The WADEM Congress is one of the largest inter-professional gatherings worldwide with delegates from over 50 countries participating in addition to representation from organizations such as World Health Organization, International Red Cross/Crescent, Médecins Sans Frontières, and more.

Next month's Congress will feature more than 600 abstract presentations (oral and poster) covering more than 20 thematic areas, 45 non-abstract activities, two pre-Congress Courses (AHLS & POCUS), and one post-Congress research workshop.

Featured Session: How do We Find Good Indicators
for Measuring Disaster Preparedness?

Session Summary:

This panel will present a conceptualization of public health emergency preparedness derived from research in Canada. The context for performance measurement for health systems will be described. Considerations and challenges to developing criteria for selecting good indicators will be discussed, with a particular focus on approaches to rare events such as disasters.

  • Disaster Ultrasound Course - 22 April
    This course aims to teach the use of point of care ultrasound in a disaster setting with the emphasis of empowering the critical management decisions between the periods of rescue to resuscitation. The workshop is offered to medical doctors, physician assistants, nurses, and paramedics who may be deployed during disasters as a team. Read More....

  • Advanced Hazmat Life Support (AHLS) Provider Course - 22-24 April
    The Advanced Hazmat Life Support (AHLS) Provider Course is the premier, international course that teaches a systematic response for the medical management of patients exposed to hazardous materials, including chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear agents. The 16-hour, two-day AHLS Provider Course is the most comprehensive training program, teaching the critical skills needed to evaluate and treat victims exposed to chemical spills, toxic terrorism, and other threats.   • Utilizing Frameworks to Structure Disaster Health Research - 28-30 April
    This workshop will focus on using Frameworks and the Disaster Logic Model (DLM) to systematically structure disaster research studies. The Frameworks and DLM, with defined terminology, will be presented and opportunities provided to utilize them in designing both epidemiological and interventional disaster studies. Read more....

Webinar Summary 

There is an emerging interest in the need to demonstrate a sustainable health legacy from mass gatherings investments. The World Cup and the Olympic Games were opportunities for the Brazilian government to develop a specific policy regarding Mass Gatherings. This seminar will provide an overview of the process developed to identify, classify, and evaluate legacy of healthcare planning in the host city of Porto Alegre for the World Cup 2014.

The webinar will discuss examples from the literature on how this development allowed the government to assess and evaluate the available resources to provide crucial support, and build capacity for future events, such as the 2016 Olympic Games.

Webinar Presenter:

Dr. Regina Rigatto Witt is an Associate Professor at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, School of Nursing in Brazil. She has coordinated the Project on Health Legacy Planning in the host city of Porto Alegre for the 2014 World Cup and was a Visiting Scholar at Flinders University and the WHO Collaborating Center for Mass Gatherings and High Consequence/High Visibility Events.
