Balinese celebrations – Cultural events and their meaning

Galungan Day
Galungan

Galungan is a Balinese holiday marking the time when the Balinese’s ancestral spirits return to earth for a period of time. A series of religious ceremonies will take place at major temples as well as family temples on the island when relatives conduct prayers and offerings.
The most obvious sign of the Galungan celebrations are the penjor - bamboo poles installed alongside the roads with offerings suspended at the end.
Many ceremonies will taking place hence it’s a wonderful time to explore Bali and experiencing the local culture.

Yuni
Yuni - Bartendress

When you visit Kelapa or Sunken Pool Bar you will occasionally meet her behind the pool bar counter.
Yuni is originally from Gianyar regency and has been in the team for 15 years. Though she looks quiet but she loves interacting with guest while mixing the drink.

She often requested by the guest to teach them speak in Bahasa Indonesia or Bali especially the daily conversation and funny quotes like ‘Apa kabar’ means How are you, ‘Selamat pagi’ means Good morning, ‘Sing ngelah pis’ means Have no money etc, these always helps her enliven the conversation. You may try one of her creation of a cocktail called ‘Yuni Colada’.
During free time she prefers to spend her time with the family or just stay within the home compound and cleaning the house.

Tips of the month
Serangan Temple
Sakenan temple

Visiting any Balinese temple during a temple celebration of festival would be an amazing one.
If you are  in Bali on 15 April 2017 and love to explore the Balinese culture, we would suggest Pura Sakenan for you to visit.
This temple was built in the 16th Century, located on Serangan island (Turtle island) around 20 minutes from Kuta. You do not need a boat to cross the island as it has been connected to Bali by a permanent bridge, so it can be easily accessed by all type of vehicle.
The Sakenan Temple Festival executed every 6 month that is on Saturday, 15 April 2017 at the same time as the celebration of big holiday for Balinese Hindu which is called Hari Raya Kuningan. The Hindu people come to this place for worship to the god and they are coming from various areas. Tourists can also enter the temple as long as they are wearing a sarong and sash. You will also find many local food and drink sellers outside the temple during the ceremony, besides a beautiful panorama and peaceful atmosphere of the Serangan Beach which is known as one of the fascinating surf spot in Bali.
