SEAsonal SEEchange:  Every month since April 2015 a box of seasonal seafood is put up for auction at SAFCOL.  The product is a donated “box of fish/seafood” provided by an Industry group or Business to profile their seasonal product and Fishery.  The money raised from these auctions are donated to Variety through Car 58.

Total raised to date is as follows:
2014/2015  $2,248
2015/2016  $6,618
2016/2017  $3,074 (5 auctions to come)

Auctions are held on the last Wednesday of every month at SAFCOL Fish Market.

National peak body:  Seafood Industry Australia  The process to establish Seafood Industry Australia (SIA) is on track and the inaugural board of directors for SIA have been selected.  As promised in the Prospectus, the selection was for a strategic board (rather than a representative group) who bring a mix of skills and experience to help make a SIA a success and create value for seafood businesses.

The inaugural directors will hit the ground running and plan to meet face to face next week to:
  • Select a Chair
  • Confirm SIA implementation plans, consistent with the intent of the Prospectus
  • Consider the approach and timing for the inaugural SIA members policy forum
  • Ensure that pledged members receive an invoice shortly, so that payments fall within the current financial year.
The selection of the inaugural directors means we can now accelerate the process to make SIA a reality by 1 July 2017.

Fishers on Film:  Wildcatch Fisheries SA in conjunction with UniSA worked on a project called 'Fishers on Film'.  The aim of this project was to share the amazing and awesome stories of fishermen across South Australia through a series of short films.  Eating sustainable seafood is becoming an important part of people’s lives, therefore it’s time to get to know their seafood from ocean to plate.

This project showcases the amazing South Australian produce and shows consumers exactly how some of their favourite species make it onto their plates. The films capture inspirational and educational stories of fishing in South Australia which are real and relevant - here is what we created...

Film 1, Bart Butson (Port Wakefield, SA)
Film 2, Karen Holder (Adelaide, SA)
Film 3, Gary Hera-Singh (Meningie, SA)

The FRDC will use a new on-line system for judging the fish and chip category for both the state, territory (jurisdictions) and national seafood industry awards.
