Scottish Apprenticeship Week
6th March - 10th March 2017

As part of the Scottish Apprenticeship Week, DYW West worked with our partners to coordinate events for local young people to learn more about apprenticeships in a number of sectors across our region. Across the course of the week, over 1000 young people participated and learned more about career opportunities within the following organisations and industries;

6th March; Ferguson Marine Apprenticeship Event in Inverclyde

7th March; NHS Apprenticeship Event in Inverclyde and West Dunbartonshire

Site Tours from Renfrewshire Council and West College Scotland for the Young Women Into Construction and Engineering participants

8th March; NHS Apprenticeship Event for Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire

Site Tours from NHS, Rolls Royce, Ashleigh Construction and British Airways for the Renfrewshire Young Women Into Construction and Engineering participants

9th March; Renfrewshire Hospitality Takeover Day with Springboard, in partnership with Renfrewshire Council and West College Scotland

10th March; Visit to GTG Training Apprenticeship Open Day with West College Scotland students and pupils from Inverclyde Academy, St Stephen's High School and Notre Dame High School

The site tours mentioned above were delivered as part of International Woman’s Day and allowed nearly 100 young women the chance to gain behind the scenes access to local organisations across Renfrewshire.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who was involved in the coordination of these events and to the organisations for giving their time to inspire the next generation!
Gleniffer High School; Planning for Choices and Changes

On the 16th of February, all S3 pupils from Gleniffer High School took part in the annual Planning for Choices and Changes Day held by the school. The event aims to raise awareness and understanding of career opportunities whilst also developing transferable skills across the world of work through interactive team activities.

Employers across a range of industries supported the teams during their activities, with the event concluding with a careers information event where pupils had the opportunity to learn more about the world of work. We would like to congratulate Gleniffer High School for organising this fantastic event and thank you to the employers who supported on the day!
East Renfrewshire Council; Widening Horizons for Young Women

East Renfrewshire Council recently organised an insightful event for young females from local secondary schools to raise awareness of opportunities across STEM related industries; including construction; property and engineering.

The participants on the day were able to network with local employers through a careers information event, participate in a group activity with mentorship from women working in the industry and test virtual reality software used to demonstrate plans to clients!

The event was a tremendous success in raising awareness of career opportunities across a number of industries and inspiring young women in East Renfrewshire!
We are delighted to introduce our new team member, Gary Murray, who joins us from Street League and will be working across West Dunbartonshire and East Renfrewshire!

If you would like to get in touch with Gary, please call 07710 715536 or email gary.murray@dywwest.co.uk
Inverclyde Taste the Industry

On the 21st of February 2017 Tennent’s Training Academy, Tree of Knowledge and Inverclyde Council coordinated employers from across the Hospitality Industry to the St Stephens and Port Glasgow High Schools joint campus, to give the students a real taste of the industry.

Employers such as Kained Holdings, Rosset Butlers, Tennent’s Training Academy, Tree of Knowledge led workshops and activities to promote careers within hospitality. The young people got the chance to cook chicken tacos, prepare chocolate fondant and even tried their hand at mocktail making!

At the beginning of the day, all of the young people were asked how many of them would consider a career in hospitality and then were asked the same question at the end of the day. The amount of people who said they would consider a career in hospitality increased significantly after they had participated in the workshops!
West Dunbartonshire Working4Business Awards 2017

The inaugural Working4Business Awards 2017 are open for applications from businesses who operate within West Dunbartonshire. The awards are free to enter and applicants can enter themselves across as many of the nine categories as they would like.

Applications close on Friday 31st of March at 5pm!
Young Enterprise Regional Finals

The Young Enterprise Company Programme participants have been working hard to prepare for the upcoming regional finals. On the 15th and 16th of March, pupils from the Dunbartonshire and Renfrewshire regional groups respectively competed an interview and group presentation to a panel of judges.

Combining the results on the night with the results from their submitted business plan, regional winners were selected to progress on to the Young Enterprise Scottish Finals!

Well done to all of the participating companies and congratulations to Survival Print from Dumbarton Academy and MDF - Making Design Fun from St Columba's High School who will be progressing to the Scottish Finals on the 6th of June!
Success of Finance IAB

We would like to take the opportunity to thank those who attended the Finance Industry Advisory Board on the 1st of March, held by West College Scotland and DYW West. The event provided the opportunity for local financial organisations to gain insight into how the college is preparing young people for the world of work. We look forward to working in partnership with you and West College Scotland over the coming months.
