New 1.Question Interview Below: Peg Bradley-Doppes // Athletic Director // Denver
Pittsburgh introduces new AD Lyke. Chancellor Gallagher: "Heather Lyke's track record exemplifies her dedication to student-athletes. She has a passion for success in the classroom, on the playing field and in life after graduation." Acting AD & search committee chair Juhl: "...as we proceeded, Heather's breadth of experience, her achievements at EMU and her fit to the values of the University and our region made the committee's recommendation an easy choice." Lyke: "Pitt has such a storied tradition and great expectations. I am thrilled to be part of Chancellor Gallagher's team. There is a tremendous pride in the Blue and Gold, and we will work extremely hard to make our alumni, donors, community and University even more proud. With all of us working together, I am confident we can build winning teams and a winning culture for Pitt Athletics." (link); SBD/SBJ's Smith & Broughton note 33 DI female ADs with Lyke's hiring, Eight of the last fifty-one AD openings have gone to women (15.86%). Detroit News reporter Paul says Oakland AD Konya could get a "good look" in Lyke's old chair at Eastern Michigan. (link)
Ohio is moving from Russell Athletic to Adidas in an eight-year deal beginning this summer. The Bobcats have been receiving $397K annually from Russell. No specific numbers on the Adidas agreement, but AD Schaus previously commented, "The contract … is an outstanding one for the department. We will be able to maintain the significant quantity of complementary products we have become accustomed to, while staying committed to quality and variety in offering to players, coaches and staff." (link)
Syracuse AD Wildhack provides context on his decision to extend MBB HC Boeheim after AHC Hopkins exited for the top spot at Washington. As you know, Boeheim was scheduled to step away after next season. Wildhack: "I contacted the chancellor and some board members and quickly put my thoughts together. I thought moving quickly with an emphasis on continuity for the program and doing what's best for the program. [...] I believe this is the best outcome." Boeheim: "My immediate thought was 'I want to coach.' […] When this agreement was made with the chancellor and me and Mike Hopkins, I fully knew that next year would be my last year. I never, ever thought anything else. Ever." (link)
Daily Press lead Teel pens on the ACC MBB NCAA Tourney slips, notes the realities of what some teams faced in the second round, like Louisville going up against an incredibly hot Michigan squad & Duke's defenseless campaign. Interestingly, the only other time a league has received eight or more bids in a season - the Big East with 11 in 2011 - also underwhelmed as only two teams made it to the second weekend with a number of notable upset exits. Teel on the financial impact for the ACC, "Yes, each game a team plays in the event is worth about $1.6 million to its conference over a six-year period. So let's be generous and say the ACC had won seven more games in this tournament. That's $11.2 million over six years, pocket change for a league that's likely to generate no less than $2.5 billion over the same period." (link)
Some really good reads in SBJ this week if you can get to them: Wi-fi connectivity at games for fans continues to be at the top of the list for many departments as technology battles concrete. Nebraska Director of IT Floyd also points to significant infrastructure & implementation costs as another barrier. Florida Executive Assoc. AD for External Affairs Hill attracted to the data capture opportunities as the Gators think about an addition at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. Stanford Deputy AD Purpur reflects on being one of the first to install at a FB venue, calls it "one of the most complicated, yet fun projects we've done." More. (link); Behind the scenes live content has become a staple on social media for many athletic departments & March Madness access was no different. Oregon Senior Assoc. AD for Marketing & Public Relations Pintens: "We spend a lot more time worrying about our content on social media than we do on our website. The website has become an archive for information, stats and stories. But for real content, Facebook Live and other social media platforms are where it’s at. It’s instantaneous. The world has changed and we’re looking for that content." (link); Media consultant Berke, who has Oklahoma as a client, on the latest streaming rights deals around sports, "...these are toes in the water. These are baby steps. The steps are only going to get louder. The ground is being prepared for a number of these digital platforms to be making bids for the major properties and for packages as they come up in the early 2020s." (link); SBJ's 2017 Sports Business Awards nominees are out & the final five for 'AD of the Year' include Auburn's Jacobs, Virginia Tech AD Babcock, TCU's Del Conte, Clemson AD Radakovich and UCLA's Guerrero. Lots of other ties to college athletics throughout the categories. Take a look. (link)
There's some concern among Georgia donors regarding whether the university has a cohesive strategic vision as it relates to capital spending, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, which cites several unnamed donors who question whether UGA's expenditures are enough to keep up with its peer and rival institutions in the SEC and beyond. Attorney and former student athletic board member Scates: "There's a lot of frustration with the current administration and the athletic department and their use of capital, that has so enthusiastically been donated. UGA isn't known for being a reactionary, second-rate institution. ... So to see us get outpaced by Clemson and Alabama and Auburn, in terms of (athletics facilities), it's not because we're at a disadvantage because of resources." UGA points out that it has launched three major FB-centered projects since 2010 totaling $121M, including a scheduled $63M renovation to Sanford Stadium for new locker rooms and a recruiting area. More. (link)
Construction: Colorado State's new on-campus FB home is on time & on budget per Rams AD Parker. On time means opening for private events in July & on budget means holding close to the $220M price tag. Parker: "I think it will exceed everyone's expectations. There's just so much that can be communicated in a rendering, so much that you can describe in words." Photo gallery included. (link); Wake Forest is moving dirt on $1.1M worth of enhancements to its Soccer fields as part of an overall $3M upgrade project. "Golf-course quality" surfaces noted as key in the recruiting game. (link); Texas A&M taking the first steps for a new Track & Field venue due to be online by March of 2018. (link)
Pay Perspective: According to the Wall Street Journal, median CEO pay rose 6.8% to $11.5M in FY16. Among the 104 companies examined, twice as many increased CEO pay as reduced it, with notable exceptions including Apple's Cook and GE's Immelt, both of whom took "substantial pay cuts" (in the case of Cook, a 15% reduction to $8.5M, while Immelt's pay fell 35% to $21.3M). For comparison, among a broader sampling of CEOs in FY15, median pay fell to $10.8M with most chief executives taking a pay cut or receiving raises at or below 1.5%. The increase in compensation is reflected more in stock awards, which have risen by 7.4%, and option awards, which have risen by 3%, while cash bonuses have fallen 1.4%. Companies analyzed generated a median total return of nearly 17% in FY16, up 3% over the previous year. New York University professor Yermack observes that regular shareholder votes on executive compensation have forced boards to "do their homework" on ways to more constructively tie pay to company performance. (link)
With Nike's latest round of earnings due out today, Footwear News asks, "As Adidas Grows, Experts Can’t Agree on Whether Things Are Getting Better or Worse for Nike." Even with the challenge from Three Stripes, Nike's stock price is up 13% this year, though there's concern around future orders, an important metric for financial results down the line. Canaccord Genuity analyst Lyon: "...we believe it will not be until spring ’18 at the earliest when we [will] see a material improvement in its assortment that can compete with Adidas’ strong offering." (link)
London Business School organizational behavior professor Cable, alongside World Bank researcher Steinhage & PwC consultant Wardley: "The Pros and Cons of Competition Among Employees." Thesis: "The way leaders communicate about competition can make employees experience anxiety or excitement about competing. As we have seen, leaders need to invest energy generating excitement by highlighting the potential positive consequences of competition (e.g., recognition and rewards that await outstanding performers) rather than creating anxiety by singling out and highlighting low performers." Multiple studies reviewed with one theme centering on the potential for negative behavior if anxiety & fear are part of the competitive landscape. "One powerful example is for leaders to encourage employees to use their “signature strengths” in a way that benefits others as well as themselves. So, when framing a competition, leaders can remind employees to use more of those skills that they are uniquely good at." As airline carriers nationwide struggle with aging IT infrastructure, the Wall Street Journal examines just how precarious the situation is, noting that mergers often mean airlines are handling ticketing and reservation operations on multiple platforms. CAST Research Labs chief scientist Curtis: "Complexity is the reason airlines have outages. These systems are huge, they're on different platforms, on different languages. It's a body of logic and it all has to work together." Compounding the problem is the impracticality of offline fixes, as most major carriers nearly always have flights in the air, and "building a new reservation system from scratch "does not provide enough benefits to take away investments from another technologies," according to United Continental, which saw flight delays due to tech issues fall 50% in 2016 thanks to continuous upgrades. Major U.S. carriers say they have increased IT spending -- Delta alone characterizes it has invested "hundreds of millions of dollars" -- but a 2015 survey of 100 carriers finds that overall IT expenditures rose from 2.7% the previous year to just 3% of revenue. (link)

The NCAA reports that this year's tournament is the most highly viewed in 24 years, thanks in part to averaging 11.9M viewers across CBS and Turner networks on Sunday, an increase of 34% over last year; additionally, March Madness Live (MML) has generated 69.1M live streams to date, an increase of 24% over last year. On social media, March Madness handles have generated over 20M engagements via Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, a 20% increase over 2016. Sunday's 5PM to 9:25PM window averaged 18.6M viewers, marking a 38% increase and the highest viewership for this telecast window since 1991. Overall Thursday-Sunday TV viewership averaged 9.325M viewers, up 10% over last year. With 5.4M streams, Notre Dame v. Princeton has so far garnered the most through MML. (link)
More Coaching Notes: All signs point to LSU AD Alleva hiring VCU MBB HC Wade for the same gig in Baton Rouge. Six-year $12M deal in the works. Once complete, Wade will owe the Rams $1M, plus a two-game series or another $250K. (link, link); Clemson AD Radakovich makes it official that MBB HC Brownell will be back to lead the Tigers, but the two men have agreed some program changes need to be made. (link); Coppin State AD Carter will hire a new MBB HC as three-year boss Grant exits. (link); Air Force MBB HC Pilipovich getting a two-year contract extension. His previous deal was scheduled to expire after next season. (link); LIU Brooklyn AD Cohen will also hire a new MBB HC. (link); Public athletic departments in Colorado are now exempt from being able to offer only six multi-year coaching contracts at one time. (link); Nevada AD Knuth says he's doing everything he can to keep MBB HC Musselman amid reports of an interview at Cal. (link); Quinnipiac AD Amodio indicates his MBB HC search is progressing as planned, has not interviewed all candidates yet. (link); Indiana State AD Clinkscales parts ways with Softball HC Bouman, "Over the last year, Coach Bouman and I had multiple discussions and came to a mutual understanding concerning the management of the softball program. I have learned that these standards have not been upheld." (link)
As companies pour over $1B into NCAA Tournament advertising, the New York Times observes one thing every commercial, promo and announcement has in common: no collegiate athletes. Sports marketing firm Octagon Chief Strategy Officer Wardle: "With an NFL deal or MLB deal, or any major league, you have inherent in those league rights the opportunity to show players. With the NCAA, you’ve effectively got the rule of none. From a marketing perspective, that then leads you down some more creative paths, if you will." Those more creative paths often include coaches, mascots and/or former players, such as former Duke MBB student-athlete Hill, who orders Pizza Hut from his sneakers at every stoppage in play. Pizza Hut VP of Media and Advertising Daniels: "The beauty of the NCAA is that it’s a feeder for professional sports, and there are iconic athletes that have come out that are household names or just relatable and authentic on camera that help tell your brand story." More. (link)
Conversation concerning the Kentucky Sports Radio (KSR) video of Wichita State MBB HC Marshall's wife continues, as sports attorney McCann points out to Sports Illustrated's Deitsch that the "NCAA can set its terms for a press credential -- which is a contract -- but I'd be surprised if those terms prohibited this video as the NCAA official claimed. This was a public forum, Marshall had no right to privacy and Franklin had a First Amendment right. NCAA should let journalists do their job. If journalists can't, journalists shouldn't bother to report on NCAA games. What's the point of being a journalist if you have to contract away your First Amendment rights?" (link); Meanwhile, KSR founder Jones responds to a Philadelphia Inquirer article in which the NCAA claims none of its officials told Franklin to remove the video from Twitter. Jones: "Head of media relations for the NCAA David Worlock told me over the phone to take (Franklin's) video down. This is totally false." (link); No comment from Wichita State AD Boatright on the situation. (link)
Leaders in San Antonio are concerned about how the potential passage of Senate Bill 6, the so-called "bathroom bill," will impact the Valero Alamo Bowl. The Pac-12's affiliation with the bowl would come into question because public universities in California, like UCLA & Cal, would be prohibited from traveling to Texas if the legislation is passed. California lawmakers signed a bill in January that prohibits state-funded and state-sponsored travel to states with laws that discriminate against lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans-gender people. (link)
Inappropriate communications between male student-athletes about their female counterparts has been well documented this school year. In an effort to educate & inform student-athletes, Michigan State Executive Assoc. AD for Student-Athlete Services Pignataro points to "personal development workshops and a training program that helps student-athletes be aware of relationship violence and provides guidelines for them to manage their behaviors. We also have what we would call 'Train the Trainers.' We have people that train our staff on how to work with student-athletes based on all areas of student affairs." No social media use is restricted for Spartan student-athletes, but mandatory workshops are in place to help communicate the importance of personal brand. (link)
MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
Hoops analyst Antonelli continues the push to move the NCAA WBB Sweet 16 to Las Vegas, "I came up with an idea, used all my ideas working in the game, my marketing background — everything I have, I’ve put into this idea. [...] When you look at the women’s tournament, and we’re losing millions, why are we losing millions and why do we continue to do it that way?" Former UNLV AD Livengood, local sports marketer & former UNLV Senior Assoc. AD Allen, as well as Las Vegas Events Prez Christenson are all on Antonelli's team to make the idea a reality. Livengood: "All of this, all the planning, all the work with the women’s basketball committee, with the oversight committee, the women’s basketball coaches committee, is a little bit of a fruitless effort without being able to have NCAA championships in Nevada. That’s the big elephant in the room." (link)
Oregon releases the findings of a free speech investigation concerning the Daily Emerald student newspaper and the UO athletics department. The issue stems from an incident during the FB season in which Emerald sports editor Jacoby reached out to a UO FB student-athlete for a story without filing a request through the athletics department. Consequently, SID Williford suggested the department may revoke the Emerald's FB press credentials for not adhering to policy. According to the report, requested by Prez Schill and written by General Counsel Reed and law student Czarnecki, it is "undisputed that Williford suggested to the Emerald that their credentials could be at risk if they continued to violate protocols,” and that Jacoby “credibly perceived Williford’s statement as a threat to the Emerald’s valuable access to Duck athletics." The report went on to say that Williford's suggestion was "ill-advised" but that the department did not violate policy because the "threat" was not related to the content of the story. (link)
Connecticut WBB HC Auriemma does not have time for poor body language, noting that if it's bad "you will never get in the game. Ever. I don’t care how good you are. If somebody says, 'You just benched (Breanna Stewart) 35 minutes in the Memphis game a couple years ago.' Yeah I did. 'Oh, that was to motivate her for the South Carolina game the following Monday.' No, it wasn’t. Stewie was acting like a 12-year-old, so I put her on the bench and said, 'Sit there.'" Auriemma goes on to observe that "recruiting enthusiastic kids is harder than it's ever been" because he says they grow up watching professional athletes "and what they see is people being really cool. So they think that's how they're going to act. They haven't even figured out which foot to use as a pivot foot and they're going to act like they're really good players. ... You see it at every AAU tournament, you see it at every high school game, so recruiting kids that are really upbeat, loving life, love the game, and have this tremendous appreciation for when their teammates do something well, that's hard...that's really hard." (link)
In a final round of appeals, three Minnesota FB student-athletes were cleared of sexual harassment allegations and will be allowed to return to the team for spring practice, while two others had their punishments in connection with the alleged sexual assault upheld. S-A Winfield, who was one of the S-As cleared, posted a message on Twitter: "These couple of months have been nothing short of a nightmare for me and I want to thank everyone who has reached out to me and shown nothing but love. Today I have officially been cleared and I am excited to tear up the field for my brothers and my gopher fans." (link); The unidentified woman who sparked Michigan State’s investigation into former MSU doctor Nassar has filed a federal civil lawsuit against Nassar, the university, USA Gymnastics, and Twistars. The lawsuit alleges 33 counts against the defendants, including negligence and gross negligence, a negligent failure to warn or protect, a negligent failure to train or educate Nassar, intention infliction of emotional distress, and fraud and misrepresentation. The suit also makes civil rights claims against MSU and counts of assault and battery and invasion of privacy against Nassar. (link)
As previewed yesterday, it's official, Iowa State Prez Leath is leaving Ames to become the next president at Auburn. Auburn Trustee Harbert, who chaired the 14-member presidential search committee: "This is a great day for Auburn. Dr. Leath is a strategic leader who will work alongside the campus community and alumni to elevate Auburn to the next level in instruction, research and outreach." Leath says he is proud of the progress that's been made in the five years he has led ISU: "As promised, I am turning over the university to the next president better than I inherited it, with records in enrollment, retention rates, graduation rates, job placement numbers, as well as records in research funding, private fundraising and numerous other metrics. I am proud of the many accomplishments that we achieved in economic development and community engagement." (link)
Also Noticed: South Carolina is getting a new center-hung video board, plus new ribbon boards, in Colonial Life Arena thanks to its extended deal with IMG College. (link); Head Coaches are all over Twitter, but why not Instagram? Communications pro Favorito notes only 11 HCs in the NCAA MBB Tournament have Instagram accounts, with Kentucky's Calipari leading the pack with 270K followers (next closest is Virginia Tech's Williams with 5K...quite a gap). Favorito believes it should be an obvious play for HCs given the traction of Insta with prospective student-athletes. (link); Here's a new salary database for Wisconsin employees. Shows AD Alvarez at $1.106M last year. (link); Disney has another beast on its hands, literally, as the new Beauty & the Beast movie had the largest opening ever for a PG-rated film. (link); He may (or may not) be the next MBB HC at Oklahoma State, but either way Doug Gottlieb is definitely leaving CBS/CBS Sports Radio. (link); Tennessee will attempt to set a Guinness Book of World Records mark tomorrow for the largest human letter. Naturally, the 'Power T' will be used as UT brass push for 4K or more in attendance at Neyland Stadium. (link); What four schools saw both their MBB & WBB programs advance to the Sweet 16? (link)
