are really, really good. I think the misconception from fans is that these are bad human beings; they’re fill-in-the-blanks. They’re trying their very best to get even better." Lots more, including the rigorous evaluation process Collins and his four regional advisors use to narrow the officials pool down from 1,000 conference-nominated refs in January to the cohort that gets to wear the stripes this late in the season. "And once they’re there, the refs are evaluated much as the teams are: officiate well and advance. Have a bad game, enjoy the summer." For what it is worth, Collins says officiating has improved year-over-year, with ~94% accuracy during the first weekend of 2017, compared to ~93% a year ago. (link)
Gonzaga AD Roth will be nervously cheering on his MBB side when they face West Virginia today in the Sweet 16 from a tunnel closest to the Bulldogs bench, just as he has for all of the games he's watched in person since the 1999-2000 season. Sitting doesn't agree with Roth’s nervous energy during games and neither does eating close to game time. The long-time AD admits his gameday quirks are "pretty crazy," but says "it’s worked for a long time. It allows me to burn off energy. If I’m sitting in the stands I can’t pace around, can’t yell into my hand. Pregame I’m in the stands, up and down, on the concourse. Halftime I’ll meet and greet and do those things and also postgame." (link)
SEC Country's Bolin reports that HB1249, which allows weapons in various publicly funded buildings across the state, was signed by Arkansas Governor Hutchinson yesterday and goes into effect September 1.Though no word yet from the Arkansas athletic department, Bolin explains that the new law would allow weapons in sporting venues on the university's campus. From the law: "A licensee who has completed the training required under subsection (g) of this section may possess a concealed handgun in the buildings and on the grounds of a public university, public college, or community college, whether owned or leased by the public university, public college, or community college." (link, link - the complete HB1249)
The New York Times's Tracy examines the dichotomy of the NCAA MBB Tournament's unpredictability, which is conducive to providing upsets, and its function to crown a champion. With fans tending to gravitate toward the seeming randomness of a "one and done" tournament, Tracy observes that "favorites prevailing paradoxically feels untrue to the sport, in which, typically, great teams emerge during a season of more than 30 intersectional matchups, rivalries and league tournaments, only to combust in a six-round, single-elimination tournament played by unpaid postadolescents." For contrast, Tracy cites the NBA, which consists of an evenly scheduled regular season and four rounds of seven-game postseason series. Former UCLA and Indiana Pacer MBB star Miller: "In the NBA, the cream always rises. You've got the best players in the world, and when you're playing in a best-of-seven series, the best team's usually going to win." Tracy contends that, among other major upsets, last week's ouster of Villanova by Wisconsin "exposed what any close follower of college basketball understands: The tournament is not optimally designed to filter out college basketball's best team." (link)
Pretty raw, but interesting read from ESPN that I have to imagine your hoops student-athletes may also find eye-opening, "Inside the 'Tinderization' of today's NBA." Thesis: Hardcore partying in the NBA is happening less & less these days thanks to technology (specifically Tinder & Instagram) & along with enhanced private travel, road teams are winning at a much higher rate than decades past. One former All-Star: "It's absolutely true that you get at least two hours more sleep getting laid on the road today versus 15 years ago. No schmoozing. No going out to the club. No having to get something to eat after the club but before the hotel." Lots more. (link)
Real-time leadership context: More high-level executives at Uber have reportedly given notice that they will resign unless CEO Kalanick changes his management style and agrees to the development of a comprehensive strategic plan in the coming months. The main point of contention, according to The Information, is Kalanick's desire to run Uber as if it were a small company, saying that "the bigger you get, the smaller you have to feel." Meanwhile, one executive says Kalanick dismisses "anything that felt to him like we were benchmarking against other companies or referencing 'best in class' practices." Valued at $70B, Uber is currently searching for a COO and has not had a CFO for two years; additionally, four key executives, including Prez Jones and Head of Maps McClendon, have left the company in the past four weeks. Says one person who's worked closely with Kalanick: "When you 'let builders build' (that’s one of Uber’s 14 'cultural values') and have 12,000 people in a company -- on its way to 18,000 -- in 70 countries who are empowered to do whatever they want, you have what we have now: grow at all costs anarchy." UCLA FB HC Mora spent six days on the 50-mile hike up Mount Kilimanjaro to promote the need for clean water wells in East Africa & had this perspective, "If you have any type of empathy for people, you just think, 'This isn’t right,' no matter what the culture, no matter what the history is. And you want to do anything you can to help." More: "We live in a bubble and we’re so entitled. I coach a lot of young men who come from really disadvantaged backgrounds. Yet in comparison to what these people have, I don’t have one kid who comes from a 'disadvantaged background.' They have challenges. But no matter how disadvantaged we think we are, we’re not." (link)

Clemson AD Radakovich denies having any conversations with Virginia Commonwealth about hiring or interviewing MBB HC Wade prior to confirming the return of HC Brownell. Radakovich does say that he and Brownell met for over two hours Saturday and "went through everything...we just kind of went through everything from soup to nuts. ... We had some thoughts and dialogue, and it was good. It was really good. Brad's a professional." After finishing the regular season 16-14 (6-12), season ticket holders, Radakovich explains, were "highly entertained" by several close games but "unfortunately the hero got shot at the end of almost all the movies." As to whether the Tigers need to make a dramatic improvement for Brownell to remain after next season, Radakovich acknowledges that record is a factor, adding: "There are other factors associated with where our program is moving. We have incredible graduation rates, the young men on the team are really good young men representing Clemson very well. Brad is a great representative of the university. ... I'm not going to quantify what needs to happen. But it's important that we maybe have a little bit more of a horseshoe with us next year." (link, link)
More HC Notes: Illinois AD Whitman completes his double, hires Wash U. (DIII) WBB HC Fahey to the same post in Champaign. Fahey has accumulated 737 wins & five National Championships at the DIII level in 31 years of coaching. (link); Doug Gottlieb goes from CBS to Fox, but will also interview for the open MBB HC spot at his alma mater, Oklahoma State. (link); The deal for new UMass MBB HC Kelsey is worth between $800k - $900K for each of the five contract years. Retention bonuses after years 2/3/4. (link); Florida Gulf Coast AD Kavanagh says he hasn't been officially contacted so far about a school wanting to interview MBB HC Dooley. (link); Toledo FB HC Candle gets an extension through 2021. (link); Missouri AD Sterk says he wasn't worried about new MBB HC Martin's track record of only staying at a school for a couple of years. (link); Per ESPN's Goodman, South Dakota MBB HC Smith is not heading to Drake for the same gig. (link); Here are the details of new Washington MBB HC Hopkins' contract, though I guess I've visited the Seattle Times website too may times as I'm not able to get to the article. (link); Grambling State AD Bryant will hire a new MBB HC. (link); St. Mary's MBB HC Bennett & Nevada counterpart Musselman are out of the mix at Cal. (link); Rhode Island AD Bjorn elevates AHC Santonastaso to HC for Women's Volleyball. (link)
Kentucky AD Barnhart handed out extensions & contract upgrades yesterday to both MBB HC Calipari & FB HC Stoops. Cal's compensation will rise to $7.75M next year & then $8M for the duration of the deal (2023-24). Stoops may now wear blue & white through the 2022 campaign & will see his base increase by $250K annually ($3.5M to $4.75M). Among a number of other incentives, Stoops will also receive $250K for every win each season over seven, plus an automatic one-year extension once the Wildcats hit that total, two years if they get to 10. More financial figures included in the piece. (link)
Northern Illinois Senior Assoc. AD for Sports Administration Vickers profiled by LEAD1. Interestingly, says he wanted to be a pharmacist, but then points to solid training in three Fortune 500 companies that built a strong sales skill set, which is very helpful in building strong relationships. Believes the experience of being a student-athletes has been significantly enhanced since his time as a FB player at Notre Dame & it's the knowledge available within the recruiting process that may be one of the most pronounced differences today than during his stint on the field. Walks through the NIU administration working closely with HCs to ensure highly effective visits by prospective student-athletes. Lots more. (link)
The city of Tucson is scheduled to vote this week on the new proposed 25-year lease for Arizona Baseball at Hi Corbett Field. Lease payments for UA would be reduced from $262K annually to only $10 a year, but in exchange, the university would have to make $3M in improvements, take over management and operations of the field, and pay all utilities. The university is waiting to comment on the new agreement until it's approved by both the city and the Arizona Board of Regents. (link)
As part of its strategic initiatives, St. Bonaventure has announced a plan to add MLAX as its 17th NCAA varsity sport beginning with the 2018-19 academic year. The Bonnies are actively pursuing a conference affiliation for the sport, as the Atlantic 10 doesn't sponsor MLAX and will immediately begin the search for a HC. AD Kenney: "Lacrosse is one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States, and it is already one of the most popular sports in Canada. We have a successful club team and significant interest in adding the sport at the varsity level as well. Also, the men's program will complement our women's lacrosse program well and give us another sport that I believe can be very competitive. For all these reasons, we are excited to add men's lacrosse." (link)

The Beaver County Times' Mueller enumerates the challenges awaiting newly named Pittsburgh AD Lyke, which include improving attendance at FB games that don't include Penn State, Notre Dame or West Virginia, boosting enthusiasm to increase donor support and finding a way to enhance the atmosphere at Heinz Field. "She must find a way to make Pitt -- you guessed it -- a football school." And, Mueller, posits, she must do it in an area where the best high school talent typically attends Michigan, Ohio State or Penn State. Simultaneously, Lyke is charged with rejuvenating the MBB program. "If southwestern Pennsylvania is not what it used to be for high school football talent, it is a barren desert when it comes to high school basketball. No program, even a low-major, could sustain itself on local talent gleaned from the Pittsburgh metropolitan area." Citing general expectations in the community that Pitt has the potential to be a more significant player in the ACC, Mueller notes that meeting those expectations, "realistic or not, is the job. Oh, and she has to knock it out of the park with fundraising, something that's always more difficult if the football and basketball teams aren't winning." (link)
Among the factors that contributed to poor attendance at Connecticut MBB games this year, the Huskies' first losing season since 1986-87 is at the top of the list; however, AD Benedict acknowledges that "we need to do a better job. Scheduling is very difficult. We are playing a national schedule and it's requiring us to travel a lot to get the 'home-and-home' games we want. It's a combination of scheduling, TV and start times, the pricing." UConn MBB averaged 8,732 fans, down about 1,700 from last year's average, and that decline also affected the AAC Tournament at the XL Center in Hartford, where overall attendance was down to 27,000 from 45,000 in 2014. TV may not have done the Huskies any favors either, with 9PM weeknight start times or tipoffs on weekday afternoons around the holidays. Benedict: "As a league, we have to look at that. Playing a very important game for us, a conference game, during the AFC Championship week, we probably had less than half our normal crowd. Did I call up and make sure the conference was aware that this isn't good for UConn, isn't good for league? Sure I did." (link)
Former Alabama FB student-athlete Carter has filed a lawsuit against Florida Atlantic FB HC Kiffin and the state of Florida claiming that a position on Kiffin's staff was rescinded unjustly. Carter alleges that Kiffin misled him into believing he had a position in order to leverage Carter's relationship with a recruit, who ended up committing to FAU. According to the suit, FAU revoked the offer after charges of crimes surfaced. According to Carter's attorney, one charge stems from a 2010 incident in which Carter was in the same vehicle as drug paraphernalia, while a separate incident resulted in Carter serving unsupervised probation after being charged with driving without a license. The suit also claims that FAU hired "numerous assistant football coaches...despite significant publicized criminal and ethics charges and allegations against them," including DL AC Mathies who in 2014 was charged with a DUI. That charge was later reduced to reckless driving. FAU declined to comment. (link)
During testimony in the state's case against former Penn State Prez Spanier, former AD Curley and former VP Schultz acknowledge that they should have done more in regards to reporting former FB AC Sandusky. Prosecutors argue that all three failed to act despite knowing police had looked into a 1998 report of Sandusky showering with a young boy. Both Curley and Schultz say they believed such reports to be inappropriate but not necessarily criminal, with Curley adding: "I thought Jerry had boundary issues, judgment issues that needed to be addressed." Schultz also testified that the "original plan" was to contact child welfare services, but that he and Curley became "uncomfortable" with that idea after speaking to former FB HC Paterno. Schultz testified that not reporting the information was a "mistake. ... We should have reported it, like the original plan." (link)
Media: AdAge's Crupi goes in on the Out of Home (OOH) TV ratings measured by Nielsen for ESPN & why they're important. Last year's Rose Bowl saw 1.15M viewers who took in Iowa-Stanford in bars, restaurants, etc., increasing overall eye balls by 9%. SportsCenter from 7a to 10a & the 6p version saw nice gains, as well. Personally, I continue to believe further OOH measurement (which opens to other networks soon) is a big deal in the sports TV ratings debate. (link); Good read on if password sharing is part of the cord-cutting dynamic or not. Some executive believe so, others says it's inconsequential. (link); You should keep your eye on the developing story of advertisers boycotting Google, which basically owns a digital advertising duopoly along with Facebook, as programmic ads for major brands have continued to show up on extremist & offensive content. It's a major issue. (link); @AdContrarian via Twitter, "Heard on the street: McDonald's USA is about to cancel all its Google/YouTube/DoubleClick advertising. This is starting to look serious." (link); Reuters reporter Baysinger: "This YouTube ad "boycott" is certainly giving TV networks a major selling point to buyers right as upfront season begins." (link)
Also Noticed: UMass Senior Assoc. AD for Administration & Finance Herlihy is headed to USC Aiken (DII) as AD. The appointment will be Herlihy's fourth DII AD job. (link); CLC inks Richmond as the Spiders become the fifth school in the CAA to partner with CLC (Delaware, Drexel, JMU and William & Mary). (link); UAB launches the "Ever Loyal Society" for donors contributing $25K or more. (link); Instagram is over 1M active advertisers. (link); Outfront has partnered with CBS & Turner to show live scores of the NCAA MBB Tourney on digital boards in NYC, Atlanta, Detroit, Dallas & D.C. (link); Stanford economist Noll is not convinced the funding plan to bring the Oakland Raiders to Las Vegas will work. As noted, a situation that impacts UNLV. (link); Last weekend's NCAA Wrestling Championships drew 8.6M viewers via ESPN. (link); There are athletes, then there's Vanderbilt's Charley who is the first ever to be invited to participate in both Women's Soccer & Track U-23 National teams.(link)

Clemson Athletic Director Dan Radakovich shares his view on if an AD hiring a new Head Coach should reach-out directly to the AD of the HC candidate for notification of interest. Angles discussed include the use of search firms or legal representation to handle such communication, at what point in the vetting process the call should take place & if generational trends are changing situational dynamics around this topic. Listen by clicking the link. - link (length - 7:29)
