The past month saw Transition Earth host a workshop on the links between conservation, health & community empowerment at the University of Oregon’s 35th annual Public Interest Environmental Law Conference and then later addressing local students in the San Francisco Bay Area on population impacts at the annual Environmental Youth Forum.

Now we’re off to join 400 population activists in Washington, DC at Population Connection’s Capitol Hill Days yearly event to increase awareness of and funding for international family planning, now more important than ever. Spending cuts to family planning hurt people here and abroad, and the environment too. Follow us on social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) to keep up on our happenings!

New Transition Earth Factsheet on PHE

We have a new 2-page factsheet out on the potential of Population, Health and Environment (PHE) projects to empower communities and help protect nature.  It lays out a short explanation of this approach, and some on-the-ground successes. This is part of a forthcoming PHE online toolkit.  Download the factsheet from our Resources page on the Transition Earth website, or below.

Youth and Conservation – from Borneo to the Bay Area

Here at Transition Earth, we've been thinking of how we can build real connection to youth in other parts of the world who are protecting their communities, to help people better understand our impact on the planet and how we can make a difference in our daily lives.

That's why we want to foster a partnership with the ASRI Kids program in Indonesian Borneo to follow the lives of local youth and exchange stories with youth here – and people of all ages – about what's affecting our communities around the world and how we can work together.

To start, we are raising funds to donate to ASRI Kids in their community of Sukadana, in support of the clinic's work educating youth. We hope that this partnership will be a learning exchange and opportunity to cultivate greater understanding of how we are connected.

Beginning next month, we’ll highlight some of the ASRI Kids and how this program is fostering greater environmental and health awareness in Borneo.   Stay tuned!

Transition Earth: Writer’s Corner

Read the latest blog by Transition Earth’s youth writer, Candela Vázquez Asenjo - Killing Our World With Plastic?  It’s an excellent piece on misconceptions on the use of plastics in our everyday lives, and the impacts this has on the planet and human health.

Candela writes, “In reality, we are all hooked on the throwaway plastics, especially with food and drinks. Nowadays, it is becoming more difficult to live without plastic, even if we wanted to.”

It’s hard to argue with that fact.

In solidarity,
Suzanne
