From the Principal
PRIDE. RESPECT. RESPONSIBILITY. These terms represent the three pillars of student behavioral expectations at Tech High School. Every classroom, hallway, and common area of the school displays our three expectations and the meaning behind each. We’ve defined what PRIDE, RESPECT, and RESPONSIBILITY are in the cafeteria, classrooms, hallways, LRC, restrooms, and during extra-curricular events. And when we say defined, we mean what students are expected to do, not what they can’t do.

To reinforce our message of positive behaviors, a couple times a month during our Tuesday morning Homeroom time, teachers walk students through mini-lessons that often address PRIDE, RESPECT, or RESPONSIBILITY. One such lesson took place this past Tuesday, March 21. The neat part about Tuesday’s lesson is that it used a student-generated video to capture our three expectations. What better way to convey what is expected of ALL students than by using students themselves to get the message across to others? The students involved had fun creating the video, and best of all, data show these simple lessons and messages work with our students. As of March 21, 96% of Tech students had either 0 or just 1 office discipline referral and over 1400 students have zero office discipline referrals. That’s outstanding! This means our students understand daily what is expected of them. Collectively, our students understand how to get along with each other, especially among our diverse student body.

As a Tech High School community, we should all take PRIDE in the exceptional behaviors our students display every day that help instill that tradition of excellence since 1917.

New High School Update
Last month, one of the items the New HS Design Committee focused on was how the Media Center and the Learning Neighborhoods (classrooms) can function a bit closer together, particularly around technology. To assist with this process, Tech HS hosted a Technology Visioning Workshop on Feb. 28 in our current Learning Resource Center. School staff, parents, students, and a few community members had the opportunity to discuss what our vision for technology use in our new school could be. The biggest takeaway was to make sure we have a solid infrastructure in place to accommodate the ever-changing technologies that we will experience over the coming decades, and at the same time staying within our parameters. The workshop affirmed the work of the original taskforce in 2015 and the idea of a technology rich system.

We are moving closer to finishing up the schematic design phase of this project and will enter the design development phase. Beginning near the end of the April, we will gather program area subgroups together over the course of three days to discuss more specific layouts of spaces inside the building. The subgroups include CTE and Culinary Arts, Special Education spaces, Administration areas, Fine Arts, and so on.  These subgroups are similar to what was completed during the summer of 2015, and we plan to partner with Apollo’s staff once again.

Also, based on community input, some recommendations were made to the activity and physical education spaces to allow for potential future expansion. Basically, it means a redesign to the phy ed and activity wing allowing for future expansion by placing the fitness center and all purpose room above the locker room facilities.
Activities News
The winter season at Tech has finished and spring is just starting. I find that hard to believe! This year has gone so fast!

Here is a short summary of how winter teams did that were still playing at the last newsletter and a schedule of activities:
Boys Hockey - They finished the year 15-8-2 overall and 10-2-2 in the CLC, which put them in second place. They lost in the quarter-final round to St. Michael-Albertville, 4-3. It was a very close game and the boys played well. They have a good nucleus coming back next year and they are already wanting to get back on the ice.

Girls Basketball - The team finished the season 10-17 overall and 6-10 in the CLC. They played the #2 ranked team in the state, Elk River, in the sections and lost a tough game.

Boys Basketball - They finished the season 14-2 in the CLC and 22-6 overall. They were the CLC champions. They lost to a tough Rogers team in the section semi-finals.

Wrestling - They had a very good end of the season. They were the Section 8AAA runners-up and had 3 wrestlers qualify for the state tournament. Austin Brenner finished in third place, Micah Mangel went 2-2 and Tyler Hugg finished in second place. They are losing some really good seniors, but have some underclassmen who will be ready to fill their shoes.

Boys Swimming and Diving -  Senior Bingham Shaw qualified for the state tournament in the 50 and 100 yd. freestyle. He made the finals in both races and finished in 13th and 15th place, respectively.

Gymnastics – Once again, the gymnastics team had a fantastic season. They were co-champions in the CLC, won the Section 8AA title and after a great state meet, they finished in second place. They battled at the state tournament and it was really exciting for the spectators and team.
Adapted Floor Hockey - They qualified for the state tournament with an 11-3 win over Winona. At the state meet they finished as runners up. They played a very good game against North Suburban, but came up a little short. They had a fantastic year!!

Speech - They will be hosting 2 big meets in the next couple of weeks. They have their invitational on March 25 and on April 6 they host sections. There is no charge for these events, so come and watch the talented students we have on this team.

Tech Students Have a Great Day of Learning at the University of Minnesota Campus
At Tech High School 15 students have been participating in leadership seminars lead by EMO Enterprises and Dr. Abdul Omari a professor at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. On March 22 students from North and South Junior High as well as Apollo and Tech had the opportunity to attend the sixth and final session titled: Recognizing and Responding to Bias. Students learned about the power of biases and then had the opportunity hear from representatives from NorthStar STEM Alliance and the Diversity Program Coordinator.

Students finished the day with a campus tour and a University of Minnesota swag bag. Assistant Principal Fischer, coordinator of the program stated, “The six sessions with Dr. Omari have been powerful in helping students understand their potential in leadership.”

Junior student, Hamze Ibrihim stated, “Omari has helped me understand why it is important to view and listen to other perspectives.”

"Dr. Abdul Omari's leadership seminars helped me discover and flesh out my inner leader. Being apart of the group helped me step out of my comfort zone and engage in the important lessons that will come in hand for me in any future situations," expressed junior student, Yusra Mohamed.
