New program
ARTISTIC LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT RESIDENCIES
WHY
  • A new leadership model is required for a quickly changing sector;
  • Leading an artistic organization is more complex and challenging than ever and requires a profound understanding of the communities that will be served;
  • Over the past several years, major Canadian cultural institutions have been hiring non-Canadians to lead them;
  • This is a rare moment of generational transition in leadership positions as the “baby-boomer” generation of founders begins to retire;
  • There has been a historical lack of leadership development opportunities that has led to there being no pipeline for Artistic Directors;
  • There are no artistic leadership development programs in the country to prepare our next generation leaders.
 WHAT
  • A gold-standard training program that develops the next generation of Artistic Directors for theatre organizations;
  • It is co-developed with the Banff Centre for Arts & Creativity Cultural Leadership Program where Residents will join the Cultural Leadership program four times over the course of the year;
  • A one-year training program that combines curriculum based teaching and professional placements at theatres and non-culture organizations to prepare emerging leaders to become Artistic Directors;
  • Currently includes two residencies, eventual goal is for four to six;
  • Nationally recognised by the artistic community and Boards of Directors and builds a talent pool for the theatrical milieu;
  • As with all National Theatre School of Canada (NTS) training, this program focuses on practice rather than research;
  • This is not a program to train administrative leadership;
  • Curriculum elements include:
    • Business skills;
    • Network management;
    • Entrepreneurial capabilities;
    • Being able to build and share an artistic vision;
    • Understanding the complex cultural environment (new models for audience engagement, new producing models);
    • Civic leadership, the arts organization as a civic institution with a social responsibility, the role of the artist in society;
    • Management of self, articulation of personal and artistic values;
    • Reputation building, developing a network of supporters for the artist to access upon completion of the program.
WHO
  • The program is for artists with 8+/- years of experience who:
  • have some demonstrated leadership experience within an organization or leadership of a small independent organization;
  • are actively pursuing artistic leadership opportunities of increasing scale and complexity;
  • are outspoken and recognised advocate within their respective artistic community;
  • understand the role of artistic leadership as central to the overall health of an organization;
  • believe in the role of cultural organizations as civic institutions that drive community growth, development and wellbeing;
  • are seeking to learn and share their own experiences with the community of NTS.

The first cohort of two will be selected through community consultation. Thereafter, a national call for applications will be issued. Some funding may be tied to specific regions (e.g. Toronto-based artist for a specific foundation’s support).

WHEN
