This year we will offer Council attendees and friends participating from afar with the opportunity to name a day, week, or month at the Israel Museum in honor of loved ones’ birthdays, anniversaries, bar/bat mitzvahs, graduation, or any other occasions. We will let your honorees know that their special day is being recognized at the Israel Museum.

Seeing the Sounds is part of an initiative funded by the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs in cooperation with the Dresden State Museums to embrace Europe through four hundred years of classical music at universal museum settings to the East and West – the Israel Museum, Jerusalem in spring and the British Museum, London in fall. Each month-long series of solo, chamber music, and orchestral concerts will explore the theme of materiality and metaphor.

From the 21 rue La Boétie exhibition at the Maillol Museum in Paris

Paris, France – On May 18, our French Friends will host a visit to the 21 rue La Boétie exhibition at the Maillol Museum with author Anne Sinclair. Inspired by Sinclair's 2012 book My Grandfather's Gallery, this exhibition of 60 major 20th century works featuring artists such as Picasso, Braque, and Matisse revives the gallery of her grandfather Paul Rosenberg. A renowned gallery owner who collected at the height of the artistic revolutions of the interwar period, Rosenberg was one of the most influential art merchants of the first half of the 20th century.

Lifecuts: Prints and Woodblocks by Moshe Hoffman – A selection of prints by Israeli woodcut artist displayed alongside original blocks—a recent addition to the Prints and Drawings Dept. collection.
2500 Years of Siguas, Wari, Chancay, and Inca Textiles – These recent additions to the Art of the Americas collection reflect the beauty and range of ancient Andean textile design and function, as well as the splendid weaving traditions used to define status, gender, and wealth.
European Imprint: Jacob Pins and German Expressionism is one of three Jerusalem-based exhibitions marking the centenary of Israeli woodcut artist Jacob Pins. At Ticho House, Pins’ work is displayed alongside those of pioneering German Expressionist artists Emil Nolde and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff.

Rome, Italy – The Israel Museum is a proud contributor to the joint exhibition of the Vatican Museum and the Jewish Museum in Rome on the depiction of the Menorah in Jewish, Catholic, and secular art over the centuries. The exhibition will run from May 15-July 23. Major loans include Poussin’s The Destruction and Sack of the Temple of Jerusalem and important archaeological artifacts. >> In the press

Washington DC, USA - Shlomit Steinberg, our Senior Curator of European Art will participate in a panel discussion on “A Question of Provenance: Holocaust-Era Art, Research, and Restitution” at the Smithsonian Provenance Research Initiative (SPRI) on May 10-11.
Höxter and Hamburg, Germany - Coinciding with the European Imprint: Jacob Pins and German Expressionism exhibition at Ticho House and with Pins' 100th birthday, Curator of Prints and Drawings Ronit Sorek will attend the Forum Jacob Pins in Höxter on May 28. Ronit will give a talk on Depictions of God in Israeli Modern and Contemporary Art at the Institute for Jewish Philosophy and Religion at the University of Hamburg on July 3.
Mexico City, Mexico - Kicking off the 70th year of their discovery, Dead Sea Scrolls Curator and Head of the Shrine of the Book Dr. Adolfo Roitman will become an honorary member of the Academy of Science and Faith at the Pontifical University in Mexico. In honor of this event, Adolfo will give a talk on The Demoniacal Origin of Evil in Ancient Judaism on August 28.

Passover Open House – Over 70 international and local leaders and friends of the Museum visiting Jerusalem joined us for this year's Passover Open House. We were delighted to host our guests and present three fascinating curator-led tours of seminal exhibitions No Place Like Home, Behold the Man: Jesus in Israeli Art, and Francisco Goya: Daydreams and Nightmares.
British Friends – It was a pleasure having the opportunity to present Israel Museum photography installations—Ron Amir: Doing Time in Holot and Ya’akov Shofar: Born in Israel; and the Behold the Man: Jesus in Israeli Art exhibition before they came down to make way for our summer season. We were also pleased that our BFAMI Friends got to see some pre-Passover Youth Wing activity that the British Friends steadfastly support. Many thanks to the Israeli Friends of the Israel Museum (IFIM) who kindly opened their homes to host the BFAMI contingent during their visit to Israel.
Paris Gala – The gorgeous March 2017 Paris Gala drew 200 guests. Friends and artists from France and abroad included the Israel Ambassadress to France Aliza Bin Noun, director of the Centre Pompidou Bernard Blistene, Commissaire Général, Saison France-Israël 2018 Lionel Choukroun, avid contemporary art collector Laurent Dumas, Baron Eric de Rothschild, director of Christian Dior Sylvie Rousseau, Natalie Rykiel, president of Sonia Rykiel, and artist Christian Boltanski. The successful Gala auction included bestselling pieces by Adel Abdessemed, Fabrice Hyber, Friedrich Kunath and Sigalit Landau.

IMJ staff enjoying a day by the sea in Malta

Workers Trips to Malta and Northern Israel – Two groups of IMJ staff participated in study trips to Malta, where they visited archaeological and historical sites and museums, enjoyed stunning views of the islands, and savored delectable Maltese cuisine. Highlights of the trip included touring the small, green, rural island of Gozo, visiting the three historical fishing towns Senglea, Cospicua, and Vittoriosa, and visiting the Miracle Church of Mosta.
Those who chose to stay in Israel took part in a study trip to the Golan Heights, in which they strolled the magical Japanese gardens of Kibbutz Heftziba, hiked the Gilboa, bird-watched at the Agamon Hula Ornithology and Nature Park, and visited picturesque Tsfat.
Amalyah Keshet Retires - After 39 years of service ranging from art handler to early IT services, our dear Amalyah Keshet retired from her most recent IMJ post as Head of Image Resources and Copyright Management. We wish Amalyah much luck in all of her new activities.
