Celebrate with Us

National Public Health WeekNational Public Health Week is April 3-9

The first week of April is designated as National Public Health Week (NPHW), focusing on the contributions and objectives of public health in the U.S. in particular. Sponsored by the American Public Health Association (APHA), the 2017 goal of NPHW is “making the U.S. the healthiest nation in one generation.” They note the incongruity of one of the wealthiest nations in the world experiencing worse health outcomes in comparison to other high income countries, and vow to address the “underlying causes of poor health and disease risk.” Ways to combat these underlying factors include improving the environment, building safer communities, ensuring school success for all, and providing access to quality health care for all residents.

Here at UAB our School of Public Health is an active participant in observing NPHW. Beginning with the Public Health Research and Practice Day on Tuesday, April 4, through the “Pop Up Presentation and Alumni Mixer” at the Edge of Chaos in Lister Hill Library on the evening of the 5th, and the Lou Wooster Public Health Hero Breakfast on the 6th (honoring Judge Joyce White Vance), the School celebrates the history and progress of public health while remaining attentive to the challenges. In addition to these events, the Alabama Public Health Association will also be hosting its annual meeting at the Hill Student Center April 5-7.

Best wishes for a terrific NPHW 2017, School of Public Health!

Preservation Week is April 23-29

Preservation Week

Wondering where to store your home videos or family photos? Have an old scrapbook that’s seen better days? The Association for Library Collections and Technical Services, a division of the American Library Association, sponsors the annual Preservation Week, which "inspires action to preserve personal, family, and community collections in addition to library, museum, and archive collections. It also raises awareness of the role libraries and other cultural institutions play in providing ongoing preservation education and information." The resources and webinars available from the Preservation Week website include useful information to help address common preservation issues and questions. Also, you can find lists of quick tips on caring for a variety of materials, from books and paper to textiles and slides, on the Saving Your Stuff page. The Preservation Week initiative acknowledges that, “Memories and treasures should last a lifetime and be passed on to future generations.” And the only way to do this is by preserving the books, documents, photographs, artifacts, film, audio recordings and digital files that record our past and present.

Here’s a helpful hint from the Preservation Week website to get you started. Consider the following when deciding where to store your precious items…

“Key environmental factors that place collections at risk:

•         Light: Ultraviolet rays from natural and artificial sources can cause fading and disintegration.
•         Pollutants: Dust is abrasive and can accelerate harmful chemical reactions.
•         Heat: High temperatures can accelerate deterioration.
•         Moisture: High humidity promotes mold growth, corrosion, and degradation, while excessive dryness can cause drying and cracking. Fluctuations between extremes can cause warping, buckling, and flaking.”
