Welcome, Spring!
The Makery March 2017 Newsletter
Here at The Makery, these warmer days have us dreaming of summer, and of all the lovely things we can do on those hot summer days!  Paper making and working with paper pulp, tatting a lacy summer anklet, suminagashi (Japanese water marbling), weaving on a backstrap loom under the shade of the trees in the back courtyard...  So we're in the midst of planning a whole new schedule of workshops for the summer!  Watch for it to come out in early April.

In the meantime, let's talk about some of the other exciting things happening now at The Makery.  Here's what you'll find in this month's The Makery News:

March is National Craft Month!

Did you know that creating beautiful things with your hands is good for your mind and your body, as well as your soul?  This might be something you've experienced in your own life, but now it's backed up by science.  The results of multiple studies* conducted recently confirm the many benefits of engaging in craft, including:
  • Increasing calm and reducing stress.  Specifically, making things with your hands has been shown to help people cope with particularly stressful situations!
  • Increasing positive mood.
  • Lowering the risk of mild cognitive impairment by protecting the brain's neural pathways.
  • Empowering people with eating disorders, anxiety, depression, and chronic pain.
Interestingly enough, one study also shows that crafting in a group increases happiness and self-esteem.  So come on down and join us in a workshop at The Makery--it's good for you!  ;)

To celebrate National Craft Month, we are offering a 10% discount for all online workshop registrations between now and the end of March.  To take advantage of this discount, simply register for your workshop online at our workshop page and use the discount code NACRAMO17 during checkout, before the end of the day on March 31.

Humans of the female variety, join us on April 14 for
Girls' Night Out!

We've finally planned our first Girls' Night Out!  These nights are intended to be a fun and easy mini-getaway--a great chance to get together with old friends, meet new ones, make something cute and carefree (in other words, no serious learning involved, and we'll do any necessary hard work for you ahead of time!), and just have an enjoyable night out at The Makery.

We'll provide everything you need to complete and take home one awesome project, as well as some yummy snacks.  So bring yourself or grab a friend (or many!) and let loose by joining us for this totally fun, totally creative evening.

This time around, we'll be painting and decorating our own heavy-duty canvas tote bags with some fun techniques (see picture above). Refreshments will be apps + chocolate-covered strawberries. Yum!

Registration Fee is $15 for one person, or bring a friend and register two people for $25. (You'd pay 30 to 40 bucks for a bag like this on Etsy!!) This first Girls' Night out will be April 14, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. here at The Makery.

To help us plan, please register ahead of time (at least 24 hours in advance).  You can register online at www.makerysvc.com, or as always, you can contact us anytime by emailing wendi@makerysvc.com, calling 575-590-1263, or stopping by The Makery at 108 West Yankie in historic downtown Silver City.  We are open Thursday through Monday, from 11 am to 4 pm.  Or visit our website at www.makerysvc.com.

Guys feeling left out?  Some things just for you are in the works, as well!
Featured Workshops for April:

French Link Bookbinding

Needle Tatting Basics

Join us for these fun new workshops coming up in April!

Bookbinding:  French Link Stitch

Learn to make your own hard cover book with this highly decorative stitch.  French link is another stitch that allows the book to lie completely flat, which makes an excellent surface for writing or drawing.  In this workshop, we’ll use upcycled old book covers or plywood to create a hard cover book with leather or fabric hinges on the spine.  All bookbinding tools and material will be provided for your use in the workshop.

Saturday, April 8 – 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
$25 + $10 materials

Needle Tatting Basics

Tatting is one of many traditional ways to make lace, and can be used to make beautiful lace jewelry, ornaments, pillow edgings, and more.  Needle tatting uses the same ideas as the more traditional shuttle tatting, and basically follows the same patterns, but makes the whole process a bit easier.  Come learn the basic stitches and styles of needle tatting, as well as how to read patterns and choose the right needle and thread for your project.  All tools and materials will be provided for your use during the workshop.

Needle tatting is a really cool way to make unique jewelry, including anklets, bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and even barefoot sandals.  In our Summer session, we'll offer a Needle Tatted Anklet workshop, which will require a basic understanding of needle tatting.  Consider this workshop a prerequisite for that one!

Mondays, April 3 & 10 – 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
(2-session course)
$35 + $5 materials

As always, register for these or any of our workshops online at www.makerysvc.com, or by emailing us at wendi@makerysvc.com , calling us at 575-590-1263, or stopping by the studio at 108 W. Yankie during our open hours.
New! Open Bookbinding Studio

Have you take a bookbinding workshop, then never made a book again because you don't have the tools you need?  Then we have just the thing for you!

We are now offering a weekly Open Bookbinding Studio on Monday nights between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.  Here you will be able to use any of our bookbinding tools, and someone will be here to offer advice and assistance, as well.  The cost will be $10 for up to the full two hours (come as little or as long as you want within that two-hour time period).  We'll also have supply kits (cover material, paper, binding thread) available if you'd like to use those materials to make your book, or you can bring your own.

Please note that this will not be a time for basic bookbinding instruction--it is meant for people who have completed a bookbinding workshop at The Makery, or who can otherwise demonstrate basic competence in bookbinding.

There is no need to pre-register, but if you think you will come to Open Bookbinding Studio but will not be able to be there right at 6:00 p.m., please call, text, or email me to let us know you are coming.

We will also soon have bookbinding kits for sale, that will provide all of the basic tools you need to make books on your own!
Use Our Tools!

In our continuing quest to make art/craft accessible to as many people as possible, we now have a couple of different options for you to use The Makery's resources.
  • We now have tools available to rent, both in-studio and to take home (depending on the tool).  These include inkle looms, our drum carder, fiber combs, kumihimo marudai, bobbin lace pillows and bobbins, peg looms, rigid heddle looms, and spinning wheels.  Come in or contact us for more information.

  • Remember that we will also soon have kits for sale, including kumihimo kits (one currently in stock), drop spindle kits, needle tatting kits, bookbinding kits, backstrap weaving kits, and knitting spool kits.

  • We round out our offerings (and tool availability!) with our thrice-weekly Walk In & Weave, our monthly Gelli Plate Play Dates for Grown-Ups, and our weekly Open Bookbinding Studio.
Added & Re-scheduled Workshops:
  • Added!  We've added a new section of our Coptic Stitch Bookbinding workshop, with the first meeting on Friday, March 24 (from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.), and the second meeting on Friday, March 31 (from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.--note the different meeting times; both meetings are a required part of the workshop.)  Registration Fee: $50 + $10 for materials.
PLEASE NOTE:  We will not offer Coptic Stitch Bookbinding in the Summer session, so this will be your last opportunity to take it until Fall!

  • Added!  We've added a new section of our Funky Hat Class on Sunday, March 26, from 1 p.m to 4 p.m.  Registration Fee:  $35 + $ for materials.  (This will be your last opportunity to take this workshop on a weekend for a while!)

  • Rescheduled!  Due to the change in date for the Tour of the Gila, and the difficulty in getting to the studio during the Saturday Downtown Criterion, we are rescheduling both of our workshops for that day to the following Saturday.  So, our Hot Glue Batik Scarf workshop will now meet on Saturday, April 29 (same time, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.), and our Kids' Kumihimo Braiding Class will meet on Saturday, April 29 (same time, 10 a.m. to Noon).

Last Chance (for a while...)!

We will not offer our Long Stitch Bookbinding workshop in the Summer session, so your last chance to take it until Fall will be our workshop on Monday, April 17, from Noon to 3 p.m.
That's it for now.  Remember, be on the lookout for our new Summer workshop schedule coming out soon.  If you have any suggestions for new workshops, let us know!

Thank you for your support of The Makery.  We are excited about all the fun things coming up soon.  Stop by for a visit and chat with us about it!
