President's Message

Hello members, It seems Spring is well on its way. time to start requesting your vacations days, show season is almost here! (or is, if you went to Scottsdale!)

Show books are in the final review stages. It won't be long before we are showing and riding together. It is time for tack sales, clinics and the Midwest Horse Fair!

I want to take a moment to thank our members and directors who are working hard to support our programs and shows. This year WAHA has added a spring open Show, re-launched the youth achievement awards, and  your directors have many more goals.

Please get in touch with us to volunteer or sponsor shows and events. We need your support - volunteer for a day, join a committee, sponsor a class or scholarship, donate prizes, and come to our events.

Please join your directors at meetings or e-mail us to share your ideas, feedback and newsletter content.  I would love to here from you!

WAHA to host a spring, All-Breed Open Show April 1st at Showtime Arena in Deerfield WI

Open and All breed classes will be held alongside Arabian/Half-Arabian classes. English, Western, Walk-trot, Showmanship/Equitation and some "Fun" classes will be offered. WAHA youth will provide a food stand to raise money for WAHA youth programs. Stay tuned for updates!

 Jennifer Baker Wilson of Zenith Farms, and the breeder of Maghnus Z+//, who is now the winningest Half-Arabian ever, is donating A book set for WAHA's April Open Show! She has created these amazing books about her twin foals that she bred and raised, and also coloring books starring the twins. And she just released a show record/scrap book which is awesome for everyone showing this year! Someone will be very lucky to win one of these amazing books at our show. And for those who don't win one, please check out the link and her post about the books to get your own!

Region 10 Arabians Return to the Midwest Horse Fair
April 21-23
The 2017 Arabian demonstration, coordinated by Vikki Dalton of WHDA, features many WAHA members. Each year we rely on volunteers to share their love of the breed with the public. If you are interested, please contact Vikki (greyhawk323@hotmail.com) to volunteer. No experience required - only a love for Arabians! We can teach you the rest.

This month the Region 10 board voted to appoint Emmy Farago as Region 10 Youth Director, and Katie Treadwell as Vice Director beginning in July.

Region 10 Director Chuck Rickart and the board thanks current Region 10 Youth Director Hunter Offord for her years of service to the Arabian breed and and dedication in cultivating Region 10's youth program. Hunter's term ends in June and later this year she will be heading to the University of Wisconsin, River Falls for college.

Perfecting Oral Reasons

Region 10 Youth had about 115 people at the "Perfecting Oral Reasons" clinic Saturday Westridge Farms—what a turnout! Thanks to all those who attended, our speakers Amanda Solie, Molly Schwister, and Kate Carlson, and Jenna Marie Ball and Val Sylla for hosting.

Sport Horse Returns to The Badger Classic

A Selection of Sport Horse In Hand, and  Sport Horse Undersaddle will be offered at the WAHA/WDHA Badger classic.

Please continue to cross enter to this growing division.

We are looking for Volunteers (scribes, runners, gate) and of course class sponsorship.

WAHA August Show Update:

Looking ahead to the end of Summer is the WAHA August Show. The show will be held at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds August 4-6. This show will continue to be a family friendly show with glasses for all. Amateur and beginner classes available for those just starting out or returning to the ring after an absence. Our popular Midwest halter class will be held at the show also. This class offers a beginner to show an Arabian or half Arabian in a special halter class just for them. Fun classes will be held along with the popular dog race.


Want to be involved?  We are looking for gate/ ribbon  volunteers. You can do an hour or a whole day. Please consider volunteering!

We also need volunteers for the sport horse/dressage part of the show .Please contact Debbie Alt if you can volunteer @ dalt5940@yahoo.com

WAHA Board of Directors Meeting Minutes
January 16, 2017

Members present: Nancy Miller, Lerin Hendrickson, Kathy Platta, Nyssa Sheridan, Tim Schaap, 
Madeline Erce, and Jeana Radosevich. Members excused: Juli Goder-Larson, Gay Jeanne Bower, 
Heidi Ness, Deb Alt, Deb Duick, Cheryl Bumgarner, and Carly Smith. Meeting called to order at 7:23 pm.

Executive/Committee

I. New Member List-One new member reviewed. Motion to approve by Lerin Hendrickson, 
second by Kathy Platta. Motion passes.

II. Minutes-Minutes from December reviewed. Motion made to approve minutes by Tim Schaap, 
second from Jeana Radosevich. Motion passes.

III. Treasurer's Report-Deb Duick provided budget and treasurer's report via email prior to 
meeting and is available over the phone.

-Tim Schaap asked why the club insurance in budget was higher than 2015, extra 
insurance was purchased for the clinic. Also, questions over why no totals for member 
administration, which Deb Duick will look into.

-Lerin Hendrickson will project lower profit for open show to cover fee for judge, if 
necessary.

-Proposal to add money to budget for a spring open show. Lerin Hendrickson will get 
more info on cost.

-Midwest Horse Fair money will be removed from budget, will be handled by WDHA. 
Volunteers needed to be liaison.

-Motion made to approve treasurer's report by Tim Schaap, seconded by Madeline Erce. 
Motion passes by unanimous vote.

IV. Awards-

1. Ambassador Award-Carly Smith nominated her horse, Fad Hakeem. Board approves. 
2. Trapp Award-Heidi Ness has two potential candidates for Award for outstanding youth, 
Hunter Offord and Emily Kaldenberg. Will need board approval for two recipients, as 
there is a cash prize. Nyssa Sheridan makes a motion later in the meeting for two 
awards, second from Tim Schaap. Motion passes by unanimous vote.

3. Dick Hoeft Award-To be presented at the August show. The Hoeft girls have selected 
a recipient.

Annual Meeting

I. Participation/Agenda-Madeline Erce and Tim Schaap both have potential new members 
attending.

-Joan Rose has the youth awards.

2. Elections/Nominating Committee-Three full terms up for election, one two-year, the 
delegates and the officers. Bios from some candidates still needed. Juli Goder-Larson 
and Heidi Ness may send out questionnaires which Heidi can rewrite into a bio. 
-Board-Potential new board members are Sydney Arnold, Karissa Held, Julie McKee,

Jamie Buedler, and Jessica Stachulek. 
-Officers-Lerin Hendrickson is running for president. Madeline Erce would like to run for 
vice president. Jeana Radosevich is seeking reelection for secretary, and Deb Duick is 
seeking reelection as treasurer.

-Delegates-New rules regarding membership numbers give WAHA six delegates. 
President and Vice President can be delegates. Other candidates are Juli 
Goder-Larson, Kevin Price, Nancy Miller, Joan Rose, and Mary Jo Meier. 
3. Other-Discussion regarding who will help with set up and tearing down, as well as who can 
bring what.

Other

I. Open Show-Carly Smith sent Lerin Hendrickson information regarding potential facilities for 
spring open show. Bounds appears to be the best option. Could also have Rachel Meek 
as show manager. Her fee is reasonable and has a crew, so the show would require less 
volunteers. Board agrees it would be worth trying.

-Lerin Hendrickson makes motion to hold a spring open show with Rachel Meek as show 
manager at Bounds. Tim Schaap seconds, motion passes with Deb Alt voting via phone 
call, in order to have a quorum.

II. Adjournment-Motion made to adjourn by Tim Schaap, seconded by Kathy Platta. Meeting 
adjourned at 8:06.
2017 Wisconsin Arabian Horse Association Annual Meeting
January 21, 2017
Welcome by Nancy Miller. Dates for Region 10 Championship Show and Region 10 Sport Horse and
Dressage Show announced.
Budget
- Treasurer Deb Duick reviews budget for attendees.
I. Midwest Horse Fair
-Horse Fair is no longer in WAHA's budget, it will be handled by the
Wisconsin Desert Horse Association this year. The club needs volunteers to act as
liaison to WDHA.
II. Spring Open Show
-A second open show has been added to the budget. Might not make
profit this year.
III. Youth-
An increase was added to the budget for a second Trapp award.
-Joan Rose reports the Youth Round-Up was cancelled due to a scheduling conflict. A
request is made to still use $300 in budget for Youth Round-Up as a donation to the
youth. Gay Jeanne Bower makes a motion to do so. Seconded by Julie McKee. Motion
passes.
IV. Approval-
Motion to approve budget made by Mary Jo Meier, second from Gay Jeanne Bower.
Motion passes by unanimous vote.
Resolutions-
Kevin Price reports.
I. Shoeing-
Four changes were made to the shoeing rules.
1. Foot length no longer measured to coronary band, now to hairline.
2. Added a quarter inch to allowed foot length. 4 3/4" for purebreds, 5 1/4" for half-Arabs.
3. Bar needs to be straight, can be anywhere in shoe. (Excludes egg-bar)
4. No bars on junior horses.
5. Also new rules allow further methods to enforce shoeing rules.
II. Convention Overview-
Overall well attended. Kevin Price feels trainers were well
represented.
-Nancy Miller reports new rule regarding club membership numbers gives WAHA six
delegates (35:1).
Horse Protection Act-
Joan Rose reports. Ended up being restricted to only Tennessee Walkers.
Juli Goder-Larson reports strong write-in campaigns from other breeds were successful.
Membership expresses some concern over possible discrimination suits.
Elections
1. Officers-
Lerin Hendrickson nominated for president. No nominations from floor for president.
Lerin Hendrickson elected president.
-Tim Schaap nominated for vice-president. Madeline Erce is nominated for vice-president from
floor. Membership votes after hearing candidates speak. Votes are totaled while board
candidates speak. Results needed prior to election of delegates. Madeline Erce is elected
vice-president.
-Jeana Radosevich seeks reelection for secretary. No nominations from floor. Jeana
Radosevich reelected secretary.
-Deb Duick seeks reelection for treasurer. No nominations from floor. Deb Duick reelected
treasurer.
2. Board of Directors-
Six positions are up for election. Four full terms, one two-year term and
one one-year term. Voters will vote for six people out of seven nominees.
-No nominations from floor. Nominees are Cheryl Bumgarner and Gay Jeanne Bower for
reelection, Julie McKee, Karissa Held, Sydney Arnold, Jamie Buedler, and Jessica Stachlulek
as possible new directors. Candidates for board speak. Nyssa Sheridan speaks on behalf of

Jessica Stachlulek. Votes totaled during awards presentation. Three year terms-Sydney Arnold,
Jamie Buedler, Karissa Held, and Cheryl Bumgarner. Two year-Julie McKee. One year-Gay
Jeanne Bower.
3. Delegates-
President and vice-president have automatic positions, which are accepted by Lerin
and Madeline. Other candidates are Juli Goder-Larson, Nancy Miller, Mary Jo Meier, Kevin Price,
Joan Rose, and Deb Duick. Candidates for delegate speak. Juli Goder-Larson, Nancy Miller,
Kevin Price, and Deb Duick are selected as delegates, Mary Jo Meier and Joan Rose are
alternates.
Awards Presentation
I. Point System-
Gay Jeanne Bower and Debbie Alt update membership on new trail riding
division and WAHA's ownership of bronze design. Prizes changed from plaques to director's
chairs.
-Awards given out for point system.
II. Ambassador Award-
Ambassador Award presented to Fad Hakeem and owner Carly Smith.
III. Trapp Award-
Two Trapp awards are presented, to Hunter Offord and Emily Kaldenberg.
IV. Youth Team Tournament-
Reported by Joan Rose. Region 10 very well represented. Awards
will be presented at Region 10 show.
Youth
1. Youth Round-Up-
Joan Rose reports. Round-Up was cancelled due to scheduling conflict.
Other venues were pursued, but did not work out.
-Will still request donations for youth from those who typically sponsor the round-up. The show
will be back next year.
2. Youth Officers-
Report from youth meeting. Officers: Emily Kaldenberg-president, Lindsey
Held-vice-president, Lindsey Samuelson-secretary, Mai Ling Ness-treasurer, and Zhu Lan
Ness-reporter.
Adjournment-
Motion to adjourn made by Julie McKee, seconded by Gay Jeanne Bower. Meeting
adjourned at 9:15 pm.
WAHA Board of Directors Meeting Minutes
February 1, 2017

Members present-Cheryl Bumgarner, Deb Alt, Deb Duick, Sydney Arnold, Karissa Held, Gay Jeanne 
Bower, Julie McKee, Nyssa Sheridan, Lerin Hendrickson, Madeline Erce, Tim Schaap, Heidi Ness, and 
Jeana Radosevich. Guest-Juli Goder-Larson. Members excused-Nancy Miller, Carly Smith, Jamie 
Buedler, and Mary Jo Meier. Meeting called to order at 7:33 pm.

Executive/Reports

I. Introductions-Members introduce themselves and give a brief background. 
II. New Members-Report received during the meeting, board has no concerns. 
III. January Minutes-Minutes from January Board of Directors meeting reviewed. Motion to 
approve made by Gay Jeanne Bower, second from Deb Alt. Motion passes.
 IV. Annual Meeting/Awards Banquet-Board discusses overall success of combining the two 
events. Board agrees the move was very successful. The combined event saved money, 
gained new interest in the point system, and awards distribution filled in time while votes were 
counted. Minutes from annual meeting reviewed. Motion to approve from Gay Jeanne Bower, 
second by Cheryl Bumgarner. Motion passes.

V. Treasurer's Report-Deb Duick reports. AHA dues checks have been deposited. Some items 
from annual meeting paid. 
-Question from Juli Goder-Larson regarding whether lifetime members need to pay yearly club 
affiliation due. Deb Duick will create invoice.

Club Events/Committees

I. Youth-Heidi Ness reports. Team tournament members have been submitted. Submissions 
now need to be in by February 1, formerly May 1. Fifteen members this year. 
-Working on schedule, four events planned through April. The youth volunteered to assist with 
the Midwest Horse Fair youth judging contest, hope to improve organization. 
II. Midwest Horse Fair-Handling of the event has been given to Wisconsin Desert Horse 
Association. Juli Goder-Larson has been copied in the emails and it appears to be going well.
. WAHA needs a liaison to WDHA, as well as volunteers for the booth. Julie McKee
volunteers to be liaison.
2. WDHA has requested some of the props WAHA has provided in the past. President 
Lerin Hendrickson approves loaning them to WDHA.
3. WDHA will need to cover insurance, which Gay Jeanne Bower will make sure they're
aware of.
4. Further discussion regarding some of the topics to be addressed through the liaison.

III. Judges-Board of Directors' votes need to be received by Nancy Miller by February 3. Deb
McGuire will judge the August show.

Shows

I. Spring Open Show-Will be held Sunday April 2 at Bounds. Rachel Meek hired to run office.
1. Karissa Held, Sydney Arnold, and Madeline Erce will also be on the committee.
2. Heidi Ness will see if youth are available to run food stand.
3. Volunteers needed as always.
4. Joanne Ace will judge for free.
5. Carly Smith is working on schedule, will have additional fun classes. Will try to keep it
shorter, as it is a Sunday.

II. Badger-Waiting on judge, everything else is ready to go.

1. Need volunteers, for Saturday and Sunday in particular. Also, board members donate
random prizes.
2. Exhibitor party is moved to later in the day.
3. Vicki Dalton will be gate secretary, Julie McKee volunteers as ring secretary.
4. Insurance-Gay Jeanne Bower reports club saved insurance money by combining
awards banquet and annual meeting, as well as no longer needing coverage for Horse 
Fair.

i. Need to submit all dates for WAHA events in March. A new application is needed
every year.

ii. Motion made by Julie McKee to include coverage for a possible group trail ride,
seconded by Gay Jeanne Bower. Motion passes by unanimous vote.

III. August Show-Deb Alt reports. Would like additional control over class list.
-Discussion amid board regarding rated classes versus non-qualifying classes. WAHA
was charged a fee by USEF for the ACT classes. Only charged at August show. Deb
Duick will use money for the fee from the ACT fund. Gay Jeanne Bower will inquire
further why the club was charged.
-Some board members feel the rated classes do more to pay for the show, others feel the
fun classes are part of the show's identity. Deb Alt makes a motion to keep the fun
classes, seconded by Julie McKee. Motion passes.
-Gay Jeanne Bower has contracts with Ryan Chambers for both shows.

IV. Fall Open show-Will likely be Spetember 23. Needs volunteers.

Other

I. Versatility Award-Award created and funded by Madeline Erce. Will be given as a high point
award to exhibitor that shows in a sport horse class, a pleasure class, and an equitation class.
Board agrees the award is a good idea and would be a good fit at the August show.
II. Clinics-No clinics are planned for 2017, the spring open show taking the place of a clinic. Tim
Schaap feels a committee should be formed now for any potential 2018 clinics. Deb Alt
volunteers to head committee.
III. Media-No updates. Lerin Hendrickson would like to have committee reports on website. Tim
Schaap feels there should be more documentation from committees to prevent
miscommunication.
IV. Youth Achievement Award-Nyssa Sheridan questions whether or not the program still exists.
Nyssa Sheridan would be willing to take over. Nyssa will create a proposal to restart program.
The award is similar to the point system, but geared towards open shows.
V. 2018 shows-Discussion over potential other venues/dates for 2018 shows. Julie McKee
makes a motion to do further research, seconded by Tim Schaap. Motion passes.
VI. Adjournment-Motion to adjourn from Deb Duick, seconded by Cheryl Bumgarner. Meeting
adjourned at 9:36 pm.
