Kind Friends,

May the April fool in us get our hands in the earth this month! Try a couple of minutes every morning barefoot on Mother Earth, breathing, alive. And have you hugged or felt a tree lately? I think they love us to feel them (just my opinion-- it sure feels good to me to touch a tree).

Friends in the community: After ten strong and successful years as Banyen's General Manager, Tanis Phillips is retiring this year. Serving in the heart of Banyen for 17 years, Tanis has stewarded our ragtag band of bookworms, visionaries, and store-gardeners into a coherent working community, month after month, year after year. It's been a time of peace, for me as owner, to know so much has been taken care of so well by the team Tanis has constellated. And these years since the Great Shrinkage started in 2008 have been challenging times for us: bookstores have become an endangered species. Yet Tanis has supported Banyen's ongoing ability-to-serve with fairness, consistency, and kindness-in-business. Not a small thing, and a hard act to follow.

In Tanis's honour, Banyen will be now making a monthly donation to TreeSisters. See TreeSisters moving 5 minute intro video here. TreeSisters aims to help reforest the tropics within ten years by calling forth the unique gifts, generosity and leadership of women everywhere -- a reforestation revolution ignited by the shared creativity & courage of a global network of millions of women. We invite you to consider being a monthly donor to the work of Tree Sisters.

So, with Tanis retiring this spring, Banyen is now seeking a new General Manager / Accountant. Please see the invitation/job posting for this position here and thanks for sharing this with any friends you feel may be interested in this opportunity.

There are an abundance of exciting – and newly added – events this month (see below for a full listing). To highlight two:

1) Alex Grey & Allyson Grey, visionary artists, will be in Vancouver April 27 - 30. They will be offering an art workshop, a book signing (at Banyen), and their main event: a live presentation at the Vogue Theatre on April 28th.
Event details here.

Banyen interviewed Alex & Allyson Grey
this month on the mission of art, how visions come to them, and more! Read our interview here.

                                         ------------------

2) David Whyte, renowned poet-author-philosopher, will lead an intimate & inspiring day of poetry and the insights of poetry on April 29th. The theme will be "Half A Shade Braver". Event details here.

With much appreciation from all of us springing in the Banyen garden,

Kolin Lymworth

"The beginning of love is the will to let those we love be perfectly themselves, the resolution not to twist them to fit our own image. If in loving them we do not love what they are, but only their potential likeness to ourselves, then we do not love them: we only love the reflection of ourselves we find in them.”

I Must Go Into the Earth

When the hand of winter gives up its grip to the sun
and the river's hard ice becomes the tongue to spring
I must go into the earth itself
to know the source from which I came.
Where there is a history of leaves
I lie face down upon the land.
I smell the rich wet earth
Trembling to allow the birth
of what is innocent and green.
My fingers touch the yielding earth
knowing that it contains
All previous births and deaths.
I listen to a cry of whispers
Concerning the awakening earth
In possession of itself.
With a branch between my teeth
I feel the growth of trees
Flowing with life born of ancient death.
I cover myself with earth
So that I may know while still alive
How sweet is the season of my time.
