CEO News - Formula Critical To Success
With almost the first quarter of the year been and gone we now enter another busy period with the Perth Garden Festival looming towards the end of April and next week’s Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show which a number of you are visiting. It has also nearly been a year since I joined NGIWA and although the time has been enjoyable and positive, it is just as important now to reflect on those 12 months and not only note with a tick the achievements but also evaluate those areas which haven’t quite gone to plan.

The recent cancellation of events has left me wondering what are we doing wrong? I am concerned that perhaps we haven’t got the formulas right and in essence events are not a high priority with members. The truth of the matter is our daily lives are becoming increasingly busier with work and family commitments and the thought of attending an event, particularly after work hours, is just too much.   [read more...]
NextGen Aquaponics WA Tour
Wednesday 12th April  10.30am to 12.30pm
295 Warton Rd Canningvale

Aquaponics is the method of combining aquaculture and hydroponics to grow both fish and vegetables in a recirculating environment. With more emphasis being placed on sustainable practices, aquaponics is a great way of producing healthy food with significantly less water usage and without the need for artificial fertilisers.

WA gardening identity, Neville Passmore and partner Delia Van Aurich, welcome our NGIWA NextGenners (18-35 yrs) to tour Aquaponics WA on Wednesday 12th April from 10.30am to 12.30pm.

Come along and see a different aspect of horticulture. Hydroponics and aeroponics are the major food growing systems for high end vegetables in Australia and internationally. These systems can readily be scaled down to home garden sizes. Aquaponics, where edible fish are used to provide nutrient for vegetable, herb and fruit production, is gaining a huge home garden following and bring families to a new way of growing food. Aquaponics WA has a retail store and out the back a demonstration farm showing working models of many different growing systems.

You will also be involved in a special feeding session for the Rock Star Barramundi ….be prepared to be shocked and amazed.

The tour will be followed by a barbeque lunch and refreshments.  This is a FREE event for our NGIWA NextGen group thanks to Aquaponics WA and generous sponsorship provided by our friends at Water Corporation.

Places are STRICTLY limited - so you MUST RSVP by Tuesday 11th April by registering via our website online system - click on the link below.

DAFWA Tomato Potato Psyllid Briefing
With the recent arrival of TPP to Western Australia in February, NGIWA members were invited to attend a briefing session with DAFWA and the Incident Response Management team lead by Dr Kevin Chennel, Executive Director of Biosecurity and Regulation. Around 25 members attended the two hour presentation on the 14th March with representation from both the wholesale and retail segments of the nursery and garden industry.

Dr Darryl Hardie provided details on the world-wide occurrence of TPP in the Solanaceae family and explained the symptoms of psyllid infestations which included severe wilting of plants, yellowing leaf margins, honeydew and the shortening of stem internodes. He also discussed the ability of TPP to carry the bacterium ‘Candidatus Liberibacter Solancearum’.

Shane Bryant, Incident Control Manager and Rohan Prince, Industry Development Officer explained the present quarantined areas within WA and the current protocol for growers moving stock in and out of restricted zones.  John van Schagen, Chief Plant Biosecurity Officer, discussed the long term strategical direction from a national viewpoint, highlighting that it wasn’t so much 'if' it would cross our borders but when and that eradication was not a feasible option.

NGIWA will continue to forward updated information from DAFWA to our members and where possible assist members in areas such as growing and moving plants as well as offering support to the retail segment by providing information they can pass on to their customers.
Pest Could Cost Tens Of Millions Of Dollars

The damage bill from the outbreak of tomato potato psyllid in Western Australia could amount to tens of millions of dollars, according to Matthew Lunn, NGIWA CEO.

The WA Department of Agriculture and Food have confirmed the tomato potato psyllid has been found in 35 properties across the Perth metropolitan area including 15 commercial horticulture properties. Vegetables WA reported on its website that the potentially damaging exotic pest had been found in seedlings at three retail outlets  [read more...]

Garden Releaf Day - Zanthorrea Nursery

Garden Releaf is a national event organised by Garden Centres Association of Australia and it celebrates the start of the gardening season. This year in WA we couldn't have been blessed with a better day to start it off, we had the perfect weather to get out into the garden. People who came along to Zanthorrea enjoyed home made cakes by the team, a sausage sizzle, live music from the Black Chooks and inspirational talks by Sabrina Hahn and Leesa Hart on the healing powers the garden has on us. For the kids there was a treasure hunt in our display gardens, face painting and colouring in. Overall there was a fantastic positive buzz in the air, everyone was out and about enjoying plants and gardening and together we raised $2596.40 for beyondblue.
